Welcome
to the February edition of the Wickham Bishops
Parish Magazine.
On the opposite page are some happy memories—photos of our
Christingle Service at the beginning of December when our 2014
Christmas festivities started.
February is the month we celebrate Valentine's Day—a chance to
tell someone special that you love them. St Valentine was a priest
who secretly married couples when Emperor Claudius II decreed
that young men were not permitted to marry as that made them
better fighting soldiers. In 269 AD, Valentine was caught and
sentenced to a three part execution of a beating, stoning, and
finally decapitation, all because of his stand for Christian marriage.
Valentine has now come to be known as the patron saint of lovers.
On that happy note, may I wish all readers a very happy and loving
Valentine’s day on 14th February.

A message from Ian Forward, Churchwarden
Dear Friends
February can be a bit of a depressing
month with celebrations of Christmas
and New Year now behind us. Mentally
we hunker down to wait for the better
weather and for the appearance of spring
flowers to brighten our days.
However, we do have a bright spot on our calendar—the arrival of
our new priest-in-charge, Revd Hilary Le Sève and her husband
John. Her Licensing Service will take place on 3rd February and
from then she is ready to start running the parish. All who have
met her have been impressed by her lovely, caring personality. We
give thanks that she has come to minister in this parish as well as
taking up duties for half her time as Assistant Director of Ordinands
in Chelmsford Diocese.
Many of you may have already heard that the Diocese has put the
Rectory up for sale. Another property will be purchased in the
village for Hilary and John to move to.
The life of our church has thankfully run smoothly during the vacancy with assistance from local priests and retired clergy. Thanks
to everyone who has helped during this period.
We are very pleased to have welcomed Kate Farr to lead the St
Bartholomew’s Youth Club which has an exciting programme for
the spring term. For more information about the Club, take a look
at our website under Young People and also on page 8 of the
magazine.

Over the next few months you may notice some work inside the
main entrance of the church behind the font. This project has been
in the pipeline for quite a while but plans have now been accepted to
develop this as a Welcome Area including storage and display units.
We are very grateful for a legacy from Margaret Simmonds who
attended St Bartholomew’s Church for many years that has enabled
us to go forward with the work on the Welcome Area. This work will
be done in conjunction with building work to renew a large patch of
damp plaster on the inside of the west wall. We hope that the work
will take place within the next couple of months and that it will not
cause too much inconvenience.
My fellow-churchwarden, Dorothy and myself would like to extend a
very warm welcome to Hilary and John to this parish and look
forward to working with them.

PARKING FOR LICENSING SERVICE. We are expecting a large number
of visitors to Hilary’s Licensing Service on 3rd February. To avoid parking
congestion we will be allocating the church car park for visitors use
only. So please do not park in the church car park, nor along Church
Road as there will be a coach party and the coach will need access to the
front of the church. It would be much appreciated (to avoid parking
problems) if local people could walk if possible, and/or share lifts and park
in the side roads away from the church. The front of the church will be for
“Drop Off” only. Any queries, please contact Ian Forward 07778-449842.

HELP REQUIRED FOR
ST BARTHOLOMEW’S CHURCH MEMORIAL GARDEN
There are a number of loyal volunteers who already help to look after the
roses from April to October but each year the number of helpers
decreases. There is no heavy gardening, just light duties such as
watering, dead heading roses, weeding, hoeing etc.
If you could spare an hour on a couple of occasions over the Summer
please could you contact Sue on 892032 or by e-mail
to [email protected] by the end of February.
St Bartholomew’s Youth Club
St Bartholomew’s Youth Club meets every other week on a Friday from
6pm to 7:30pm in the Church Hall. Each session is themed where you
have the opportunity to take part in activities or just relax and socialise
with friends. We have put together our new programme for Spring and
look forward to activities such as fa ilm night, making our own explosions,
producing homemade soap and cosmetics and chocolate egg making.
We also enjoy facilities including an Xbox, table tennis table, table football
and tuck shop. As the days get lighter, football is always popular and we
are planning outings such as visiting a high rope centre, bike rides and
Laser Quest.
If you would like to join the club (and it would be particularly lovely to have
some more girls!) please contact Kate Farr, Youth club Leader on 07711
946134 or email [email protected]. Minimum age for new admissions
is 10 years old and subscription is £2 per session.

