WELCOME BACK
Welcome to a new era in schooling as Queensland Primary Schools move to Prep to
Year 6. I have every confidence in our Year 6 students and look forward to seeing
them evolve as our School Leaders in 2015. A warm welcome to new and continuing
families. CSS is truly a community school and no doubt strong school and community
relationships will remain a feature of this school. Welcome to new staff. We are
joined by Theresa Blumel, Marilyn Potter, Monique Comino, Tricia Jeffs and Kathy
O’Gorman. Each of these professionals brings with them passion, expertise and new
and different ways of thinking. I have every faith that they will add to the richness of
our school community. Most importantly, welcome to the 151 students who have
joined our school community. CSS is a great school and I hope that you grow to love
it just as much as our staff do. Let’s launch into another great year at Coorparoo
State School.

areas of turf required replacement and this has resulted in partial opening of the new
surface. The surface will be progressively opened as the turf knits. We will continue
to provide supervised access to the bottom oval (Carey Field) for early years
students.

From the Deputy Principal
John Kennedy, Deputy Principal, [email protected]
Welcome to 2015 everyone.
Our school year starts with many new families joining us and to them a very warm
welcome. We also have some returning families and a number of new faces in our staff
team and my best wishes to all of you for a wonderful year ahead.
For Week 1 ONLY Prep will
conclude at 12:00pm with
Parent / Teacher
interviews between
1:00pm – 4:00pm.
Normal school attendance
will commence from
Week 2 from 8:45am –
2:55pm
At Coorparoo State School, all parents, students and teachers remain committed to
providing a safe environment in and around our school—to make sure that students can
travel to and from school in the safest possible way and your support is very much
appreciated particularly at the Stop, Drop & Go Zones and School Crossings.
To make sure that drop off and pick up times at school are as orderly and as safe as
possible please ensure the correct use of the Two Minute Zone in Halstead Street Stop,
Drop and Go is observed. Drivers MUST remain with their cars and MUST leave this area
after two minutes regardless of whether a pick-up has occurred or not.
Parents, for the safety of our young people and the smooth operation of our Stop, Drop
and Go Zone, please remember this is a No Parking area and the parking spaces
adjacent to the pool and tennis courts are timed zones only.
SOAR – Be Safe, Be Organised, Be an Active Learner, Be Responsible
Page 2 of 10
Please do not park in the No Standing zones outside the school gates or enter and park in the school grounds/staff parking areas
and please observe the 40km speed limit in the school zone.
Please also note that our School Crossings located on Halstead and Leicester Streets are manned in the morning and afternoon
by a School Crossing Supervisor.
Students must wait behind the yellow line for the Crossing Supervisor to stop traffic and blow their whistle to indicate it is safe to
cross before stepping out onto the crossing.
Drivers must be aware that it is illegal to drive through the crossing until the Crossing Supervisor has returned to the footpath
and no cars should attempt to park within 20 metres of the crossing signage.
Have a safe year.
From the Deputy Principal
Mark Craswell, Deputy Principal, [email protected]
Welcome to 2015!
A warm welcome is extended to all families, whether returning for yet another year, or ready to experience their first year at our
school. To our new families, I am certain you will be amazed at the number of exciting events which will unfold before you in the
coming year, and years to follow. As Deputy Principal (Prep-2), I am here to assist parents and students in the journey through
the beginning years at Coorparoo State School. You will see me out and about, before and after school each day. Appointments
to meet with me can be made by emailing me at [email protected]. I look forward to getting to know our new families and
reigniting relationships with our many families from 2014.
From the Head of Curriculum
Helen Bristow, HOC, [email protected]
Welcome back to the new school year. Thank you to parents, care-givers, teachers, students, administration staff, cleaners,
groundsman and support staff for your preparation for the first day back. Although Coorparoo is a large school, it has a small
school family feel as demonstrated by the many smiling people who greeted me today eager to chat about the holidays and ask
about mine. Teachers have been working tirelessly over the last week not only to ensure classrooms are inviting and organised,
but also to attend professional development days and to plan the year with their year level teams.
I feel very fortunate to be working in a school community that embraces change, challenges and supports teaching and learning.
This year our teachers will continue to plan, teach, assess, moderate and report on the Australian Curriculum which ‘focuses on
learning area content and achievement standards that describe what students will learn and teachers will teach.’
http://www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/curriculum/overview
Structured moderation meetings to view student work samples and assessment tasks are conducted regularly by teaching teams
to achieve consistency. Formal reports go home in Term 2 and Term 4. Interviews to see teachers at other times of the year can
be made by contacting the classroom teacher.
From the Literacy & Numeracy Coach
Iris Van Sloten, [email protected]
Firstly, welcome back to Coorparoo State School. I hope you and your family had a relaxing break and spent quality family time
together. I hope you’re as excited to be starting the New Year as I am. It is always a joy to see the students eager to commence
their new learning and excited about new classmates and teachers.
This year I will be taking on the role of Literacy and Numeracy Coach where I will be providing teachers with one-on-one coaching
and support. Yvana Jones has helped establish and support our Coorparoo Reading Community and I will also be supporting
teachers implementing this in classrooms through High Impact Teaching, building writing skills and developing problem solving
skills.
However, I am excited to continue working with students in extracurricular clubs including the Wilkes Green Garden Club, The
Green Team and the Senior Recorder group.

