Kedron State High School 2 FEBRUARY No: 1 FROM THE PRINCIPAL WELCOME - To all the members of the Kedron community. Whether you are a new or returning member I welcome you to another exciting year at Kedron. Whether you have travelled from afar or from just up the road to be with us, you can relax and feel welcome at your ‘new home’. Our lines of communication are open and we look forward to conversing with you about many of the great things that happen in our great community. Your school is one that gives learning the highest priority through functioning in an orderly and well-managed environment where there is mutual respect between all persons and respect for all property. BYOD – 2015 has seen the launch of our BYOD program. I know this is a very new initiative for parents and I thank parents for working with the school. If you have questions regarding BYOD, then please contact the school and ask to speak with Jean Heath. I ask for patience as we work through the implementation of this very new and exciting program. CAPITAL WORKS - The summer break has seen the completion of our Junior Secondary building (R Block). This is a fabulous facility for the school with 9 air-conditioned classrooms, staffroom and undercover area. Other areas of the school have also undergone improvement and it is obvious that a great deal of hard work over many years has been put into continually improving the facilities at school. I do not debate the pros and cons of uniform or behaviour – when you join our community you agree to both and we then focus our energies on learning. It is this attention to detail and maintaining the highest standards that allows Kedron to enjoy an enviable reputation in the community. We must ensure we keep this as a priority and we need parents to work with us on these matters. SWIMMING CARNIVAL (THURSDAY 5 FEB) – This is the first whole school activity where we all enjoy the day as participants or spectators. It is a school function and all students are expected to attend. This is the spirit of Kedron where we engage, we don’t pick and choose what we will or will not be involved in. I expect to see all students supporting their house on the day. It is under shade at the Valley Pool. Students are bussed to and from the event. SCHOOL GROWTH - Our school continues to attract students in increasing numbers with our Enrolment Management Plan assisting us to manage that demand. This year we have received the enrolments from both year 7 and 8 students which means our school has grown considerably. We are now over 1450 strong. With this growth we have welcomed many new staff. I know you will join me in making these new staff welcome. SENIOR LEADERS INDUCTION (TUESDAY 10 FEB) – This is a very special event and a strong part of what builds the fantastic culture of our school. Our Year 12’s as leaders (all of them) as well as those who hold specific roles, will be inducted and share their commitment to making 2015 a fantastic year. • • Kathy Bermingham (Guidance Officer / Fulltime) – Fiona Lyon will continue 2 days per week at Kedron SHS Yuki Asano (HOD Languages & International Student Program) – Commencing Week 3 Ashley Harris (HOD Senior Schooling) • • • • • • • • • • David Allman • Lili Li Lisa Bonner • Anna Maloney David Cunningham • Sean Perkins Gerard Dunphy • Ashish Prasad Kelly Keating • Trudi Soan Donna Kleiss • Ryan Wilson Harmony Lau • Meghan Worsley Jake Leslie Hiroshi Matsuo (Returning after 3 years off) Kate Mcloud (Returning after a year off) • WELCOME YEAR 7 & 8 – 2015 is a remarkable moment in history for Queensland schools. The move of Year 7 to high school is exciting and Kedron is more than prepared to meet the challenge and provide an amazing experience for the students. At the same time we wont forget the Year 8 group, who are also starting high school. They are just as special as the Year 7’s and we look forward to working with them in 2015. COMMUNICATION – I finish by reminding everyone that a key factor in highly successful schools is keeping communication lines open. If something is worrying you, then please make the call or send an email and we will get the correct person to speak with you and consider all the options. Yours in the ‘Kedron Way’. Welcome to all Students, Parents and Guardians for 2015. My name is Vanessa Elmore and I will be the Year Eight Coordinator for this year. Students have completed their first week of High School where they have met with their form teachers along with learning about Kedron. Students were issued with vaccination forms that are due the 2nd February. Please ensure that your child returns these forms by this day. Our first event for the year is the Meet and Greet on Tuesday 17th February, afterschool. This will provide you with the opportunity to meet your child’s teachers and ask any questions about the course they are studying. There will be other events as the year progresses with one of the most significant for year eight being their camp, which is on 29th April-1st May, 2015. This will enable students the opportunity to be involved with many new and exciting adventures within their cohort. I look forward to working with your throughout the year. Please contact me with any concerns for queries. JUNIOR SECONDARY Wow! What a great start to the year we have