About Vermont Quilt Festival The Vermont Quilt Festival, New England’s largest and oldest quilt event, was founded in 1977 as a one-day show of old and new quilts as a part of Northfield’s annual Labor Day weekend celebration. Over the last 38 years, it has added classes, quilt appraisals and the Merchants Mall, and now takes place at the Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction. From its inception, the Festival has displayed quilts from private owners and loans from the collections of historical societies and the 3 renowned Shelburne Museum. The Festival also initiated the Vermont Quiltsearch, which documents antique Vermont quilts and their makers and resulted in the book, Plain and Fancy: Vermont’s People and Their Quilts, by Donna Bister and Richard L. Cleveland. The Festival’s goals are to bring the best quilts and quiltmakers in the world to New England for a celebration of the art of quiltmaking, to foster the appreciation of the art, and to document antique quilts to preserve a record of this region’s artistic and cultural heritage. Several times designated an American Bus Association Top 100 Event and a Vermont Chamber of Commerce Top Ten Summer Event, the Festival has also received coverage in national and international media. Photographing Quilts at Vermont Quilt Festival Quilt photos taken at the Festival are for your personal enjoyment only. Photos may never be used for commercial purposes. Any photos posted to your personal website must include appropriate credit for each quilt artist, including where and when the photos were taken. Photos of special exhibits are allowed unless signs at the individual exhibits indicate otherwise. Please be responsible in your use of quilt photographs and help us protect the rights of the quiltmakers and others. Please consult vendors before photographing their booths. 4 Contest, Antique, and Special Exhibits Quilt shows are all about the quilts, and over the last 38 years the Festival has presented thousands of the best new and old quilts from the United States and around the world. The seven separate exhibits provide viewers with a grand cross-section of the quiltmaker’s art, past and present. Quilt Contest MILLER SOUTH The VQF Contest is an annual challenge to quilters from around the world to produce their best work. The exhibit inspires, astonishes and delights with its breadth and depth of color, design and creativity. Our theme for this year is Inspired by a Song. Be sure to check out our young quilters exhibit; you will be amazed with their talent. Contest quilts come from all over the US, Canada, and abroad. The contest deadline is February 2-7, 2015. For a contest entry form, visit www.vqf.org or email [email protected]. Piecing Our Past: Quilt Styles of the 19th Century Debra Grana and Sharon Waddell, Curators Miller North During the 1800s, there seemed to be an endless variety of quilt styles. Some designs appear over long periods of time; others soon fade away. Using quilts from their own collections and a selection of others, Debra Grana and Sharon Waddell, quilt historians and collectors from New York State, will provide a dazzling timeline of quilts. Life’s Work: The Quilts of Joe Cunningham Joe Cunningham, Curator Miller North This exhibit spans the development of San Francisco quiltmaker Joe Cunningham. His first works, created in 1979, used traditional materials and aesthetics to make original statements. Now his works have become more personal and ahistorical. No matter how foreign his quilts may look, his goal is for them to remain human-size, useful objects. They are blankets, objects within which one can wrap up against the coldness of the universe. delight the viewer. Made between 2011 and 2014, these quilts have never been shown at the Vermont Quilt Festival. The quilts of New England Stitches are indicative of the current direction that quilting is taking here in the region. The curators have combed the six states for the very best of New England’s stitches and the stories behind the work. Lobby Lights: Quilts by Joan Ford Joan Ford, Curator Miller Centre Lobby Originally Joan believed that scrap quilts were too disorganized and that she was too Type A to be able to create one. Now, using a controlled scrappy approach, all her quilts contain lots of different fabrics. She selects more than enough scraps to complete the project following a theme, then lets the scraps fall where they may as the blocks come together. Visitors should look up and enjoy the effect of a multitude of fabrics blending together to make each quilt. Instructors’ Showcase Miller South Over more than three decades, many of VQF’s instructors have been at the leading edge of developments in the quilt world. This year’s roster is no different, and visitors have the opportunity to see in person, examples of quilts that otherwise might only be available to them in print. As always, this exhibit reflects the diversity of the quiltmaking tradition. 2015 SewBatik Challenge: Whimsy Miller North Whimsy is defined as a sense of playfulness, a dreamlike or fanciful idea. This year’s challenge invited participants to embrace that definition and create something out of this world in a square wall quilt format. SewBatik provided two fat eighths of New England Stitches batik fabric. The quilts will be judged by SewBatik Pamela Druhen and Eliza Greenhoe-Bergh, Curators and the first place winner will be awarded a basket Miller North full of SewBatik products valued at $500. The second place winner will receive a basket of SewBatik Many fine quilters in New England rarely, if ever, fabrics valued at $300. All fabric packets for the show their work publicly. From gifts, which com2015 challenge have been sold. memorate significant life events, to projects which experiment with new techniques and ideas, this group of very personal work will surprise and 5 2016 SewBatik Challenge: Celebration The 2016 Challenge offers entrants the opportunity to create a small wall quilt showing what celebration means to them. Whether it is a feeling, special occasion, holiday or life event that makes someone smile, use the SewBatik fabric to embrace the idea in the quilt. Limited quantities of fabric packets for the 2016 Challenge will be available for purchase each day at the SewBatik table in Miller North. Due to the increased interest in participating in the Challenge, there will be a rule change. See the complete entry requirements at vqf.org. Gallery Talks Miller North The curators of each of the special exhibits in Miller North offer free gallery talks about their exhibits. Each curator speaks daily on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. These informal talks offer visitors an in-depth look at the featured exhibits, and allow viewers to ask questions to further their appreciation of the displays. A complete schedule is available at the show.