SWIMMING LESSONS TERM 1
Swimming lessons will commence in Week 2. Please ensure students have togs, sun
shirt swimming cap, towel and goggles for their lesson. In order to reduce lost property,
we ask you to label ALL items of clothing.
Classroom teachers will be recruiting parent helpers to assist with swimming lessons. In
order for swimming lessons to be a safe and productive experience, we encourage
parents to bring their swim gear and be willing to go in the pool if needed. Assisting
with swimming lessons is a great way to contribute to the school community. Not only
is it a great feeling to see your child participating in swimming lessons, it might just be
an opportunity to help another child become confident and safe in the water!
CLASS SWIMMING IN-SERVICE FOR PARENTS
If you would like to know more about helping with class swimming lessons and what
this involves, please come along to an information session on Friday 6 February at
2.30pm. This session will be held at the swimming pool. Please email Megan if you will
be attending this session ([email protected]).
DISTRICT AND REGIONAL SPORTS REPRESENTATION
At Coorparoo, we offer our students every possible opportunity to take the ‘next step’
in terms of District and Regional representation. Coorparoo is one of 30+ schools that
make up the Lytton District. This term we will hold in-school trials to identify students to
send to Lytton Trials. If students are successful in gaining selection in a Lytton team,
they will then compete to make it into our Regional side (Met East). Selection in a Met
East side will mean students have the opportunity to compete in State Championships
and potentially make a State team. In 2014, Coorparoo had many students representing
Lytton and Met East and three of our students even made State teams!
Students born in 2005, 2004 and 2003 are eligible to attend in-school trials. It is highly
important that students attend in-school trials on the dates and times specified in
Newsletters. If students are absent due to illness on the day of in-school trials, they
must bring a note to Miss Carpenter or Mrs Godson, in order to still be considered.
Selection in Lytton teams is highly competitive, so there is an expectation that if
students are coming to an in-school trial, they have had/are having experience playing
the sport they are trialling for.

MUSIC NEWS
Annelle Vogler, Music Teacher, [email protected]
Welcome to 2015. This year will no doubt be as busy as last year, so let’s get started!
STRINGS 2015
This year Strings lessons and Orchestra will be on Wednesdays. Lessons will commence in Week 2 (February 4) and Orchestra
will commence in Week 3 (February 11). Please note that the Beginner Strings (Year 3) will not be participating in Orchestra until
Term 4.
INSTRUMENTAL BAND
Instrumental lessons will commence in Week 2 on Mondays and Tuesdays. Mr Arnow will inform you of the exact details in
Week 1, so please wait for an information letter to come home.
PAYMENT OF LEVIES
All Instrumental students should have received an ‘Instrumental Music Levy 2015’ note by now. The levy must be paid by Friday
30 January to the Music Sub-Committee. If your child is hiring a school instrument for the year, he/she will not be allowed to
take that instrument home until the levy is paid, so please ensure swift payment, to stop the flow of tears!
All Instrumental students should have the gear required to start playing an instrument in Week 2 eg instructional book, music
stand, reeds, valve oil, rosin etc. If you have not purchased these accessories by now, please buy them this week so your child
can start the lessons in Week 2, fully prepared. If you do not know what is required, please ask Ms Flemming (Strings) or Mr
Arnow (Band).
CHOIRS
I am looking for an accompanist for the Senior Choir this year. Is there anybody out there who would like to accompany the
Senior Choir on Thursday mornings from 8am – 8:45am? Please send an email to Annelle Vogler if you are interested
[email protected]
This year a Boys Choir will be established. This will be open to any boys from Years 4, 5 and 6 who pass an audition. An audition
will be required, as only 20 boys will be selected to participate in this very special choir. Also, the boys will have to give up a

lunch break to participate in this choir. More details about this choir and the audition process will follow in the next couple of
weeks.
A note will be going out in the next week or so, inviting any children who would like to join choir from Years 1-6. We will have
the same three choirs as last year – Kijini Choir (Years 1 and 2), Junior Choir (Years 3 and 4) and the Senior Choir (Years 5 and 6).
RECORDER ENSEMBLE
Ms Van Sloten would like to run a Recorder Ensemble this year for Years 4, 5 and 6 students on Tuesdays at lunch time. More
