THE RECTORY
JANUARY 2015
New Year’s Day has not always been the 1st of January in England. While most countries in Western
Europe recognized 1st January as New Year's Day even before they adopted the Gregorian Calendar in
1582, in England New Year’s Day was always the 25th March, this being the Feast of the Annunciation
otherwise known as Lady Day, named thus after the Virgin Mary. The 25th March (being nine months
before Christmas Day) was traditionally the day when the Angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she was
to be the Mother of Jesus. England only adopted 1st January as the start of the New Year in 1752 when
England finally came into step with the rest of Europe and also adopted the Gregorian Calendar. Not only
did we count our years from 25th March to 25th March, meaning that for the first three months of the
year England was still in the previous years as far as Europe was concerned; we were also 11 days behind
Europe since Pope Gregory in 1582 introduced the Leap Year to ensure that every four years the year and
the earth’s orbit round the Sun was re-synchronized. So in England until 1752, the 25th March, the Feast
of the Annunciation to Mary was not only New Year’s Day but also Budget Day when all
accounts were rendered and it was a quarter day for paying rents. Budget Day was
changed in 1752 by the addition of 11 days to the date, hence the reason Budget Day
is traditionally still 6th April today.
You may understandably say “so what?” But for me the fact that England reckoned
the years from Lady Day to Lady Day also indicates something of England’s
traditional veneration of Our Lady Mary the Mother of Jesus. Devotion to Mary
used to be so widespread in England that this country acquired the soubriquet
“Our Lady’s Dowry”. This title was widely used throughout Europe to describe
England in the medieval period, as devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary in
England was particularly strong. It was believed that England belonged in
some special way to Mary, who was seen as the country's special intercessor"
. The late 14th century famous painting called the Wilton Diptych shows the
hapless Richard II kneeling before Mary holding the infant Jesus. In the
picture an angel holds the Cross of St George, the staff of which is
surmounted by an orb featuring a small map of England.
In the Bible, in John’s Gospel we read that Jesus while on
the cross, commended the care of his Mother Mary to his
Beloved Disciple “and from that hour he (the Beloved
Disciple) took her into his own home”. (John 19:27).
That is why so many people have images of Mary in
their own homes on the principle that what Jesus said
to his first disciples also applies to those of us who
aspire to be his later followers. The image of Mary
nursing her Son is a guarantor of the Incarnation, of
the Word becoming flesh as one of us and living
amongst us, sharing our lives, hence its importance
theologically. One of the most ancient prayers,
originally written in Greek, is called sub tuum
praesidium” (Latin = under thy protection) goes
thus:
We fly to thy protection,
O Holy Mother of God;
despise not our petitions
4
in our necessities,
but deliver us always
from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin.
Living as we do in a world that seems both disturbingly uncertain and in places dangerous, I commend our
parishes and all our people at the beginning of this new year to the prayers of Our Lady of England,
praying that you may all have a peaceful and prosperous New Year.
With best wishes,
William

COFFEE MORNING THANK YOU
Many thanks to all those who came and supported, helped and ate lots of cake at the recent coffee
morning. We raised a superb £310, which meant we could go out and a buy a brand new oven for the
Cedar Centre on the very same day!
Helen Boulton
NEW PIANO
We are very grateful to Ted and Lynne Thain for donating their piano to the Cedar Centre. The old
electronic one had some "technical issues" which we were unable to repair, so we were delighted to
receive this excellent replacement. Apparently it was also the one used during The Trust's very first
fundraising event! The excess money raised from the coffee morning will be going towards supplying
special castors for the piano so that the floor is not damaged when it is moved.

PARISH NEWS
As you should know from the flier in the December issue, the subscriptions for the Parish News are now
due for 2015. The price remains at £9 for a yearly subscription or 90p for an individual copy, which is very
good value considering all the information the magazine contains.
It would be very helpful if the money could be paid promptly and if you are out when your deliverer calls
perhaps you could arrange to take it to his or her house. The deliverers do a sterling job every month and
I am very grateful to them. I would also like to thank particularly Sue Humphries and Carol Mackaoui who
make sure that the magazines get to the deliverers on time.
Last but not least, my thanks go to Margaret, Monica and Gwen who count out all the magazines and
fliers and keep me entertained at the same time.
If you know of anyone new to the village who would like a copy of the Parish News please inform Jo in the
Parish Office or myself on 380510 or e-mail [email protected]
On behalf of the Parish News Team I wish you all the best for 2015.

2015 ROOFWORK, FRIENDS AND TREASURE HUNTING
Thank you to everyone who joined in the Raise the Roof sing a long – the money raised will go towards
repairing the leak-prone areas where the roof-hips join the tower and towards the major project for 2015
– replacing the Lady Chapel roof in September. The cost of £32,000 will be met through fundraising, grant
applications and loans.
This year we want to encourage Friends to sign up to make a regular donation - from £5+ a month - £60+
a year. This provides an essential backbone to our work and in return we will be holding an annual
exclusive event and offering priority access to ticketed events. See our website
www.castorchurchtrust.co.uk for how to become a Friend.
This month we will be fixing our 2015 programme – but I can tell you that alongside new history events,
we will be running a Treasure Hunt around the villages in June. It will require general knowledge and good
observation skills! Hunting will be rewarded by afternoon tea and local beer.
Finally – I’d like to welcome Brian Gibson and Richard Perkins as new Trustees – more in the February
News.

