Since our last newsletter I visited a number of clubs, and Zone meetings.
FOOD APPEAL
The top question was “How did the Tesco food Appeal go”
Well just for the record it’s “The Lions Club Food appeal at Tesco”
Thanks to P.D.G. Joe, our figures were well up on last year
And most clubs were a lot happier this year the way the Appeal was responded to.
A small number of Clubs said the Local Store manager did not know about the Lions Food
appeal.
For next year we will try and ensure that Tesco Management inform all stores about the
date and times of our collection.
All clubs by now should have received their Vouchers which were available for collection
at the local store.
Some Clubs have asked for Publicity material to be made available for next year.
Our PR guru Lion Frank Corr was most helpful in getting nationwide print media attention
for the campaign this year.
At the last Cabinet meeting Lion Terence Mangan of Ennis Lions club showed a sample of
a supermarket Trolley wrap in PVC.
A sample of this and also a Lion collection box will be available for viewing at the
Convention.
Young Ambassador District Final.
After the Cabinet meeting on Saturday 17th January a number of us drove to Liffey Valley
Hotel to catch the final
of the Young Ambassador Award.
Congrats to Carlow Lions club in supplying the Winner M/s Orla Jackman.
Cork, Ennis, & Newry Lions Clubs were the runners up.
I want to thanks all the clubs that put in an entrant for this great Youth competition.
Only 4 Regions were represented out of 8, and I think this a poor reflection on our District.
This is should be an ideal way of connecting with the Youth in our
Communities.
So please ALL CLUBS get involved in the
Youth Ambassador Award next year.
Thanks to Lion Cian Cotter and his team of Judges
for giving us again a great District competition.

Future Planning
After a discussion in Cabinet about Multiple District dues and Travel.
I asked Lion Gerry Langford to put a committee together to investigate the Pro & Cons of
a single Lion District in Ireland.
This was subsequently done, and we will hear more at Convention.

We had 6 clubs cancelled recently, due to late payment and when this happens a Club ReActivation form must be completed and all the Officers and Club members with details,
Names and Addresses must be returned by the Club Officer and emailed to Oakbrook.
So please; Club Treasurers pay dues on time, if you don’t it involves a great deal of extra
work for your Club.

We are delighted to be hosting the Annual Convention for 2015 in Waterford. It happens to coincide with
our Clubs 50th Anniversary. This gives us a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our birthday and showcase
the City. Our plans are well progressed and we are confident you will have a wonderful time in Ireland’s
oldest City.
The Convention, will take place in the Tower Hotel on the Mall in Waterford City on the 6th & 7th of March 2015. The
hotel is just a short stroll from shops and other local attractions including the now globally established Viking Triangle.

We have two very high profile individuals as guest speakers planned for this weekend
Peter Fitzgerald is an Irish deputy police commissioner of the Irish Garda Inspectorate and author of the
United Nations initial report known as the Fitzgerald Report "Report of the Fact-Finding Mission to
Lebanon inquiring into the causes, circumstances and consequences of the assassination of former Prime
Minister Rafik Hariri, 25 February - 24 March 2005".
Ordered by the United Nations Secretary General of the United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, it
reported on the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri on 14 February 2005.
In the wake of Hariri's assassination on 14 February 2005, Annan dispatched a fact-finding mission to
investigate the killing. Arriving in Beirut on 25 February, the mission interviewed Lebanese officials and
politicians, from both the government and opposition, studied the Lebanese investigation and legal
proceedings, examined the crime scene and collected evidence. It also interviewed witnesses.
Eamonn McEneaney is the Museum Director at Waterford City and County Council. He will talk to us
about Waterford Treasures which are three Museums within the Viking Triangle and the impact they have
on the cultural, tourism and business aspects of the City and County.
We are looking forward to both Peter and Eamonn sharing their experiences with us this weekend
Registration forms have been sent out and these include all the relevant information including the variety of lunch and
dinner menus available on the Friday and Saturday of the Convention.
The President Patsy Sheridan and the very hardworking Committee have worked tirelessly to make this a very
enjoyable and rewarding experience at the Annual Convention in Waterford.