had with 423 new Year 7 and 8 students welcomed into our Kedron community. An extra special welcome to all of our new families joining our community for the first time, you have chosen a great school! Here are some answers to our most common questions at this time of year. Why did my student’s timetable change? We endeavour to give students their first choice in languages but this is not always possible due to class sizes and available teachers. Sometimes when we change one subject it means that we have to change others at the same time. Our teachers have organised lessons around the fact that students will be changing classes – so no one will miss out on critical information as a result of a class or subject change. I wanted my student to do Music and they are doing Art. Can they change? All students in their first year of high school at Kedron SHS will do all three Arts subjects – Music, Art and Drama across the course of the Year. How can I support my student in learning their timetable? It is a great idea to have a spare timetable on the fridge or study area at home. Every night the student needs to check what requirements they need for their subjects the next day. The students do not have every subject every day. This simple routine will lighten the load in the schoolbag. My student is feeling stressed about starting high school. Why are they so tired and cranky? Starting high school is a big deal. All of your student’s routines (and maybe yours too!) have changed. It does take a little while to adapt to the new way of doing things. We have a great time to support your student as they make the transition to high school. HOD - Junior Secondary: Mrs Zoe Wilson Year Level Coordinator ( Year 7): Mr Dave Sharp Year Level Coordinator ( Year 8): Ms Vanessa Elmore Administrative Assistants: Ms Joan Linde and Mr Darren Simmonds Guidance Officers: Ms Kathy Bermingham & Ms Fiona Lyon You will have the opportunity to meet your student’s teachers and support team at our Meet and Greet events. Our Meet and Greet is a great opportunity for you to not only meet your student’s teachers but to also meet other families and your student’s new friends. Further details will be sent home shortly but the dates to lock into your calendar are: Year 7: February 11 starting at 5:00pm Year 8: February 17 starting at 5:00pm KOGS The Kedron Order of Gamers (KOGS) has been in existence for over ten years. It’s designed for students who are interested in Warhammer, Magic or Wargaming. Students can bring their own armies. There is also access to armies so students can play Ancient, Medieval or World War 2 battles as well as other historical periods. Students in Year 7 or 8 can speak to their Year Co-ordinator students who can contact the responsible teacher Mr. Booker-McLay (B4 staffroom) so he can speak to the students at Lunchtime. This group meets usually every second Friday from 3-5PM. The first will be Friday 6 February in room L7. 8 December 2014 JUNIOR SPORT 2015 Welcome to Junior Sport for 2015. This year is a new era for junior sport with the year 7’s coming on board. The structure sees us having Year 8 and 9 participation in interschool sport on Tuesday period 4 and the Year 7’s participate in interhouse sport on Friday period 4. This allows all students to get maximum participation and enjoyment out of Sport. The inclusion of the year 7’s in high school has now seen us become involved in two districts for representation at Met North level. As normal our 13 year olds and up are affiliated with Central District and Met North for all sports while our 12 year olds will only be with Central District for the three big carnivals (Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics). For all other sports 12 year olds will be aligned with the City district which involves some high schools as well as primary schools. This allows full and fair pathways for these students to represent at the next level. Dates and venues for these trials will be place on the HPE notice board so students can regularly check when these are on and forms will be available from the HPE staffroom. Some of these trials will be half day during school time and some will be afterschool. Upcoming trails for this term are as follows: 16th Feb – Basketball (Boys and Girls) – Afterschool 26th Feb – Tennis (Boys and Girls) – Half Day 27th Feb – AFL (Boys) & Hockey (Boys and Girls) – Half Day 6th Mar – Rugby League and Netball – Half Day 13th Mar – Soccer and Touch (Boys and Girls) – Half Day Please see Mr Tucker for all trial information and paperwork Afterschool Sport Kedron has many opportunities for students to participate and be involved in Sport not only competitively but also socially. One such opportunity is afterschool sport where the emphasis is placed on participation, fun and making new friends. The following sports are for all year levels and for both boys and girls and run from 3pm to 4pm in the Indoor Sports Centre (ISC) or out on the playing fields. Tuesday – Touch (fields) and Badminton (ISC) Wednesday – Futsal (ISC) Thursday – Volleyball (ISC) Friday – Basketball (ISC) Please see Mr Tucker or Mr Blanshard in the HPE staffroom if you have any questions 4. All students NEW to Kedron High in ANY year level These students do NOT have a current login, so the process takes longer. 