2. School Daze at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre Jan 23-Mar 6
To celebrate Charlotte Street Arts Centre’s 10-year anniversary in 2015, the centre is joining with classrooms across the city to bring you
School Daze. School Daze is a series of student art exhibitions hosted in the Penny Gallery at Charlotte Street Arts Centre, celebrating the
rich history of the building. Students from grades 1 – 12 in eight Fredericton schools have been learning about life as a student of
Charlotte Street School, the place of learning for hundreds of primary students from 1885 well into the mid-twentieth century. Join us as
students present their visual imaginings of School Daze past, present and future!
The exhibition runs from January 23 to March 6, 2015 in the Penny Gallery in the Charlotte Street Arts Centre. For more information visit:

3. Capital Area Chapter of the Irish Canadian Cultural Association of NB presents James Joyce Exhibit Jan 30-Feb 5
An exhibit on the life and times of noted Irish author, James Joyce, will be on display at the Provincial Archives Exhibition Hall, UNB
campus, from Friday, January 30 – Thursday, February 5, from 9am – 5pm, except for Sunday. The exhibit is on loan from the Embassy of

5. UNB Art Centre Celebrates Black History Month Feb 2-6
In celebration of Black History Month, the UNB Art Centre is pleased to welcome Sylvia D. Hamilton to Memorial Hall for a poetry reading
on Thursday, February 5 at 7pm. She is an award-winning filmmaker and acclaimed poet. Dr. Hamilton’s films have been screened on CBC,
TVO, the Knowledge Channel, and on university campuses across the country. She has been honoured with many awards for her work,
including a Gemini award, the CBC Television Pioneer Award, and Nova Scotia’s Portia White Prize for Excellence. Her collection of
poetry,And I Alone Escaped to Tell You, was published by Gaspereau Press in 2014.

Much of Dr. Hamilton’s work exposes the systemic racism that Black Canadians have experienced across the country. Her collection of
poems, And I Alone Escaped to Tell You, deals with the settlement of African peoples in Nova Scotia, and discusses the complex layers of
the lives of early Black Nova Scotians and the generations that followed.
In addition to the reading, a lunchtime film series will run from Monday, February 2 to Friday, February 6, screening Dr. Hamilton’s films as
well as others related to the Black History of Canada. All films will be screened at Memorial Hall, starting at 12pm.

This film exposes the segregation of schools in Nova Scotia and Ontario. The policies of segregation officially ended in the provinces in
1954 and 1964, respectively, but remained in operation as late as 1983, when the last segregated school closed in Nova Scotia. Dr.

8. The Maritime-Guatemala Breaking the Silence Network and MCAF present Noche Latina Feb 6
The Maritime-Guatemala Breaking the Silence Network and the Multicultural Association of Fredericton Inc (MCAF) will co-host Noche
Latina on Friday, February 6, 6pm-9pm at Wilmot United Church, located at 473 King Street, Fredericton. Noche Latina will feature a
traditional Latin American meal, music and dance as well as the silent auction.
All proceeds go towards the MCAF Newcomer Scholarship Fund and the Fredericton chapter of the Breaking the Silence Network to

9. Branch Out Productions presents Willy Wonka: The Musical Feb 6 & 7
Roald Dahl’s deliciously dark tale of young Charlie Bucket and the mysterious confectioner Willy Wonka comes to life in this production
based on the 1971 classic movie. Featuring a chocolate garden, an army of squirrels, the curiously peculiar Oompa-Loompas, and a local
cast ranging from 6 years-old to 60+, this one hour production is a great family show and the perfect length for audiences of any age. Willy
Wonka is choc-full of fantastical treats to dazzle your senses.

computer geek Michael Dork and his friends are about to change the world if they win the race to create the Internet! Michael’s also
discovered a girl, Holly, a prospect (almost) as exciting as his love of binary. Loserville gives us the seventies with a cast of characters that
are totally recognizable and a score that’s entirely contemporary. This is a North America debut for this new musical!

