Having Signage Trouble?
Use the power of magnetism to solve your problems.
Instead of using pins or
some other method of
affixing images to your
sign board.
You can now use paperthin magnets that can be
printed on the same as
paper.
You first put a thin
magnetic sheet onto
your signboard.
Simply peel off the back
of the magnetic sheet.
And then stick the
magnetic sheet onto
your signboard.
Apply the paper-thin
magnet to the magnetic
sheet. In this case we’re
applying a template.
This template can stay
on the signboard all the
time.
We then place another
magnet with our special
promotion information
on top of our template.
This magnet can be
removed easily and
replaced.
You can change the
magnets as many times
as you want in a few
seconds.
This system is simple,
easy to use and very
inexpensive.
Use this system on any surface — walls, windows, glass doors — and at any size you want.

There may also be plans
for a sports viewing room although that is not confirmed
at this point and the upper
outdoor level of the building
may play host to a hot tub for
open air frolicking. More details will be forthcoming soon
as the new place, as yet unnamed tries to open its doors
in March.
The Aetas Hotel on Soi
Ruam Rudee, seen below, is
going to be drastically changing its appearance some time
It looks there’s going to
be another food and drink
destination on Soi 4 in the
next couple of months as the
former Finnegan’s Pub (see

will be transformed into a
slightly more upscale bar and
restaurant serving American
food and classic rock music
along with a bevy of lovely
hostesses.
soon. How drastic?
Well, how about
knocking the top
16 floors off of this
24-floor structure?
Why would they
do that? Because a
court order, reached
after a few years of
litigation and deliberation, has ordered
them to do so.
Seems that when they
were in the planning stages
of construction, some city
officials were “persuaded”
to overlook a key provision
in the law that allows for
only eight-story buildings on
streets that are a
certain width. Local residents complained and eventually prevailed in
court, resulting in
the recent decision by the court.
We’re wondering,
just how in the hell
do you knock 16 floors off of
a building? And when you do,
can you make money with
only eight floors of rooms
left? Should be interesting to
watch if nothing else.

the Prime 11 condo building
in Soi 11 across from Oskar.
It follows in the ill-fated footsteps of Angel City Diner and
the tapas restaurant Catalan
before the diner. Both were
failures so the group that continues to try to make money
here may actually do so this
time although its other Coyote outlets failed in other
Bangkok locations. At least
there are contractors making
money.
The photo at the top of the
page shows the new facade
of the Yoka Yoka Japanese
restaurant in Ruam Rudee
Village which used
to house the longtime Circle restaurant where we
first ate in 1996.
According to plans,
a new incarnation
of Circle will be on
the third floor of
the building while Japanese
cuisine is served on the first
two floors.
Below left is a view of the
Circle 11 condo being built
across the street from the
new Citrus Hotel (see photos
at bottom). This
place is going up
at an incredible
rate as opposed
to so many projects we’ve seen
over the years
here. They must
be ready to top off
the building very
soon. It could open
in a year or less the
way they’re going.
And the Citrus
Hotel opened on
February 1. We haven’t been
inside yet but its boutique
concept looks somewhat interesting and we’ll be checking out its amenities soon.
And other new places that
are opening soon include two
restaurants on Soi 8. Raya is
a large seafood place that’s a
branch of the very successful
Phuket location located on the
old Le Banyan plot of land and
Little Italy is a vegetarian
Italian place with indoor
and outdoor seating about

Yes folks, that time of year
is here again —the time to
show our significant others
just how much we love them.
We’re not exactly sure why
St. Valentine is the patron
saint of love and we were too
lazy to look it up so we can’t
enlighten you on this point
but suffice it to say that the
modern version of Valentine’s
Day probably bears little resemblance to the original
celebration, whatever it may
have consisted of, and we are
now expected to spend lots of
money on gifts and dinners to
reaffirm our tender affections.
So, with that in mind, here
is all of the information we
could find in regard to suitable places to celebrate your
Valentine’s Day with your
loved one in the Sukhumvit
area. Please enjoy your evening whatever it may involve
doing.
We’ll start, since this listing is no particular order, with
the Amari Boulevard’s Season
Thai Terrace restaurant which
is presenting a Valentine set
menu starting with a tartare
of chunk crabmeat wrapped
with Scottish smoked salmon
accompanied by green asparagus jelly; roasted tomato
consommé with dry gin and
shrimp mousse dumpling;
pink guava sherbet on honey
and lemon smoothie; baked
rock lobster tails with red
wine Hollandaise sauce and
braised spinach with leek and
deep-fried saffron risotto.
Or marinated grilled Australian lamb chops and duck
foie gras with fine herbs sauce
and mixed berries; braised

