Spotlight on 105NE

DISTRICT GOVERNOR’S Newsletter – February 2015
Spotlight on 105NE
The Information Day. Great News! Lion members are invited to an Information Day on the 22 March 2015
at the Holiday Inn, Scotch Corner. This is great opportunity to meet someone new, share your ideas and
experiences, learn something and have a few laughs, working very closely with members of District C.
There will be five workshops where members can share ideas with a smaller group and the programme for
the day has been sent out to all clubs. It promises to be engaging, interesting and exciting with new ideas
to take back to your clubs. I look forward to seeing you all on the day. Lets build on the fun, fellowship and
excitement of Convention!
The Centennial Service Challenge is a great opportunity as a District to celebrate 100 years of service
worldwide by Lions Clubs International. The idea is to come up with a one off service project in your local
community that celebrates what Lions have been doing for 100 years. It can be a Club or a Zone project. It
can also be an opportunity for you improve the quality of life for people in your community and at the same
time, draw attention to the great work that Lions do. Think about ways to share your project – on Facebook,
on your websites and in the local press. Discuss this at your Clubs and in Zones - there is no copyright on
good ideas! Let’s all get behind the Centennial Service Challenge and go for it NE!
We want to continue the high profile created during the festive period into the New Year! Just Ask is a
campaign by Lions to increase membership. We have taken up the We Care about Every Penny
Campaign across the District and it is beginning to show great results. It is designed as a conversation
starter when meeting members of the public or potential supporters. Check it out!
Go for it!
Just Ask1!
Strengthen the Pride!
The Power of Social Media. I know some members are not enthusiastic about this but we now have further
proof that it works – as you will have seen during the festive period the hits on club Facebook pages have
been extraordinary. Nothing is so successful as success itself! Keep up the good work and keep the
message out there. The more proactive we are as clubs, promoting ourselves on social media, the more
positive feedback we will get and it will increase our membership in the long term. This is why it is important
to use Facebook and create websites and keep them up to date. This is the easiest way to get to a wider
audience. Have a look at other club Facebook pages, at the District website and other club websites and
“Like” and “Share” them - this is how these systems work!
A big thank you to all the members for all their hard work and service across the District.
Keep up the good work! Just Ask1!

GLT, Global Leadership Team
It’s almost here !
Now that the summits are almost complete your
district team has responded to feedback by our
intention to hold “An Information Day”. Don’t be
confused by the name, we considered several
and this was the best fit.
“Info day” is not about us handing you endless
amounts of information that you really don’t want
to read and it’s certainly not intended to be a
series of lectures on things you really don’t want
to hear!
So what exactly is ‘Info Day’ ?
We are intending to hold six interactive
workshops based on what you the members have
asked for, our motto for this event is “Share
something, meet someone, learn something and
have fun” and there will be something to suit
every member irrespective of experience.
If our district is to move forward we have to
address our problems in a practical and realistic
way and we believe that the vast experience that
we have accrued over the years within the clubs
can achieve this, that’s why “sharing” is so
Advanced Lions Leadership Institute
As the District’s representative I was very pleased
to attend the Advanced Lions Leadership Institute
for three days at the end of October which this
time was held in Birmingham immediately before
the Europa Forum and was attended by 75 Lions
from countries across the whole of Europe. The
Institute was held luckily for me in English and
French.
The Institute was conducted by the Manager of
the Institutes and Seminars from Oak Brook
together with five past European International
Directors.
The subjects covered included Promoting
Lionism, Lions Club International (LCI)
programmes and resources, Presentation
Preparation and Conflict Resolution. All very
useful for Lions Leaders.
Our Institute which was residential was held in the
Hotel Hilton at the NEC. It was very interesting,
useful and enjoyable to be mixing with Lions from
so many different countries all working to the
same ends with the same objectives. One
evening at Dinner I looked around my round table
to find I was dinning with Lions from Holland,
Finland, Denmark, France, Germany and
England. A tremendous experience.
I would ask all Lions who have reached Zone
Chairman level to consider applying to attend in
the future. The costs for the Institute including
hotel costs are very kindly met by Oak Brook and
travel by our District budget.
Youth Centre 2016.
I expect Dumfries will be asking for your support
soon so watch out for their appeal.
If any Lion is interested in attending I would be
only too pleased to discuss the Institute with them
before they actual apply. Applications require the
DG, the 1st VDG and GLT Coordinators support.
Young Ambassador.
From 20 to 22 February Alan and I, along with
representatives from Teesdale Lions Club will be
in Dudley, West Midlands with our Young
Ambassador Lauren. It was an all girl final. Wish
her luck and, if you want to meet her before
Convention in November as she is speaking at
our Lions United Nations event at the Scottish
Parliament on Tuesday March.

