decided to stay on it for a while instead of leaving it
for the Pond Loop. I walked to just below that trail’s
junction with the Hinkley Trail before turning back
toward the pond.
Once back at the water’s edge, I followed the Pond
Loop around the narrow western end of the little
lake. There was just enough snow to make a lovely
winter scene, and the frozen pond itself was under
an unbroken white blanket. I noticed signs for some
of the remote sites that are part of the new Gilson
Pond camping area. Just beyond that, the view of
the water from the bridge over the pond’s outlet was
beautiful. From there it was only a short walk back
to the parking area.

The development of the Gilson Pond section of
& Gaitors 3TARTINGAT Monadnock State Park was certainly a good idea,
and so was the extension of the Hinkley Trail to the
Birchcroft Trail. I wish there was a way to extend
that trail even more – to the north. In fact, I think it
would be great to have a trail that circled the entire
mountain at the level of the Hinkley Trail and the
Entrance
Parker Trail, which leads from the headquarters area
to the Old Toll Road section of the park. A trail like