February, 2015
RUMORS, LIES & GOSSIP...
More rumblings are going on in regard to the future of certain plots of land
in the area, as usual. The
latest concerns the huge
plot across from the new Q
House project on the corner of Soi 6. Apparently, this
land has been up for sale for
some time but the stumbling
block that’s been keeping a
deal from happening is the
fact that this plot, which has
been empty forever, also includes the Baptist church
at the rear of the property.
Trying to come to some sort
of accommodation with the
church has been an ongoing process, according to our
very well-placed source, but
when and if this happens
then look for a project to be
announced some time since
this is a highly valuable piece
of property and something
will be going up here.
The aforementioned Q
House project which is already under construction is
going to be a 42-story condo
with selling prices of between 350-400,000 baht per
square meter which is about
the same as some of the most
expensive pieces of property
in Manhattan. Of course, the
selling price of that land was
the highest ever recorded in
Thailand at about 1.8 million
baht per square wah (four
square meters) so the condos ain’t gonna be cheap.
We also learned recently
that the land and buildings
adjacent to Soi 14 that are
scheduled to be developed
also include all of the property that stretches to the corner of Asoke Road making it
a pretty sizable piece of land.
This will make it a very big
project, what ever it eventually becomes. Our guess is a
hotel but that’s only a guess
at this point.
And apparently the owner at Hemingway’s, the large
restaurant on Soi 14 that is
included in that plot is none
too happy with the situation
since he spent a king’s ran-
www.sukhumvitscene.com
som over an 18-month renovation period and now is supposed to vacate the premises
around the end of March.
considering the amount of
money that was spent, two
years of operations has certainly not been enough time
to even begin to recoup the
total investment in the project.
We hear that legal action
against the land owner is being explored but the chances
of that being successful are
probably nil at best. Live and
learn.
One of the major reasons
being cited for the relative
lack of tourists visiting the
Land of Smiles lately has
been the fact of political uncertainty and the fact that
the country is under martial law. One thing that the
TAT and other organizations
seem to turn a blind eye to is
the fact that there continues
to be an inordinate amount
of negative publicity internationally about things that
go on here that are scaring
people away.
These are not inconsequential things, either. The
recent taxi problems at Suvarnabhumi are a prime example as well as the dead
bodies that keep turning up
on Death Island (Koh Tao). As
we write this, another backpacker’s body has just been
discovered there, this time
an attractive young female
British tourist. Troublesome
taxi drivers are one thing but
dead people are another. We
can’t help wondering what
the hell is going on down
there.
By the time you read this
we’ll know what kind of repercussions this latest death
will have caused in the international press but we all
know it’s going to be another
nightmare, especially since
the September murders
haven’t been resolved in a
satisfactory way yet. All we
can say is this is definitely

Sukhumvit Restaurants
Maya’s High Rise Act
Delivers On All Fronts
There are both Indian restaurants in the area as well
as view restaurants — some
outdoors, some in — and in
good numbers, but the Holiday Inn’s Maya restaurant
combines both concepts and
does a great
job of it.
While viewing the lights
of the city you
can also dine
on high end
Indian cuisine
as well as listen to carefully
presented music as the night
goes on.
A
recent
visit to this
18-month old
venue left us satisfied from
a culinary standpoint and
suitably impressed with the
overall concept that the restaurant is presenting to its
well-heeled clientele.
The decor is definitely
upscale with an overall motif
that suggests both opulence
and contemporary style.
The space is
divided
into
several areas,
some
with
a view, others without,
that provides
diners with a
choice of ambience while
they enjoy the
meticulously
prepared food
of Indian chef
Hardip Bhatia.
There’s also
an elegant private room that
can accommodate a bout a
dozen guests for special occasions.
The glass-walled kitchen
provides a peek at the behind the scene action here
when you first enter the
space and shows off the large
copper cooking vessels that
contribute to the flavors of
the food. Chef Hardip, when
questioned about the unique
flavor of the black dal (which
is very difficult to stop eating)
that the non-reactivity of copper provides a slightly different taste.
Whatever the reason, the
www.sukhumvitscene.com
food was uniformly delicious
and in the case of certain
dishes like the saag (spinach)
entree we sampled — along
with the lamb and chicken
murgh tikka, along with the
dal — we only wanted more.
As the night goes on and
the music kicks in, this interesting and innovative restaurant becomes even more
alive and offers diners a great
combination of its two major
strengths: great food and an
atmosphere, including the
view, that enhances the dining experience.