Happy Youth Year
From PDG Corinne and the Youth Team
This year we are saving you money making your
task easier and helping your club give more
service to youth.
Young Leaders in Service.
A few weeks ago a small meeting was held in
Birmingham to make major adjustments to the
Lions Young Leaders in Service Programme. I
have had approval from Oak Brook and from 1
February MD105 will go it their own way.
How?
 Your club will select the group it wants to
use and give them log books
 When the books are complete the group
will give them back to your club
 You will check them, list the names on a
spread-sheet and send it by email to Lions
Andrew, John or me.
 We will send the list to Multiple District
Officer Lion Sally who will prepare the
certificates and courier them to you.
 No postage to America and anywhere
else, just speedy service.
This year’s Peace Poster Competiton theme
Peace, Love and Understanding was the
subject of lively interest by the pupils of Corbridge
Middle School in Northumberland sponsored by
Tynedale Lions.
The school's art teacher, Gaynor Walker-Thomas
was on hand to judge the entries. The winner was
Harry Weatherfield, aged 12, whose poster
features the late Martin Luther King and the Tree
of Knowledge. Harry's caption to accompany his
poster reads "A dream of peace can become
reality with a little love and understanding",
noting that it is 50 years since Martin Luther King
was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Lion President Ian Cave presented Harry with an
award at a recent School assembly together with
the two runners up. Lion Ian, whose mission this
year is to encourage more engagement by
Tynedale Lions in the local community challenged
the schoolchildren to answer the question Does
anyone know who the Lions are? He was met by
the reply from one young pupil they are the
animals that roam around in Africa!
Let’s hope that initiatives like the Peace Poster
Competition will continue to raise the awareness
of Lions by the next
generation.
Hosting is a great experience. Why not try it.
This year’s Youth Centre is being held in District

Youth Exchange Family Hosting
What will it cost me?
Youth Exchange hosting
involves inviting a young
person, 18 to 22years to
live with your family for a
short period, usually ten
days, before attending a
Youth Centre.
You are asked to
provide a bed and meals
as you would for your family. Just treat the
students as members of your family for the
duration of their stay.
Each participant in Youth Exchange pays an
amount to cover internal travel to the host family
and to the Centre. If you incur any costs such as
picking your guest up from a rail station or taking
the student to the Centre this can be reimbursed
by your MD Youth Exchange Officer.
I find it easier to host at least two students or
have another student living nearby so that they
are company for each other and can go on visits
together. It is not necessary for you to travel
everywhere with your guest. They are young
adults and do not need their hands held. They will
pay their own costs for such visits. They all speak
English
Your own family doesn't have to be still at home,
we are both in our seventies and have been
hosting for many years and still enjoy it.
Morpeth Lions donations round off 2014
Morpeth Lions’ Christmas meeting was the
occasion for deciding which charities to support
for the last quarter of 2014. The Club’s Social
Service Committee had made recommendations
on 12 requests for assistance and seven of these
were agreed with the remaining five being
deferred for further information.
The seven agreed were the Samaritans - The
Mayor’s Charity; Dawn Advice; Leukaemia and
Lymphoma Research; North Northumberland
Park Mountain Rescue; Heel and Toe - cerebral
palsy; the Outward Bound Trust, our DG partner’s
project and DROUT, a local charity that helps
people with alcohol problems. A sum of £1,800
was shared between the seven charities.
In the event there was a last minute thirteenth
request from the Toby Henderson Trust. It was
not a question of unlucky thirteen as a further
£250 was pledged to the Trust.
Lion President Stuart Lewis said “Much
consideration has been given to these donations
and wherever possible we Lions like to support
charitable work which benefits the local
communities.