'AT HOME' COFFEE MORNING - IN AID OF
MND (MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE)
Thankyou to those who came and supported my coffee morning or who kindly sent donations because
they couldn't make it. The weather helped us all enjoy a morning of drinking fresh coffee eating cakes and
chatting either in the house or the garden. The raffle tickets sold well, all the plants were sold and the
cakes either eaten or sold. A total of £935.50 was raised and has been made up to £1000.00 to give to
MND. The amount is being recorded on the tribute site in memory of Neil Platt on behalf of my brother,
but the actual money will be given to Cambridgeshire North MND to help care for those locally who suffer
from this terrible disease. Thank you again.

POPPY APPEAL
The Poppy Appeal collected a magnificent sum of £940.37. This includes the loose change collection at the
church during the Remembrance Sunday service. My sincere thanks to all involved.

NEWS FROM CASTOR SCHOOL
The school has been filled with Christmas excitement and preparation in the last few weeks of the term.
We were delighted to receive a beautiful Nativity Scene carved from olive wood in Bethlehem. The
Foundation Governors – Rector William, Mrs Maggie Noble, Mr David Edwards and Mrs Chris Murrell
presented it to the school at the start of Advent. It sits proudly on our altar next to our Advent ring and
has been the focus of many discussions and reflections about the true meaning of Christmas.
This message was reinforced
by our wonderful Nativity
production featuring all of
our children in Reception,
Year 1 and Year 2.
‘BAUBLES’ focused on the
story of Jesus’ birth revisited
through the story of school
children preparing for
Christmas. It featured some
familiar characters in the
roles of the school teachers.
I was particularly impressed
by Mr Ratch’s organisation
of the school featured in the
play! Our children did an
excellent job of the
production with great
singing and acting.
Mrs Salisbury did a wonderful job of orchestrating the proceedings and everyone has thoroughly enjoyed
the show.
It was nice to welcome The Evergreens along for their Christmas lunch and they were treated to a
performance afterwards.
We say farewell to Mrs Sue Marsden, one of our teachers, at the end of the term. Mrs Marsden is a keen
and able linguist and has passionately trumpeted the importance of learning a language in the four years
she has been at the school. In addition she has reinvigorated singing and performance organising our
Christmas Concert for our Year 3 to Year 6 pupils as well as other exciting musical events in the past. She
will be greatly missed and we wish her all the best for the future. Mrs Helen Boulton will be taking on her
role of teacher in Year 1 for three days a week and will be working with our Deputy Head, Miss Selina
Pacey. We will be looking to recruit a full time replacement for September 2015.
To keep fully up to date of the comings and goings of our busy school please have a look at our website
www.castorschool.com.
2015 will undoubtedly be another busy year and one we are looking to fill with exciting learning
opportunities for our pupils. If you are able to help in anyway please do contact the school.

money for a Village Defibrillator. It is expected that the system will cost around £2500
to install and it is planned that the unit will be installed outside the Village Hall. The
Parish Council have donated an initial £500 to the fund. If you wish to contribute or
donate – please contact [email protected] or contact Marholm
Parish Council.
Marholm Pudding Club:
The Marholm Pudding Club continues in popularity and we again welcomed the plates
and spoons of many. This included another contingent from Castor and Ailsworth and
even better, they have promised to bring a pudding to the next meeting for us to
sample. (Shall not let you forget that, Brian!)
We had a glorious array of puddings to choose from at the last meeting, from the
traditional festive Christmas goodies, to proper rib sticking winter warmers and as usual
there were remarkably few leftovers! Convivial chat and mulled cider from Chris, means the hour passes
surprisingly quickly.
The Pudding Club attendance money ensures that at each meeting the club manages to break even, but
even so we seem to have acquired a small profit, which will be donated to the Marholm Defibrillator Fund
at the end of the year.
A visit to the Marholm Pudding Club is essential! Puddings galore, traditional or audacious, they are all
available to sample & savour for just £2 (only £1.00 if you bring a pudding). The next meeting will be in
the village hall as usual on Thursday 5th February 7– 8pm when we will be celebrating our second
birthday. Want to know more? Contact Bella Craven or email: [email protected]
Marholm Book Club:
Thank you to all who made the Marholm Book club meeting on 20th November. Many
had read at least one of the two books. The two books chosen for the next read are
“The Humans” (a sort of Sci-fi comedy ) and “Closer than you think” (a scary
psychological thriller)
Marholm Book Club meets on a regular basis. Come and join the next meeting on 22nd
January, 7.30pm @ The Fitzwilliam Arms (in the Snug), Marholm. No need to read the book(s) – just come
along and enjoy a friendly chat. Want to know more? Contact Sue Welch 01733 262904 or email:
