Hallett Memorial Library, Crosby Library Lovers’ Month celebrated The Jessie F. Hallett Memorial Library and the JFHML Friends Foundation have designated February as Library Lovers' Month. This is a time established to acknowledge libraries for the powerful role they play in our society, helping people of all ages and walks of life connect quickly and efficiently with the information they need for school, work and personal fulfillment. Throughout the month we will have special programming for adults and children. For children, our Pre-school Story Hour led by Story Ladies Deb Weide, Sharon Beaman, Becky Munns and Peggi Beseres is held each Wednesday morning at 10:30. Story Hour continues throughout the month with fun-filled themes of I'm Sick!, Valentine's Day, Elmer and Friends & more. A group of community members and staff will be meeting in February to finalize the mission statement, objectives and first year goals for “IU2U” (It's Up to You!) a teen mentoring project which is to become an imbedded program of library outreach for teens well into the future. Adult readers are enjoying a library program of their own— “Hot Reads for Cold Nights”— with 50+ registered readers. During the course of this popular winter program, over 160 books have been read since Jan. 5. It is still not too late to sign up! In February the library is proud to present “Sizzlin Thursdays.” Each Thursday evening special presenters will be on hand to share their knowledge. All programs are free, open to the public and sponsored by the JFHML Friends Foundation. As an amateur, he has studied, consulted experts and journeyed to some of the battlefields of Europe. These battlefields have fueled a deep historical knowledge and many questions, which he shares with visitors at the Fort Ripley Museum. He likes to use the museum artifacts, visitors’ stories and his travel pictures to understand the people represented by those artifacts in telling their story. “I like to do the narratives, reconciling historical chronology with personal examples. I try to be historically accurate, but my goal is to provide our museum visitors with entertainment and a personal experience”. Van der Hagen’s presentation about WWI and WW II includes Normandy, Ypres, Bastogne and the Netherlands Margraten. His narratives and pictures from his battlefield visits are a rembrance of the magnitude of death and suffering of individuals that fought and died narrated through personal stories. He volunteers regularly as a docent for the Fort Ripley Museum. He shares this passion for military history with museum visitors and has collected many of their stories, which he will weave into his narrative.