OUR INTERNATIONAL GUEST P.I.P JIM ERVIN
Jim Ervin, of Albany, Georgia, USA, served as president of The International Association of Lions Clubs following
his election at the association's 82nd International Convention, held in San Diego, California, USA, June 28-July 2,
1999.
A member of the Albany Lions Club since 1977, Past President Ervin has held many positions within the association,
including club president, zone chairman, district governor and council chairman. He was an international director
during
1992-94. Past President Ervin served as chairman of the Lions Clubs International Foundation during 2000-01 and
presently serves on the SightFirst Advisory Committee. He is also a past director and trustee of the Georgia Lions
Lighthouse Foundation and the Georgia Lions Camp for the Blind.
Past President Ervin has received numerous awards in recognition of his service to the association, including an
Extension Award, a Guiding Lion Award, two International President's Certificates of Appreciation, nine International
President's Awards and the Ambassador of Good Will Award, the highest honour the association bestows upon its
members. He is also a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow.
In addition to his Lion activities, Past President Ervin is a member of several business, professional and fraternal
organizations.
Past President Ervin lives with his wife Sharon Dillard and has four children and five grandchildren.

Suicide Awareness/Prevention & Bullying/Cyber Bullying Project.
This is an appeal to all Lions Clubs to get involved with this project. Please either contact myself or
your Zone chair.
(Leaflets only relevant in the South, working on a leaflet for the North)
Reports keep coming, of the devastation and destruction caused by Bullying, leading
to suicide. In addition to the death, the tragedy is family and close friends lives are
shattered as a result.
Phenomenal support from School Principles for Lions Club leaflets on Bullying/Cyber
Bullying. The strength of this positive responsive has surpassed our best expectations
confirming we are on the right track, support for schools and parents are the key.
Only Lions Clubs can deliver this support, on a Country wide basis. 42,000 Leaflets in
#circulation. 28 Lions Clubs involved so far. (see below some feedback from members, who are working
with school managers)
If you can prevent one case of serious bullying, it is all well worthwhile. Believe and go after this with
passion.
This is a wonderful opportunity, to engage with School Principals and Teachers.
Please appoint a member of your Lions Club to follow up with schools in your area. There is a very pleasant
surprise waiting. (Suggestions below for getting your LC involved)

Tipperary LC sponsored a seminar on Cyber Bullying, at the request of School Principle Ms. Colette
Treacy. She felt schools and parents needed more advice to deal with this serious issue.
Pat travelled to a meeting of Zone 6A, in Thurles on 11th Sept 2014, and encouraged the LCs present
to get involved. He asked that they visit schools in their local area and offer the leaflets to Principles
to support their already existing policies.
Under the guidance of Zone chair David, the LCs agreed to take it on. Thurles, Cashel, Cahir,
Templemore, Roscrea, Birr and Tipperary became involved.
At a recent Zone meeting they reported to David, that there had been a magnificent response. All
School Principles contacted, had agreed to circulate the leaflets to parents of their students, as they
felt it contained invaluable information. To date the LCs has distributed a total of 11,000, printed
locally by Zone chair David.
Zone 6A is pleased to be involved, and wishes to let other LCs know of the great response for this
project from School Managers contacted.

Tremendous reaction from all the schools involved. The Principals in each school said that while they
had a policy for bullying in place in the form of Group discussion with parents, the participation of
parents was very poor, those present were slow to discuss specific details in relation to their own
situation. They felt that the leaflet would act as a basis for discussion with parents and ultimately with
their children in the privacy of their own home. This project has tremendous potential to assist parents
and children in dealing with something that presents a real problem for young people today.

Portumna Community School and Portumna National School. Both principals welcomed any support to help
with this issue in schools. In both cases leaflets have been sent home with each pupil.
Particular interest was expressed in the Mobile phone protection tips and the Social Media privacy settings
tips.
In Portumna & District Lions Club, a small subcommittee has set up a rota to involve all members in visits
to all the other schools in our district to distribute our remaining boxes of leaflets in early 2015.
As well as this leaflet being so well produced and relevant, this project is proving to be a good "touch base”
exercise with the schools also with a view to stronger collaboration between club and school!
I am working on our Facebook page tonight also to post this leaflet as we get many Likes on the page.

Suggestions for getting your LC involved.
The leaflet explains in simple terms, many aspects of bullying including its prevalence, its
symptoms, the rights of children and parents and policies which are mandatory for schools.
It has been produced because research has shown that at least half of all parents do not have this
vital information, despite efforts to communicate the message through the Internet and Parent
Information meetings.
We suggest that a Lions Club member make appointment to meet schools Principles. Make it clear
that we are not there to encroach in any way, on policy or protocols the school have in place in
relation to Bullying. The leaflet is support for what is already happening in schools. Leaflets are
provided free by Lions Clubs.
Getting the support of the school manager is key, for the success.
Our mission is to request the Principles to have each child in the relevant classes bring a copy of the
leaflet home to their parents/guardians.
For schools who request information on Bullying policy, suggest that they access the Dept. of
Education Web site or check out Antibullyingcampaign.ie

from a psychologist, has helped the Lions Clubs to bring this leaflet to fruition.

Youth Award/Young Ambassador District Final

The District Final of the Lions Youth Award/Young Ambassador Programme took place in the Clarion Hotel
Liffey Valley on Saturday 17th January. The candidates attended interviews with a panel of three adjudicator.
The Chief Adjudicator, Mr. Brendan Sheehy said in his remarks that each candidate showed a great ability
and interest in their local community and that they should be proud of what they have achieved to date. The
four finalists were Tara O'Hanlon sponsored by Newry Club; Rebecca Leahy sponsored by Ennis Club;
Michael Goggin sponsored by Cork Club and Oral Jackman sponsored by Carlow Club. After the interviews
and while the adjudicators were making their deliberations, the candidates attended a workshop with Adam
Harris, CEO of ASIAM and a previous winner of the District Final.
Ultimately the winner was announced and the award and bursary went to Orla Jackman. Orla’s proposed use
of the bursary was to purchase recreational equipment for St. John Ward in Our Lady's Children's Hospital.
The adjudicators were impressed by Orla community involvement which ranged from Gaelic Football with
St. Anne's Club; being a members of the Youth Advisory Council in the Children's Hospital, Tallaght and
being a member of the Meitheal Team. Orla was previously a patient of Our Lady's Children's Hospital and
has organised a number of Charity and fundraising events in support of the hospitals work.
The Multiple District Final takes place in Dudley, Birmingham in February. Onwards and upwards!
YOUTH EXCHANGE OUTWARDS – SUMMER 2015.
Lions Clubs Youth Exchange Outwards is a wonderful pro ject providing youths with the
opportunit y of experiencing new cultures and making internat ional friendships whilst
participat ing in an overseas Lio ns Internat ional Youth Camp.
Clubs considering invit ing a youth to participate in the Lions Exchange programme need
to think about the select ion of the youth, boy or girl, now. Lions Youth Camp details are
listed on the Lions Clubs International website, the list is updated on a monthly basis.
Tradit ionally at this time of the year there is a rush of overseas clubs making applicat ions
worldwide on behalf their youths.
So, how is a youth selected?
First ly they must be sponsored by their local Lio ns Club, in this case sponsoring means the
youth is participating under the wing of Lio nism thus giving them access to Lions Camps
overseas.
Sponsoring a youth need not be a financial cost on the Sponsoring Lio ns Club. Applicants
transport costs to and return from the chosen camp together with camp fees (if applicable)
are usually covered by the youths parents, costs within the chosen Lio ns District are borne
by that District.
Select ion of the youth, boy or girl, in my 105(I) Ireland experience is made in many ways.
A decisio n by a club to reward a youth for outstanding co mmunit y service (in this case the
Sponsor Lions Club covers the transport cost to, and from, the selected Youth Camp), the
select ion of a youth related in any way to a club member, the select ion of a youth on the
recommendat ion of a club member, local school, clergy, doctor etc. Obviously there will
on occasions be youths who wish to participate but do not know how to contact their local
club, in these cases I contact the local Lio ns President on the youths behalf.
The youth must complete the European Applicat ion Form, this asks for family details, their
contact details, the youth’s future plans, the youth’s healt h (allergies, diabetes etc.), health
insurance, travel insurance. The youths, parental and District Officers signatures are also
required.
Your youth will gain the experience o f many worldwide cultures, your club will be proud to
have an Internat ional Ambassador.

Ballynahinch Lions Blub thank the pupils of St. Macartans Primary School & St. Colmcille’s High

competition held at Moyola Golf and Country Club and organised by Cookstown &
Magherafelt Lions Club.

Bray Lions New Year’s Swim
Among the participants Adam Harris, winner of Multi District Young Ambassador of the Year Award
and his brother Minister Simon Harris T.D.
More than 150 swimmers gathered on the beach at Bray, Co. Wicklow on New Year’s Day to plunge into a
cool Irish Sea.
They were taking part in Bray Lions Charity Sea Swim which raised funds for five local charities.
Established 32 years ago as a fun events, the annual Lions Charity Sea Swim is now an integral part of the
Bray calendar with swimmers from nine to ninety maintaining a proud tradition.
Over the years the event has raised more than €310,000 for local causes and this year’s proceeds will help
‘Bray Carers for Carers’, Bray Stroke Club, Bray Poor Relief Fund, Enable Ireland and Bray Lions Senior
Citizens Fund.
This year’s army of brave swimmers included Minister Simon Harris, TD, his brother Adam, a former Lions
MD105 ‘Young Ambassador of the Year’ and the Winchester family from Kenya.
Said Bray Lions Club project leader John McEvoy:
“With many of the swimmers turning out in fancy dress this is always a very enjoyable and colourful event
which raises funds for a wide range of charities”.