Chinese New Year Gala
The Chinese Cultural Association of New Brunswick (CCANB) will be hosting its Annual Gala for the Chinese Lunar New Year (the year of
golden sheep) and the main theme for the Gala is “Maple Leaf on Silk Road”. It will demonstrate the everlasting history of the business
trade and culture exchange between China and other countries in the world. It will also showcase the multicultural spirit in Canada,
symbolized by the maple leaf in our new home. With traditional Chinese folk dances, instruments and songs this will be a great
opportunity to come and enjoy the richness of Chinese culture.

Symphony New Brunswick presents
Celebrating Our Heritage
Returning to her native province, soprano Suzie Leblanc presents two song cycles composed for her by Christos Hatzis and Alasdair
Maclean based on poems by Elizabeth Bishop. Ms. Leblanc will be accompanied by SNB Chamber ensemble Camerata NB and winds
ensemble Ventus Machina. She will also premier three traditional Acadian songs in new arrangements written by Moncton composer
Andrew Creeggan. Elizabeth Bishop, winner of the 1956 Pulitzer Prize for her book of Poems, North and South, loved the Atlantic
provinces and retained a strong connection to the ocean and coastal wildlife despite an adventurous life that led her throughout Europe
and the Americas. The time as a child spent in Atlantic Canada was her happiest and she returned to this time often in her poetry and her
thoughts. Our common Atlantic Heritage and what this means to us all here in New Brunswick, is celebrated in this exquisite February
Concert. The orchestra will also present Benjamin Britten’s first opus, Sinfonietta, composed when Britten was 18. Rounding out the
program is Edvard Grieg’s Holberg Suite. Symphony New Brunswick is proud of its ensembles Camerata NB and Ventus Machina, as they
have delighted audiences throughout the province by presenting national quality concerts in smaller venues in a varied, innovative style.
Tickets are $40 for adults and $10 for students, and are available through the Playhouse Box Office.

joining the band from Vancouver’s experimental music community, Kenton Loewen, Gordon Grdina, John Walsh (and often Jesse Zubot, JP

of the winner and runner-up, I Am by Jena McLean and Nothing Left by Kira Smith! Featuring casts of high school students and directed by
Jared Mallard, the plays will be presented as a double-bill at 7pm on February 9 and 10 at the Tom Morrison Theatre, FHS.

Elsa & Fred brings together Hollywood legends Christopher Plummer (Barrymore) and Shirley MacLaine (Bernie) — who previously shared
the screen in Richard Attenborough’s 2007 film Closing the Ring — as two aging lovebirds who discover that it’s never too late to make
dreams come true.
Plummer stars as the straight-laced Fred, a recently widowed gentleman in his seventies who is forced by his daughter Lydia (Marcia Gay
Harden, Magic in the Moonlight) to move into a small apartment complex. There, he meets his new neighbour Elsa (MacLaine), who has
dreamed for sixty years of recreating the famous Fontana di Trevi scene from Fellini’s La Dolce Vita with the great love of her life — a love
that she has yet to meet. Storming into Fred’s orderly life like a whirlwind, Elsa determines to teach him the true value of the time that he
has left, and to live the precious moments that remain of his life to the fullest. Gradually letting down his defences, Fred finds new
inspiration in Elsa’s fervent will to live, and the pair set out to make Elsa’s long-held dream come true.
Screen veterans Plummer and MacLaine have remarkable chemistry in this affecting story of late-in-life love, which also features solid
supporting work from Scott Bakula, Chris Noth, George Segal, and James Brolin. Both heartbreaking and heartening, Elsa & Fred’s