1. Purchase your laptop 2. Wait to be notified or your login credentials (login code and password) 3. At school, log on to a desktop computer (try the library) and log on for the first time to set up your school account properly and to change your password. (Year 7 and 8 students may have an in-class opportunity to do this during Week 3). 4. On your own device, set up antivirus and Office 365 (you need your login code to do this). 5. When done, complete the Device Connectivity Request and take your $100 payment to the Accounts window. 6. Students will be notified when to bring their device to school for connection. This may happen from the start of week 3 onwards. GENERAL REMINDERS • Information booklets about BYOD are available from the main office. • The Connectivity Request Form is contained in the Information booklet. • Students should check their school email and the student intranet every day to check for notices and announcements. • • BYOD-LATEST NEWS AND INFORMATION Welcome to the start of the BYOD program for students Kedron High. Here’s the process that will be undertaken over the next few weeks. This process is slightly different depending on your circumstances, so read below to find out what YOU should do and when it should happen. Current students in Years 9 and 10, and those in Years 11 and 12 opting for BYOD These students already have a login, so the process is a little faster. 1. Purchase your laptop and set up antivirus and Office 365 (you need your login code to do this). 2. When done, complete the Device Connectivity Request and take your $100 payment to the Accounts window. 3. Students will be notified when to bring their device to school for connection. This should happen from the start of week 2. In the meantime, students should log on to a computer at school to check their password is up-to-date. Students in Year 11 or 12 who are opting in to the BYOD program should ensure they return their school laptop to the techs when the connection is made. • Students should manage their email accounts to ensure there is plenty of room for important communications from the admin team. This means: o Delete emails that have been read and are no longer required. o Empty the Trash folder (right click on the folder and choose the option to clear it). Students may not use a laptop at school that has not been connected through the approved method. Students devices will receive a sticker that is to remain in place to indicate proper connection to the school network. From week 3, no computing device is to be used in the grounds during breaks or before school. o This is an implementation of current policy. o This helps preserve battery life to enable guaranteed battery during afternoon lessons. o This helps prevent damage to student devices. o Devices will be able to be used in designated areas for school purposes. The school’s web page has a link to the BYOD program that gives all the information required. https://kedronshs.eq.edu.au/Facilities/Computersandtechn ology/Pages/Computersandtechnology.aspx or just find the link to the BYOD page that is on the Home page of the website. 8 December 2014 STUDENT COUNCIL AGM The Student Representative Council (Year 9-12) will have their Annual General Meeting on Friday (6/2) to elect the Secretary and Treasurer and discuss Valentine’s Day fundraising. Valentine’s Day is usually a memorable event for students as they have an opportunity to have a Valentine’s Day balloon, message and treat delivered during form class. Our 2015 President is Josh Petrie with Abi Smith-Steen the VicePresident. All students in Years 9-12 may attend the AGM. REPRESENTATIVE SPORT – METROPOLITAN NORTH REGION Kedron SHS is placed in the Metropolitan North region for representative sport. All athletes that are looking to gain state and higher representative sporting honours with Kedron SHS must go via this pathway. The vast majority of sports have their representative trials in Term 1 and Term 2 and students must make sure they are aware of upcoming trial dates. This information can be found on the Met North website (www.metnorthsport.qld.edu.au). Alternatively students can refer to the sports noticeboard that is in the hallway outside the HPE department. To be eligible for trial students need to see Mr Blanshard (Sports Coordinator) to obtain the necessary paperwork. If students have any questions about the process they are encouraged to see Mr Blanshard for further information. On Tuesday 10th February (Week 3) the Central District trials will take place for the following sports: 15 years and under Volleyball (boys and girls), 19 years and under Volleyball (boys and girls) and 19 years and under Softball (girls). The first series of Met North trials will take place on Tuesday 17th February (Week 4) for those sports previously mentioned, as well as 19 years and under Tennis (boys and girls), 18 years and under Baseball (boys) and 19 years and under Cricket (boys). Any students who are interested in attending these trials please see Mr Blanshard. 