Unique helmet for baby Euan
Ayr & Prestwick Lions Club was
delighted to present a cheque
for £500 to mum Lynne Hall
from Coylton near Ayr. Lynne
needed to raise £2,000 to
purchase a specially designed
helmet for her baby, Euan, who
had been born prematurely. In
Euan’s case the consequence
was a head shape deformity
known as Plagiocephaly or Flat
Head Syndrome.
The lightweight helmet is made
to fit the baby’s head using scanning and
photographic techniques. It is adjusted at frequent
intervals and allows the head to grow over time to
a more normal shape. The helmet is then
discarded. Unfortunately this service is not
available on the NHS.As can be seen from the
photograph, Euan is developing into a healthy
and contented boy.
This is the second occasion on which Ayr &
Prestwick Lions Club has been able to assist a
baby born with this condition.
After Boxing Day dips in Aberdeen, Sunderalnd
and Whitby dozens of people took part in a chilly
annual tradition at a North Yorkshire seaside town
to see in the New Year.
The Scarborough New Year’s Day Dip is an
annual event which has been running for 23
years, organised by Scarborough Lions Club.
The dip encourages locals and visitors to arrive at
the beach in fancy dress, then run into – and
quickly out of – the North Sea, with everyone
taking part raising money for the Scarborough
Lions and charities of their choice.
Lion President Alan Deacon said: “It went very
well, we had a massive crowd down here, must
have had 2 to 3,000 people and close to 100
dippers, which is increasing each year. Taking the
dippers’ sponsor money along with bucket
collections, we’ve probably taken £5,000 or
more.”
Among those taking part in the event were
members of the Scarborough and Ryedale
Mountain Rescue team, which is celebrating its
50th anniversary, staff from the La Baia but not
Alan himself.
He said: “I’m far too busy organising it to take part
in it – that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.”
Winning costumes included Conchita Wurst, Miss
Piggy, and the National Elf Service
Durham Lions have a busy month at the
heart of local communities
On 23 January Durham Lions Club President
Alvan Bailey together with Lions Keith Vear, Peter
Oakley and Peter Crookes joined a group of
about 40 regulars at The Daleside Arms in
Coxdale for a gentleman's evening, no stripper
but there was an adult comedian who entertained
us after an excellent beef dinner provided by
Michael and Sandra Patterson. Durham Lions
presented a cheque for £500.00 to Robert
Colgrove, a fundraiser from the Great North Air
Ambulance service. This money had been
raised by Durham Lions Sponsored Golf
Tournament in 2014.
The evening had been organised by Paul
Thompson and was dedicated to the memory of
another regular, Sam Stoker, who sadly passed
away recently. As a result of the regulars efforts
Paul was able to present a further cheque for
£400 to Robert.
The photo shows, from left to right, Lion Keith
Vear, Lion President Alvan Bailey handing the
Lions cheque for £500 to Robert, then Lions Peter
Oakley and Peter Crookes.
Durham Lions again decided to support
Endeavour Woodcrafts, which is a co-operative
company based in Ferryhill Co Durham. It has
been in existence for some 13 years, providing
practical work training for people with a variety of
issues. It is a relatively small organisation that
offers very personal level of support to the people
who go there. We joined them on 19th December
for their Christmas party, complete with their
buffet and disco.
The picture shows Lion President Alvan Bailey
making the presentation of the cheque for £400 to
Luoise Killip, their manager, with Lions Peter
Oakley and Margaret Gibson. The Deputy Mayor
of the Ferryhill Town Council, Ken Cambell is on

