Lectures at the Museum:
MAY BE OF INTEREST TO PROSPECTORS
February
Wednesday 25 February 2015
David Nixon, Exploration Geologist, KCGM
“Clz – Not All Laterites are Created Equal”
One of the common questions asked by prospectors looking at a geology map is: what rock
has the gold in it? The answer is Czl, this is the geology map code for laterite. Usually the
prospector will return frustrated and with nothing to show for their efforts after working a
patch of laterite. Why is it that some laterites contain abundant gold and some contain
nothing?
David Nixon, a Senior Exploration Geologist who currently works in an around Kalgoorlie,
will explain what is it about the physical properties of gold and the features in the natural
environment that the prospector can use to find gold easier.

Bob Fagan, Adjunct Professor, Curtin University
“Tales from the Archaean of the Eastern Goldfields
Imagine an environment, so hostile and foreign as being more
like another planet than the planet Earth we currently know:
 an atmosphere so thick it would crush you
 a perpetual blood red sky composed of more than 90% CO2 and devoid of oxygen,
 a year of over 1000 days, each only 8 hours long
 a moon four times larger in the sky and a feeble sun of low luminosity
 continuous submarine lava flows and explosive volcanism
 a sea (more like soup) brimming with primitive bacteria, enormous organic
molecules, saturated with dissolved iron, with tidal ranges of 10 metres replete and
with drifting icebergs
 an early ancient (2.7 billion year) coastline of Australia with a broad sandy beach and
coastal plain just west of Kalgoorlie
 an enormous snow-capped and glaciated mountain range over 1000 kilometres in
length and extending from Coolgardie back as far as Merriden.
This is just some of what the Kalgoorlie region was like during the Archaean period.
Bob has been a senior lecturer in the Department of Exploration and Mining Geology at the
Western Australian School of Mines. Dr Fagan holds the position of Adjunct Professor,
actively pursuing a range of academic, teaching and research interests with Curtin
University, through the Curtin Business School, the Department of Applied Geology and the
Western Australian School of Mines
For over 25 years Bob has worked on all aspects of gold, prospecting, mineral exploration,
geochemistry and the geological evolution of the Eastern Goldfields of W.A