Sabroso Is Sukhumvit’s Latest Mexican Find
Sabroso, on Soi 23, is the
newest Mexican restraurant
in the are and ranks up there
with any of the best you’re going to find in Sukhumvit. Coowner Jorge started the original Tacos & Salsa locatged on
Soi 18 and along with partner
Emma has created a cozy little taqueria-style eatery that
serves up authentic flavors
and just plain good
tasting food.
Aftere
living
in Los Angeles for
six years and eating from th etaco

we developed an
affinity for simple home-style
tacos and Sabroso manages
to capture the essence of these

Dining In The Dark
Bruce Springsteen wrote
many years ago about dancing in the dark but now in
Sukhumvit you can dine in
the dark. Simply go to the
Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit’s Barsu gastro lounge and
you’ll be able to experience
what has to be one of the
strangest dining experiences
we’ve ever encountered in
our long history of restaurant reviewing.
It’s strange in a good
way, however, and when we
say dark we mean DARK. You
can’t bring anything inside
the dining room that could
emit even a whisper of light
and that includes mobile
phones and watches with luminescent dials.
So when you get into the
room, after being guided
into it by your guide who is
incapable of seeing (they’re
literally blind) it’s a someFebruary, 2015
what unsettling experience at
first. But after you’re seated
and you gradually become
acclimated to the total darkness and feel around gingerly
in front of you to find your
cutlery, water glass, bread
basket, etc., you begin to feel
comfortable.
And our guide, Khun Moe,
who stayed with us for the
evening, talked to us whenever she was bringing food
or drinks or clearing plates.
Her voice became a comforting presence and her ability to
locate everything on the table
and to place the plates and
glasses easily was somewhat
uncanny but a lifetime of living in the dark must make
things a lot easier.
We would hope that anyone who visits this unusual
room leaves a healthy tip for
their guide in addition to the
service charge on the bill since
fried pork bits that are loved
in LA. The spicy shrimp tacos
pictured below left and chorizo and cheese variety above
are also great exampless of simple mexican
cuisine and the tortilla
soup to the left is one
of the best we’vew
had in Bangkok.
It’s not all tacos
here as the menu
also contains more
than tacos including
grilled steaks, a chicken breast dish, fajitas,
burritos and chimichangas
along with some startes and
desserts.
We’d be happy to eat tacos
any time we come here, however, and so will you.
Sabroso, Soi 23, 090-123-8379.
what these people do, in
spite of their circumstances,
is quite remarkable.
As for the food, there
are four different set menus
that you can choose from
— western, Asian, vegetarian and a surprise menu.
We had fun guessing what
each course was and upon
leaving the restaurant found
that we were mostly correct
except for the main meat
course which turned out to
be beef cheeks and not osso
bucco or lamb shank as we
thought.
We found out what we
were served after we went
back out into the main
room of the club where the
maitre‘d, a great guy named
Jai, showed us pictures of
the food on an iPad.
This is a very unusual dining experience but it’s also
fun and intimate and eyeopening in its own way.

Okura’s Up & Above
Goes To The Next Level
This short article will not
do justice to the Okura Prestige Hotel’s Up & Above restaurant, one of three quality
food and beverage outlets in
this five-star hotel, but it will
give you an idea, at least,
of the type of quality that is
available here in the Sukhumvit area on a regular basis.
Located just off the Ploenchit BTS station (and therefore on the eastern frontier of
our self-proclaimed Sukhumvit world) the Okura is a luxury hotel that offers some topnotch dining. Our recent visit
to the all-day Up &
Above restaurant —
with its magnificent
views which you can
glimpse in the photo
at right — provided
us with a glimpse of
the overall approach
here.
Our meal consisted of one of the new
“combonation” dinner menus
(pictured left) being offered
at the restaurant that are set
menus at three different price
levels for different numbers
www.sukhumvitscene.com
of guests. The restaurant was
accommodating enough to
provide us this menu at lunch
time as well, so we were able
to sample some of the buffet
items offered then. There’s
also a Sunday brunch here
and the overall theme at any
of these offerings is quality
food matched with great service.
The Okura Prestige is offering discriminating diners an
attractive alternative to the
many area restaurants that
pay lip service to real quality
and value that a top restaurant could and should be offering its guests.

place on Soi 14 that’s been there
for 50 years, literally. It’s been
our favorite place for Thai food
for about 17 years now and the
menu is filled with stuff we like
and at very good prices. The
crab curry is also one of our
favorites as well as many more.
Below is the pumpkin soup with
a grilled shrimp from Cellar 11

wine bar/restaurant. The menu
here is international an there’s a
great value Sunday brunch with
lobster and steaks included.
Above are the barbecued ribs
at American Bar & Grill on

popular menu items and are
moist and juicy and almost
falling off the bone as well as
being big. And on Sundays
you can eat all you want for
595 baht.Below is the gnocchi in tomato sauce from La

fresh ingredients.
Above is the black paella
served at a brand new place
on Soi 23, Gaudi Barcelona

didn’t ask but assume that the

a good deal. Below are some
of the deep-fried seafood
items you can get at Snapper

specialty here is fried seafood
from New Zealand as well as
steaks and other New Zealand
delicacies.