57TH ANNUAL KEDRON SHS SWIMMING CARNIVAL We start our sporting year off with the school swimming carnival. This will be held at the Fortitude Valley Swimming Pool on Thursday, the 5th of February. Students will come to school at the normal time. They will then be transported by bus from school to the Valley Pool. They will be brought back at the end of the day for a 3pm finish. We encourage all students to come along and participate through competitive swimming, swimming one lap for their house in the Mad Minute or by cheering on their peers. Wickham House are the defending champions and will rely on House Captains Tim Vincent and Jennifer Turner to marshal their forces to hold off Bowen and the others. While there are covered stands at the pool as well as a tuckshop we recommend that students bring food, drink and sunscreen to make sure they have an enjoyable day. Students who finish in the top two of their event will be invited to be part of the Kedron SHS Swim Team that will contest the Central District Swimming Carnival on Tuesday the 17th of February. YEAR 10 COORDINATOR- WELCOME BACK I hope everyone had a great holiday and is excited to be back at school. I personally am excited to be back and am looking forward to working with the year 10’s this year. The year 10’s will have many exciting opportunities this year including the Careers Expo, Work Experience Week and Set Plans. If your child is not excited about being back at school, ask them why. Perhaps they need to change subjects, look at traineeships or change friendship groups. If you have any problems finding a solution please contact me and I will help out where possible or direct you to someone who can. This year we also welcome Mr Lang as the HOD of Middle School who will make a great contribution to the Middle School team. I am looking forward to meeting with all students in the grade with Mr Lang and Mrs Hall to have a friendly chat, review last year and offer support. Some key points discussed with year 10’s at their welcome back assembly were: • Subject changes must be done by the end of week 2. Students require a note from home to approve changes which they then take to the Middle School. • The Leader’s Investiture will be week 6, therefore students have limited time to demonstrate to their peers and staff that they have leadership qualities. • The network for BYOD should be ready next week. Until then students do not require laptops at school. In the meantime students should pay their money to accounts and have their acceptable use policy signed. Students are also not allowed to be using laptops in the playground during breaks. • Please ensure all parts of your uniform are marked so lost property can be returned. Each year we have large numbers of uniforms which can’t be returned as they have not been named. • Interschool sport is now on Wednesday for year 10’s and this is their new day to wear their sports uniform. • Phones and technology devices are not to be used at school. Students doing so will have it confiscated, on the 3rd time their parent/guardian will need to collect it. Wishing you all a great 2015 and please contact me if I can be of any assistance. Mr Crosby Year 10 Coordinator [email protected] 8 December 2014 YEAR 9 CO-ORDINATOR While Year 8 was great, this year the 9s are going to shine! Yes, a little corny I know, but it’s wonderful watching these students developing the qualities embodied by the Kedron Way, taking pride in themselves, their school, behaviour and uniform, and respecting others. These are all traits we look for in our student leaders and investiture will take place in Week 6. I am encouraging all students to take some time to reflect on their leadership skills as well as those of their peers in deciding who to nominate for these positions. We certainly have no shortage of students in this cohort with the skills and abilities necessary to lead their peers positively. I regularly send out emails to parents and carers but this week had quite a few returned as undeliverable. If you have changed your email address since last year, could you please ask your child to see me so that I can update our records or, alternatively, email me at the address below. Please contact me via email ([email protected]) or phone if you have any concerns or queries. I look forward to a brilliant year! Ms Jodrell Year 9 co-ordinator Ph: 3630 3305 BUDDIES On Wednesday last week the Year 7s and Year 8s met their Senior Buddies for the first time. This program is designed to assist our new students settle in and feel comfortable in their new school. Buddies meet regularly for this first month and then as regularly as the Junior Secondary students need. All Year 7 & 8 students should have a Buddy Information sheet which gives some information about their buddy – name, where they can usually be found at breaks etc. I hope our Junior Secondary students have shared this with their parents. Our Year 11 & 12 Senior Buddies should feel justifiably pleased with their efforts as Senior buddies. The atmosphere on Wednesday was warm and welcoming and we were very proud of our Senior School students. SCHOOL PHOTOS & ID PHOTOS School photos will be taken this week. Year 7 students will have photos taken on Wednesday 4th February, in Period 1 and Years 8 – 12 photos will be done on Friday 6th February. STUDENTS MUST BE IN FORMAL UNIFORM FOR THE PHOTOS. The photo taken on these days will also be used for student ID cards. Parents, you should expect the order envelope to come home with your child.
