This module provides information specific to the international movement of horses and complements
NVAP Module 2: Role of Agencies and Health Certificates.
Upon completion of this module, accredited veterinarians will be able to:
 Describe the economic importance of the United States horse industry;
 Talk with their clients about the risk of international travel leading to global spread of disease;
 Locate resources to ensure that all horses exported from the United States meet the import
requirements of the destination country as well as the return import requirements of the United
States for those moved temporarily to destination countries.

timely diagnosis.

Teresa DeFrancesco, DVM, DACVIM (cardiology) and Diplomate American
College of Veterinary Emergency Critical Care, is professor in Cardiology and Critical Care at North Carolina
State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She has been on the faculty at NCSU since 1995 and has
received numerous teaching awards.
Beyond Floating Teeth: Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and
Treatment for the Equine Practitioner

Standard of care: A discussion of current standards of oral
examination, dental imaging, medical records and prophylactic and
therapeutic techniques for the equine practitioner. Strategies for
competing with non-veterinarian tooth floaters.
Oral examination: This will cover basic instrumentation, dental
charting, oral photography and oral endoscopy, as well as a
discussion of sedation and restraint and periodontal disease.
Dental radiography: In depth discussion of appropriate positioning and technique for obtaining
diagnostic images of all teeth and paradental structures. Radiographic signs of dental disease.
Indications for advanced imaging techniques (computed tomography).
Exodontia: Indications for extraction. Regional anesthesia and constant rate infusion of
sedative/analgesics.Techniques for oral extraction. Surgical extraction of maxillary and
mandibular cheek teeth.
Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis.
Robert M. Baratt, DVM, FAVD, FAVD/Eq, Dipl.AVDC, with the Salem Valley Veterinary Clinic (Salem, CT) is a
Diplomate in the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC), Equine Specialty and travels extensively to
instruct fellow veterinarians and veterinary students in both companion animal and equine dentistry with
lectures and hands-on wetlabs.

The VVMA has a block of rooms at the Hilton Hotel at a special rate of $112 plus tax. This
reduced rate is available on a limited number of rooms and expires on January 26, 2015.
Reservations should be made directly with the Hilton at 802-658-6500. Mention the VVMA to
receive the reduced rate.
Refund Policy
By January 26, a full refund minus a $25 per person processing fee. After January 26, a 50%
refund. No credits will be given for future registrations.