Women’s Christian Fellowship
In December we had a very jolly afternoon at our W.C.F. Christmas
Party. After a welcoming drink, we settled down to a delicious festive
tea, served by the committee and washed down with copious cups
of tea. After the refreshments were cleared away, we settled down
to play a game, which ended hilariously but, I hope, with everyone
remembering which was their left hand and which was their right!
Christmas cards and a small gift were given to everyone before the
raffle was drawn and a reminder of our meeting in January. The
subject for our next meeting is as yet untitled but will have a Lenten
theme so why not make a date to join us in the Church Hall at 2.30
on Wednesday 25th February; hope to see you there.

In the light of so much violence and killing in our world, and remembering
the people of the Paris sieges, here are some wise words from Mother
Teresa:
People are often unreasonable and self-centered.
Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives.
Be kind anyway.
If you are honest, people may cheat you.
Be honest anyway.
If you find happiness, people may be jealous.
Be happy anyway.
The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough.
Give your best anyway.
For you see, in the end, it is between you and God.
It was never between you and them anyway.

St Nicholas Church, Little Braxted—A bit of history
St Nicholas, Little Braxted, is one of the smallest churches in Essex. It was
originally built in 1120 but there is only a small part of the original
building still standing today. The rest of the church was built in the 14th
century. On the outside it is very simple, almost plain. But the surprise is
the interior.
When you walk through the main door you are greeted by an amazing
sight, for the interior is richly furnished and decorated in quite an
unexpected way. The walls and much of the furnishings are decorated with
stencil-work and pictures. Practically no surface is left unadorned, and the
combination of pictures, texts and symbolic devices reflects the theological
as well as the artistic creed of the man who was Rector from 1881 to 1900.
Revd Ernest Geldart originally trained as an architect and
was particularly interested in the Arts and Crafts
movement. He worked for the firm of church decorators
and furnishers Cox & Sons (later Cox, Sons, Buckley &
Co) after he became Rector of Little Braxted in 1881.
The company paid him more than he obtained from his
parish living.
When he came to Little Braxted Church, he found the basic structure in
good shape (it had been restored in 1856 by Ewan Christian), but the inside
was, to his mind, rather dull, and not what he considered a church should
look like. “God’s house”, Geldart wrote, “ought
to be the finest house, and the most beautiful
house in a parish”, and that is what he set out to
create.
The paintings on the reredos depict the Old
Testament forerunners of Holy
Communion. Shields round the top of the
chancel wall carry emblems of the Passion,
while the emblems on the shields along the
chancel screen represent Christ himself.
14
The three large pictures show the Nativity, the
Apostles’ Creed, and the three Trees (Knowledge,
Healing, and Life), and thus encapsulate the
fundamentals of Christianity.
The decoration also includes a number of chronograms:
Latin inscriptions containing letters that double as
Roman numerals (i, v, l, etc) which, added together,
come to 1884, when the major part of the work was
completed.
Not everyone approved of the changes that Geldart made, because they
were accompanied by elaborate services, with vestments, candles, incense,
processions and other forms of ritual, which for many people too closely
followed Roman Catholic practice. Letters of complaint appeared in the
local papers and Geldart was even threatened with prosecution; but
gradually his changes came to be accepted, and the numbers attending his
services steadily grew.
Revd Geldart was also a skilled craftsman in many other ways too. The
present organ in St Bartholomew's Church was installed in 1895 and the
oak casing was carved by him..
Over the years the wall paintings at St Nicholas became extremely dirty
and those in the north aisle were badly affected by damp. In 1989-92 they
were restored by Donald Smith, and the brocade and raffia wall coverings –
another unusual example of Geldart’s taste in interior decoration – were
restored by Rachel Ricketts. Further repairs to the roof and ceiling were
completed in 2005.
Many people feel they would like to support this special church. Becoming
a Friend of Little Braxted for an annual subscription of £30 will contribute
towards repairs and preservation of the church. Friends also receive an
annual newsletter to keep them up to date. An annual concert also
contributes towards raising money for the church.

