Registration begins at 8:00 am and the camp runs from 8:30am to 3:30pm. Camp Dragonfly, a program of the Program for Grieving Children & Teens, is a oneday retreat designed to bring together grieving children and teens with key supportive people in their lives. “It showed me that I was not alone,” states Brianna, a Camp Dragonfly participant, “and that other people were grieving too”. Specially trained counselors and volunteers provide a supportive environment to help meet the unique needs of grieving children, teens and adults. The camp activities offer opportunities for both therapeutic experiences and education about the grief process. The camp is also prepared to support children who have not experienced a loss but are living with a family member with a terminal illness. The goal of the one day camp is to offer support to all who have experienced a loss, to help educate those attending about the grieving process, and to help families feel comfortable having those difficult conversations with their children and other family members about death and loss. The camp is open to hospice patients of Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice, as well as, families in the community who have experienced the loss of a loved one, or are expecting a loss. The camp is offered free to anyone who wishes to attend. The Food Bank plans to construct a modern, 115,000 cubic foot produce storage facility, with multiple zones for varying temperatures and humidity levels. “We’re a food bank, but we want to focus on becoming the nutrition bank for the state of Maine,” said Kristen Miale, president of Good Shepherd Food Bank. “By working to acquire and distribute more nutritious, perishable food, we can help contribute to a healthier future for the state.” The project will also include upgrades to the Food Bank’s current refrigeration systems and roof. The upgraded facility will allow the Food Bank to store fresh produce in optimal conditions for year-round distribution. The Food Bank receives approximately 3 million pounds of fresh produce a year from retail donors. The organization also works closely with Maine farmers to acquire local produce. In 2014, Good Shepherd Food Bank worked with 30 Maine farms and purchased just over 1 million pounds of locally grown vegetables and fruits for distribution to its statewide network of partner agencies. The farms donated an additional 1 million pounds, meaning the Food Bank was able to distribute more than 2 million pounds of Maine-grown products to food pantries and meal sites across the state. “The sophistication of the Good Shepherd distribution center, and the work being done there, cannot be fully appreciated without seeing it firsthand,” said the Next Generation Foundation Trustees. “We are thrilled to support upgrades that will make the facility even better. Incorporating donated food and volunteer labor to help carry out its mission to feed the hungry, Good Shepherd is a fine example of Maine’s tradition of neighbors taking care of neighbors.” In addition to the funding from Next Generation Foundation, the Food Bank was awarded a $50,000 grant from the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry and is working to secure an additional $200,000 in labor and additional donations. Total project cost is estimated to be $1,250,000. The facility upgrades will result in cost savings for the Food Bank in the form of lowered heating and electricity expenses. The organization expects to save approximately $38,000 annually. The Food Bank plans to complete its cold storage facility upgrades by the end of 2015. Contact Paul Gagne at [email protected] or 225-2076 January 30, 2015 The Country The New Outdoor Partners Program The endless outdoor recreational opportunities that can be found all across Maine would not be possible without the state’s many landowners who allow public access on their land. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife’s Outdoor Partners Program recognizes the importance of that access and works to preserve and enhance it while improving relations with landowners and providing an opportunity for land users to show their support and gratitude. “The recreational use of private property is extremely important for our outdoor enthusiasts, and respecting landowners is essential to that use,” said Governor Paul R. LePage. The new Outdoor Partners Program is an updated version of the Department’s Supersport program, which began in 1996 and had at least 1,000 participants every year. Joining the Outdoor Partners Program is simple and can be done when you purchase any license or through the Department’s online store at www.mefishwildlife.com for just $15. People who join the program agree to abide by a code of ethics that includes respecting the law, public land, landowners, other outdoor users, fish, wildlife and the environment. Those who join this program also agree to assist a landowner in the upcoming year. In return, Outdoor Partners receive valuable benefits, including periodic electronic newsletters with timely information from Maine’s biologists, wardens, guides, snowmobilers, landowners and others, free passes to the Maine Wildlife Park, Swan Island and the North Maine Woods and discounts to a variety of places such as Kittery Trading Post, DeLorme, Cabelas and more. Also, Outdoor Partners are automatically entered for a chance to win 1 of 6 gift cards valued at $500 each from either Cabelas, Kittery Trading Post or LLBean. A chance drawing will be held December 31, 2015. “When you join the Outdoor Partners Program, your money helps fund enhanced law enforcement details in problem areas, equipment to investigate and prosecute landowner abuse and criminal trespass complaints and promotional and educational programs designed to improve and maintain access,” said IFW Commissioner Chandler Woodcock. “Funding also goes towards IFW’s landowner sign program, which aids landowners in managing access to private land by offering an alternative to ‘No Trespassing’ signs.” For more information on the Outdoors Partners Program, go to www.mefishwildlife.com. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service invites students in grades K-12 to create designs featuring ducks, geese, or swans in their natural habitats. Designs are judged in four age categories, with awards for first, second, and third places and honorable mentions. Entries must be received by March 15th, 2015. This year the judging will take place at the University of Maine in Orono, on March 27th from 9:00AM until noon. The Maine Best of Show entry will compete with contest winners from other states in a national competition in Washington D.C. The first place national winning design is used to create the Federal Junior Duck Stamp. Proceeds from the sale of Junior Duck Stamps (which cost $5 each) support conservation education by providing awards and scholarships for students, teachers, and schools. Modeled after the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s annual Courier www.centralmainetoday.com Federal Duck Stamp competition, the Junior Duck Stamp contest is part of an educational curriculum that teaches students about waterfowl, the importance of wetlands, and habitat conservation. Proceeds from the sale of Federal Duck Stamps protect wetlands through land acquisition by the National Wildlife Refuge System.