We later received a
very nice letter
from Louise
thanking us for the donation, which they will be
using to buy a new piece of machinery.
A coffee morning and cake sale was hosted by
Joanna Angus of the Prince of Wales pub located
in Hetton le Hole. The event was held at the
Hetton Methodist Church just before Christmas
and was attended by many local people who
often go to the regular coffee mornings held
there, making it a very sociable occasion. The
sale of coffee and biscuits together with the cake
sales and the raffle raised around £230 for
Durham Lions Charity Funds. This was an
interesting project, with the local community
holding their own event to raise money to help us
to help the community.

atmosphere. Lion President Alvan thanked the
people at the event for their support and
friendliness.
Lions raise a glass to Robbie
This year Malton & Norton Lions celebrated the
256th birthday of Robbie Burns in style at the
Cedar Barn, Pickering with the traditional fayre of
haggis, tatties and neeps washed down with
copious amounts of whisky. The haggis was
piped in by Piper Mr Mark Jamieson to the strains
of the lament ‘A Man’s a Man for aw that’
Catherine and James Lindenberg with Piper Mark
Jamieson. James and Catherine Lindenberg were
another website/social media success. They saw
Malton & Norton Lions website, emailed to see if
there were any tickets left for the Burns Supper
and had a great evening. They were unknown to
any of us, but live in the next village to Lions
President Nick and Lion Webmaster Richard –
Wintringham.
Lion President Nick Simpson said that this annual
event gets our fund raising year off to a fine start,
the women looked resplendent in their tartan plaid
and there were plenty of kilts in evidence from a
number of different clans.
Lion President Nick delivered the toast to the
Lasses and new Lion Gwennie Lownesbrough
responded with a toast to the Laddies with some
interesting facts about the shortcomings of
Yorkshiremen, all delivered in the time honoured
mischievous style.
Lion Bill Thompson addressed the Haggis most
proficiently without recourse to notes Fair fa’ your

and Past International Director Lion Howard Lee
entertained guests to A mans a man for a’ that, all

Past Council Chair Lion Phil Robinson. Truly
International and well done all.

Santa had finished his first two nights out visiting
the people of Malton, Norton and the surrounding
villages. On Sunday he was in the Market Place
to help switch on the Malton lights and then went
off to visit all the children in Scagglethorpe ...oh
yes and also some very special people in New
Jersey in the USA!
At one end of the village grandma and grandad
were in the middle of a Skype call to daughter
and grandchildren in New Jersey in the USA
when they heard Santa and the elves. Un-phased
they unplugged the laptop and took it out into the
dark night so Santa could talk to the laptop and
the family in America. Daughter seemed unable
to hold back the tears of delight!
This again proves Lion’s International service and
the importance of social media in spreading the
word.

Bound”
Outward Bound is an international, non-profit
outdoor education organisation, working with
schools, many of them in 105NE District, and with
more than 200,000 young people each year.
Their programmes aim to foster the personal
growth and social skills of young adults as was
seen by Convention delegates who heard Andrew
Hanlon speak and truly inspire us.
The programmes bring out the best in people,
irrespective of their backgrounds, from school
children through to
senior managers.
They are taught so
that participants can
achieve whatever
they set out to do.
You should be there at 5.30pm for security
checks and if anyone would like to have a tour of
the building before the event, you should get in
touch with DG Lion Andrew to arrange this.
Anyone with access issues should also get in
touch with Lion Andrew.
Please let DG Lion Andrew have a list of names
of those planning to attend, by 8 March 2015 at
the latest. The names of all attendees and club
are needed. [email protected]