From The Parish Council ...
The regular monthly meeting of the Parish Council was held on Tuesday 6th
January, and a meeting of the Planning Committee was held on Friday 16th
January. The minutes of these meetings can be read on the Parish Council
website at www.wickhambishopsparishcouncil.org
There is a problem with a flooded ditch in Kelvedon Road which is causing
standing water on the road surface. This has been reported to the Essex
CC Highways Department, but until the ditch is drained, please will drivers
take particular care on Kelvedon Road and slow down so as not to spray
water onto pedestrians, particularly as these can be children on their way
to school. The raised drain cover in The Wellands has also been reported,
but no action has yet been taken.
Several residents have asked about the information boards that were previously
sited at Wickham Bishops’ “Ancient Monument” – the old wooden railway bridge
adjacent to Wickham Place. The Council are pleased to report that replacement
boards have been designed and are currently being manufactured, to be in place
within the next few months. One will show details of the old Witham to Maldon
railway line and the other gives information about walks in and around Wickham
Bishops.
The Council are hoping to lease the Air Raid Shelter, in the Library car
park, from ECC for a nominal rent. If it passes an inspection, it is hoped
that this monument can be given ‘listed’ status to preserve it against possible future development.
Community Speedwatch has now been active in the village for 18 months. In
2014, volunteers undertook 81 checks, each lasting about one hour. These
checks resulted in a total of 921 vehicles being recorded and reported to Essex
Police as exceeding the speed limit. The average of just over 11 vehicles recorded per check hides some extremes with none and one being recorded on
two checks in Church Road, but 32 and 33 recorded on two separate checks in
Witham Road. The teams have concentrated on Witham Road, Beacon Hill,
Maypole Road and Kelvedon Road where excess speed seems to be most
prevalent. Checks will continue to be carried out there, with occasional checks
at other sites. If you any have any queries, please contact
[email protected]
The next meeting of the Council will be held on Tuesday the 3rd February
2015 in the village hall at 7.30 pm. A Planning Committee meeting will be
held (if needed) on Friday 13th February 2015, at 11:30 a.m. Councillors
may be contacted individually, or via the Council’s clerk on 07542 190176, or
by email [email protected]

In January, members were delighted to welcome Mike Logan-Wood,
who presented a most entertaining talk about “Seasonal Bird
Visitors”.
At the next meeting, on Thursday 12th February, there will be a
very brief A.G.M. (under 10 minutes) followed by our Chairman,
Mike Hall, speaking about “Flowers for Valentine’s Day”. The
meeting is in the Church Hall, starting at 7:30 p.m.
For more details of the Horticultural Club, please contact Chairman
Mike Hall by email – [email protected]
Topical Tips for the Garden in February
• If you have not already done so, prune fruit trees as soon as
possible. Try to shape the tree so that the centre remains open to
improve air movement and so minimise disease.
• If we get any meaningful snowfall, this is a good time to re-shape
conifers that may have been damaged.
• Cover a crown of rhubarb with an old dustbin having first fed it
with a good general purpose fertiliser (or pelleted poultry manure)
and surrounded it with some straw. In 6-8 weeks there will be some
lovely rhubarb to eat.
• Any hedges that still need to be trimmed should be dealt with
now before the birds start to build their nests.
• Plant shallots bulbs around the end of February so long as the
soil is not frozen or too wet.
• February is a good month to sow some tomato seeds - use a
shallow tray and germinate them on the kitchen window-sill.

SCHOOL NEWS
As part of our studies, some of us have enjoyed getting out and
about in the community.
St Peter’s Church Visit
On Tuesday 9th December, all of Year 3 went to St Peter’s
Church. We partnered up with somebody for the walk from the
school to the church. It was a bitter winter’s morning so we had
to wear hats, scarves and gloves. We went there because we
were learning about Jesus’ baptism and the nativity when Jesus
was born.
We walked from school to the church which took about 20
minutes. When we got there, we saw the vicar, Rev Pearce, who
showed us inside and told us what all of the objects inside the
church were. Inside, there were beautiful stained glass windows.
After that we sang some Christmas carols and a man played the
organ. He played Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and We Wish
You a Merry Christmas. It was fun. Finally, we walked back to
school.

Choir in the Community
On Tuesday 9th December, some of the school’s choir members
went to sing at Honeywood Hall. We walked to the hall, took our
coats off and got ready to sing to the lunch club members. While
we were there, we sang some lovely Christmas songs and “Don’t
Stop Believing”. Even though we sometimes got the words wrong,
we carried on! It was lovely to see the smiles on the people’s
faces – it made us want to sing even more!