15. The NFTC’s Live Audio Workshop Series Features the Works of Two Local Playwrights Feb 11
The Live Audio Workshop Series: Recorded at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre using our patented Soundmatronic Technology.
This February, the Next Folding Theatre Company will continue producing their Live Audio Workshop Series, in which new scripts by
Canadian artists are workshopped and then read and recorded in front of a live Fredericton audience. This year’s featured scripts include
Gordon Mihan’s The Beavercreek Vacancy and Michael Woodside’s Panopticon.
The Beavercreek Vacancy by Gordon Mihan
Fran lives a quiet, monotonous life running the Beavercreek Motel with her friend Alfred, a perpetual freeloader. When a Stranger arrives
one evening, he seemingly brings about an oncoming storm, forcing Fran and Alfred to batten down the hatches before they, and their
home, are washed away.
Panopticon by Michael Woodside
A writer has written a new play and a director is determined to direct it. The actor has a few questions, and the security guard and janitor
have all sorts of suggestions. Sometimes you just have to throw yourself out of the tower for art.
Curated by NFTC veteran producer Brandon Hicks, and sponsored by Picaroons’ Traditional Ales, the Live Audio Workshops offer the
audience a chance to enjoy great beer as they listen to some amazing local writing. This year’s audio workshop will be held in the
Auditorium at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre, February 11, 2015 at 7:00pm.

Shred Kelly is a formulation of friends and foot stomping good times born in the East Kootenay’s of British Columbia. Hailing from the
town of Fernie, the five piece band is best known for mixing clawhammer banjo riffs that tear the fabric of space and time with ambient
synth, high voltage guitar, fierce drums, and hauntingly sweet vocal harmonies to produce a sound that has been properly coined “Stoke

17. Finding Dawn: Shedding Light on Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women Feb 13
Cinema Politica Fredericton and Reproductive Justice NB present Finding Dawn on Friday, February 13 at 7pm at Conserver House, located

Dawn Crey, Ramona Wilson and Daleen Kay Bosse are just three of the estimated 1,100 Aboriginal women who have gone missing or been
murdered in Canada over the past 30 years. Acclaimed Métis filmmaker Christine Welsh embarks on an epic journey to shed light on these
murders and disappearances that remain unresolved to this day. She begins at Vancouver’s skid row where more than 60 poor women
disappeared and travels to the “Highway of Tears” in northern British Columbia where more than two dozen women (all but one Native)
have vanished.

18. The Art of Printmaking exhibition begins at Gallery 78 Feb 13
Original multiples take time and care to create. There are many different types of original multiples, also known as “prints,” from etchings
and engravings to serigraphs and linocuts. This type of art making is as original as any painting and often much more labour intensive.
Come learn about the art of printmaking and view exquisite works by Ann Manuel, Bruno Bobak, Steven Rhude, Robert Rutherford,
Charlotte Jones, Christine Koch, Francis Wishart, and more. Each artist has a unique hand and each brings sensitivity to their chosen forms

On the heels of her triumphant Met performances in Eugene Onegin, soprano Anna Netrebko takes on another Tchaikovsky heroine in the
first opera of this intriguing double bill, consisting of an enchanting fairy tale (Iolanta) followed by an erotic psychological thriller (Duke
Bluebeard’s Castle). Netrebko stars as the beautiful blind girl who experiences love for the first time in Iolanta, while Nadja Michael is the
unwitting victim of the diabolical Bluebeard, played by Mikhail Petrenko. Both operas are directed by Mariusz Trelinski, who was inspired
by classic noir films of the 1940s. Iolanta also stars Piotr Beczala, and Valery Gergiev conducts both operas.
The live performance (Russian and Hungarian with English subtitles) is presented on Saturday, February 14 at 1:30pm. There will be an
encore presentation on Saturday, April 11 at 12pm.

The winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, David Lindsay-Abaire's Rabbit Hole is an unexpected mix of humour and heart-break
which explores the duality of healing. A carefully distant wife, an easy-going husband, a rebellious sister, a well-meaning mother, and an
earnest young man all find themselves rebuilding their new lives after a devastating loss, stumbling and bonding along the way. At times
hilarious, at other times heart-wrenching, this poignant play will be directed and produced as a thesis production by Drama Minor
students, with a cast of local Fredericton theatre talent.

24. St. Thomas Musical Theatre presents Spring Awakening Feb 18-22
The show, set in late 19th century Germany, is based on the controversial German play Spring Awakening (1891) by Frank Wedekind. The
musical tells the tumultuous story of teenagers discovering their own sexuality. Along with receiving Drama Desk Awards and a Grammy
Award, the original Broadway production won 8 Tony Awards including the 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical.

