SCHOLARSHIPS FOR THE CLASS OF 2015 Applicants will be considered for each scholarship for which they are eligible. All Scholarships The Betty Jones Scholarship ($2,690) The Betty Jones Scholarship is in honor of Betty Jones, a long-time member of the Northern Virginia Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., who excelled as a leader in her church, in her sorority, in her career, and in the community. In recent years Betty Jones had to overcome adversity and several challenges. Despite these obstacles, Betty Jones continued to inspire others. This one-time award is for an African-American female student planning to pursue an education and career in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). Preference will be given to a student attending a historically black college or university (HBCU), demonstrating financial need as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and who has overcome adversity. Graduating seniors with a minimum grade point average of C (2.5 on a 4.0 scale) may apply. The Gillard Memorial Scholarship ($1,000) The Gillard Memorial Scholarship is in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Gillard, Sr., parents of ten children, who found support to give the gift of a college education to the first of ten children. That first of ten children had four children who all got the gift of a college education, and three of the four have at least one child with a college degree and others following. The gift of a higher education lives on. We wish to pass it on to others. Preference will be given to a female who exhibits need, merit, academic potential, and interest in educating others. The Joyce Groves Scholarship ($1,000) The Joyce Groves Scholarship is in honor of Joyce Groves, a dedicated educator having taught and tutored Spanish on the college level at the University of the District of Columbia and Howard University. She also taught Spanish at Tech World Public Charter School in Washington DC. This need-based scholarship is for a female student with academic potential, who has demonstrated student involvement in community service activities. Preference will be given to a low-income, first generation college student with plans to attend an HBCU. 2 SCHOLARSHIP FOR GRADUATING GED STUDENTS OR NON-TRADITIONAL ADULT LEARNERS The Mary L. Norman Memorial Scholarship ($2,000) The Mary L. Norman Memorial Scholarship is in honor of Mary L. Norman, a mother, friend, and mentor to not only her children, but to many who crossed paths with her. She dedicated her life to leading by example for her children, grandchildren, other family and friends to witness. Despite having left high school prior to graduating to care for an ill family member, she always set her sights on one day returning to complete her formal education. At the age of 58, she started the process of working toward getting her GED and passed all sections except the Math section the first time she took the test. At the age of 62, after struggling with the Math portion over and over again and with the constant encouragement of her children, family and friends, she passed the exam and received her GED as the oldest person to have done so in that program. Preference will be given to an African-American female student returning to school after having been away for a number of years.