In May 1971 twenty four young men gathered for a meeting in the Leinster Arms Hotel. During the meeting which was
sponsored by the Kilkenny City Lions Club it was decided to form a Lions Club in Athy.
It was then an all-male organisation, unlike today when women play a prominent role in the running of the club. Forty
three years after its foundation Athy Lions Club through its members is still heavily committed to fundraising for local
charities, as well as being involved in many community enhancing projects. Within the present Lions Club membership
there are four members who were involved in the initial meeting held in the Leinster Arms hotel 43 years ago. They
attend the monthly Lions Club meetings, as well as involving themselves in the club’s fundraising activities which in
recent months included a cycle rally, a charity auction and the annual Christmas Food Appeal. Their commitment and
dedication over the 43 years of the club’s existence was marked last week with the presentation of Melvin Jones Awards
to Gerry Cleary, Michael Dwyer, Ken Turner and Trevor Shaw.
This is only the second occasion that such awards were made by Athy Lions Club. The award to the four local Lions
Club members was a unique event marked by the presence of the Lions District Governor who travelled from Cork to
present each of the recipients with a Melvin Jones plaque.
The members of Athy Lions Club have made a huge contribution to the local community during the 43 years of the
Club’s existence. Perhaps the most visible reminder of the Club’s work is the sheltered housing scheme in the grounds
of St. Vincent’s Hospital. That was a project headed up by Athy Lions Club, funded in part by government grants and
funds raised locally by the Lions Club members. Another major project was the purchase in conjunction with St.
Michael’s Parish of Dreamland Ballroom on the Kilkenny Road which is now used for sporting and other community
based activities.
Lions can help save lives!
The MedicAlert Foundation was introduced to our Multiple District by the Lions in 1964
and has been promoted by Lions since then. It is a charity dedicated to saving lives, unlike
most if not all of the few other organisations offering medical information services that
operate on a commercial basis.
The MedicAlert Board of Trustees is chaired by the 2011-2012 Council Chairman Lion
Tony Gadsby who recently took over from Past International Director Lion Phil Nathan.
How does it operate?
MedicAlert produces a wide range of jewelry that is engraved to alert first responders in an emergency to hidden medical conditions.
A contact telephone number on the jewelry gives medics anywhere in the world access to more detailed medical information, personal
doctor contact info, next of kin details and the like 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and in over 100 languages. The MedicAlert ID
jewelry speaks for you when you can’t speak for yourself!!
MedicAlert compliments the Message in a Bottle (MIAB) project that is very popular in our District. MIAB covers emergencies at
home. MedicAlert covers emergencies everywhere else in the world!!!
Annual membership costs around €40 – that’s less than 11 cent a day! - and the one off cost of a bracelet or necklace ranges upwards
from just over €30. Any surplus funds generated by MedicAlert are applied to improve services and reduce the membership cost.

How can Lions help?
Lions can help by promoting the benefits of MedicAlert in our local communities.

benefits of MedicAlert membership that have been proven over and over again.
There are tens of thousands of individuals in our District who could benefit from MedicAlert membership and the peace of mind
that it can bring.

I am extending the closing date for this season’s u12 competition as indicated above. Unfortunately I was
unable to progress this project over the last few weeks due to being hospitalized in New Year following a back
problem. I hope to be fully fit by end of February. Please find info below re this project.
This is a soccer tournament sanctioned by the FAI involving the whole of Ireland. The purpose is to promote
Lionism and what we do, to the general public through the medium of Sport.
I am asking your club to get involved by sponsoring a local Soccer club in your area to participate. The first
thing to do is to appoint a local member of your club to head up this youth project and to interact with a local
club to see if they are interested. If you are successful then please fill out application form (see appendix 1)
and return it to me by 15th February along with fee. I will then be in contact with your appointed football
officer. Further info.
• Players must be born on or after 1st January 2003.
• Competition is played on a knockout and geographical basis in early rounds
• Application fee is €50 or £40.
• Teams may be drawn at home or away
• If team is drawn at home, local Lions club pay for Ref and some after match food

Partner’s Tour
Tour of the historical Viking Triangle and a tour of Waterford Crystal manufacturing and showrooms
commencing at 10.00 from Tower Hotel. Lunch is included and return time is approximately 2pm.
There is plenty of opportunities for retail therapy during tour and afterwards.