This production will be staged in the STU Black Box Theatre from February 18-22. All performances begin at 7pm.

25. Recycle Your Old Electronics at the UNB Art Centre and Help Us Create Art
Wondering what to do with your old batteries, cell phones, VCR's, microwaves, TVs and other outdated or broken electronics? Bring them
to Memorial Hall on the UNB campus until April 9.
In recognition of World Water Day 2015, the UNB Art Centre will host a special exhibition by ArtZone, Fredericton’s student art collective,
to bring awareness to environmental issues around the theme of water. Many of the hazardous materials found in discarded electronic
devices leach into the soil during rainfall and can have dangerous effects on our eco-system. E-waste is one of the fastest growing
pollutants in landfills. 20-50 million metric tons of e-waste is disposed of globally each year. Currently, only 12.5% of e-waste is being
recycled. ArtZone invites you to become an active participant in environmental stewardship.
ArtZone will create sculptures out of your e-waste and exhibit them in the galleries in an exhibition called Heavy Metal, March 13 through
April 9. ArtZone is made up of students from UNB, STU, and NBCCD.
E-waste collected for Heavy Metal, will be recycled by local e-cycling company, Beaverdam Recyclers. Don’t throw it away. Use it some
other way! Bring your e-waste to Memorial Hall and do your part to shape the future! A list of recyclables can be found on our UNB Art
Centre’s Facebook page, or the Recycling Event Page.

Hold. This is a free storytelling workshop.
We want to hear your stories, Fredericton! National storytelling initiative Passages Canada is coming to Fredericton to gather local stories
of immigration, cultural identity, and heritage at this free workshop to be held at the Fredericton Intercultural Centre, located at 28
Saunders Street (the old YMCA on the Exhibition Grounds).
Help us capture the cultural diversity of Fredericton: bring an object or a photograph that tells a story of your immigration journey, your
heritage, or your family’s ancestry. This could be: a ticket stub, a letter, a piece of clothing, currency, a family heirloom, a family
photograph, a toy, travel documents, or anything else that is meaningful to you. Nous invitons les francophones à partager leurs histoires
en français!
Facilitators from Passages Canada will offer exercises and tips on how to tell a compelling story and improve communications skills.
Objects and stories will be recorded so that they can be added to Passages Canada’s Story Archive, which is a “living archive” of Canada’s

1. Apply to the City of Fredericton’s Arts, Culture, and Heritage Funding Program
Applications are now being accepted for the 2015 City of Fredericton Arts, Culture and Heritage Funding Program. An additional $10,000
has been approved by Council to increase projects from the local multicultural community. This is in response to recommendations
included in the City’s Culture Plan, approved last summer.
The annual funding program is designed to encourage new projects or activities in the creative arts, culture, and heritage sectors. Nonprofit organizations arts, culture and heritage organizations are eligible for small grants to assist with festivals, events, series, projects, and
shared equipment.
Since the program was established in 2001, support has been provided to a variety of cultural projects and events including music, theatre
and film festivals, exhibitions, artists-in-residency programs, theatre productions, heritage publications, concert series, workshops and
demonstrations.

3. City of Fredericton Seeks Nominations for Intercultural Award
The City of Fredericton is accepting nominations for the third annual Intercultural Award. The award was created to recognize an
individual, group or business that has demonstrated a sustained commitment and effort to enhance Fredericton’s cultural-diversity and
inclusiveness.
Nominations will be evaluated based on criteria that include:





Promoting cultural diversity awareness, harmony and understanding;
Building skills and knowledge of newcomers to allow them to participate fully in our community;
Engaging international students and youth so they feel connected to the community and want to stay;
Encouraging involvement of newcomers in sports, the arts, and other community programs creating a sense of belonging;
Business mentorship to immigrants to allow them to successfully start a new business, and more.
Nominations can be submitted by any interested party, excluding family members of the nominee. Self-nominations cannot be accepted.
Nominations will be reviewed by a selection committee and the award will be presented at a Fredericton City Council meeting.
