#62 All Creatures of Our God and King ~ LASST UNS ERFREUEN
Affirmation of Faith
We believe in God the Father, infinite in wisdom, power, and love,
whose mercy is over all his works, and whose will is ever directed to
his children’s good. We believe in Jesus Christ, Son of God and Son of
man, the gift of the Father’s unfailing grace, the ground of our hope,
and the promise of our deliverance from sin and death. We believe in
the Holy Spirit as the divine presence in our lives, whereby we are kept
in perpetual remembrance of the truth of Christ, and find strength and
help in time of need. We believe that this faith should manifest itself
in the service of love as set forth in the example of our blessed Lord,
to the end that the kingdom of God may come upon the earth. Amen.
Gloria Patri
#71 Glory Be to the Father ~ GREATOREX
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it

Offertory
Lover of Souls ~ Johann Sebastian Bach
Lover of souls, my Heavenly Treasure, I am content, and fear no
harm; happy am I beyond all measure, ever within Thy loving arms,
from out of the pit of sadness lifted, rising I find the darkness rifted,
scattered by love so rich and free. Earth now becomes the gate of
heaven. Who would not joyful be when given infinite happiness in
Thee? Lover of souls, how well contented, peaceful and carefree is
my soul! No more by mortal ills tormented, Thy sacrifice has made
me whole. Through Thine almighty grace and merit I have serenity
of spirit, soothing life's pathway where I roam. Vain world, away!
No more distress me! Jesus' enfolding arms will press me bearing my
spirit safely home. †
Doxology
#95 Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow ~ OLD 100th
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures
here below; praise God above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son,
and Holy Ghost. Amen.
Prayer of Dedication
O God, bless these gifts that they may be used to glorify your kingdom
as your love and light are shared not only in our community, but
throughout the world. We cast our crowns before Thee, lost in
wonder, love, and praise! Amen.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Update: Year-End 2014
In early December, Danny Newcomb (Finance Chair) and I spoke at all four Sunday
morning services and shared that an additional $684,000 in gifts were needed to reach
our budget for contributions in 2014. I had my doubts it could be done but was told
that the people of Centenary would step up and make it happen. They did. We received
an additional $670,000 during that three-week period before year-end and actually
received additional pledged gifts, which exceeded our budgeted expectations for pledges.
We are blessed and extremely grateful to those of you who quickly responded to the
need and fulfilled your pledge to the church.
In addition, we had budgeted for a $72,000 surplus that would allow us to pay down
some of the debt from previous years. Thankfully, there were several areas where
we saw additional savings during 2014. They include but are not limited to Respite
Care, Facilities Management, Children’s Ministry, Business Administration, and Youth
Ministry. With these savings, we have ended the year with enough of a surplus to pay
down $100,000 of our existing debt.
If you have not made your pledge to Centenary for 2015, I urge you to do so now. You
are always welcome to contact me (724-6311)/[email protected] if you’d like
to discuss your pledge. Our 2015 budget is expected to be approved this week and
every gift of any size is truly appreciated.
This year will be an exciting time in the life of Centenary and I look forward to being a
part of it along with each of you.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
CELEBRATIONS AND CONCERNS
OVERFLOW SHELTER
The chancel flowers are given in loving memory
of Sally DeRamus, Judson and Tom DeRamus,
Elizabeth and Joe Edmondson, and Margaret and
Brady Trull by the DeRamus family.
Centenary is working with churches all across
Winston-Salem to provide an overflow shelter for
our homeless neighbors during the cold winter
months. As our local shelters fill up and it becomes
dangerously cold to sleep outside, our goal is to
provide a warm and safe place for people to come and
rest. But beyond that, we want to offer hospitality
and friendship to our neighbors, remembering that
when Jesus described his kingdom, he said, “Just as
you did it to one of the least of these, you did it to
me.”
The flowers in the Narthex are given to the glory
of God and in honor of Joe and Mary Kathryn
Thompson Nance who were married on Saturday,
January 31, 2015 and also in memory of Thomas
Wilson Thompson, grandfather of the bride, and in
honor of Alma Thompson and Mary Wells Andrews,
grandmothers of the bride.
We offer our prayers and concern for those who are
ill at home, hospitalized and in hospice care.
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
As a continuum of the Prayer Day Centenary hosted
for Sylvia Shelton, we invite you to participate
in Prayers of the People, an opportunity to offer
Intercessory prayers on behalf of people, groups
and situations. The first Prayers of the People
will be Monday, February 2 and will continue
each Monday going forward. We will be ready to
receive each of you in fellowship and love as you
enter the Chapel at Centenary. We are not bound
to any rules. This is an exercise in love and belief
in prayer. The Chapel will be open from 8:00 am
until 5:30 pm. You may come at a time convenient
for you and we recommend that you enter by 4 ½
Street but the door by the Chapel on the Fifth Street
side will also be open.
Prayers of the People is open to all, so invite friends
and those you may feel interested.
Please direct any questions to Congregational Care,

Have you registered for your Lenten Study Group?
Small Groups will be meeting all across the city
in various locations for 6 weekly sessions. Come
discover how to give up Apathy for Lent and Do
Something for the Kingdom of God. Why? Because

called us to get involved. We will explore fasting,

partner with Jesus to bring the kingdom on earth as
it is in heaven.

Faith in Films
February 8, 15 & 22 • Memorial Auditorium • 2 pm
Have you ever celebrated the Passover Seder from the
perspective of Jesus? Missionary Lynn McCoy will be
with us using Scripture and visuals to show how Jesus
took the historical Passover Seder from the Exodus
event and transformed it for the New Covenant at
the Last Supper with his disciples. We will become
“families” around each table in the auditorium, and
walk through the traditional Haggadah (celebration
order) and eat the foods of the Seder. Advance tickets
are required ($10/person). Register online at www.
centenary-ws.org/?p=46 or call Tara Snow (3971342). For more information about this event,
contact Rev. Jonathan Brake (397-1334)/jbrake@
centenary-ws.org.
The 2015 series will explore characteristics that make
a person “heroic”. Cinema can draw us together as
few other mediums can. As has been true in past film
series at Centenary, all of the selections are cinematic
masterpieces.

Stories of the epic hero abound in world literature.
This year’s theme was inspired by Joseph Campbell’s
The Power Of Myth. In each film we will encounter a
character that overcomes challenges, survives radical
change, and fulfills a life-journey that results in
profound change. The story within each film reveals
common threads such as abandoning one’s old ways,
embarking on life-changing adventures, surviving
tribulations, and finally obtaining a heightened sense
of self-awareness or enlightenment. There will be a
brief introduction prior to each screening followed
by a discussion afterwards for those who wish to
remain. All are invited to attend. Adult themes are
presented so parental guidance is recommended.
Be a part of our Children’s Music Ministry!
Now is the perfect time to join a children's choir! All
of our choir groups are starting new music and would
love for more children to join us, from Kindermusik
(starting at age 2) - 5th grade. To register, go to www.
centenary-ws.org in the Children's Ministry section,
or contact Rev. Kate May (397-1331)/kmay@

ROOTS REVIVAL
Wednesday • February 4 • Memorial Auditorium
Roots Revival is a midweek worship service grounded in
Americana/roots-based music featuring Martha Bassett and
friends. Each service is centered around one or two focus
songs and an accompanying Scripture passage and theme.
This week, Rev. Sarah Howell will preach on one of her
favorite Bible passages, the story of Elijah going to meet
God on Mount Horeb in 1 Kings 19:11-13. It is here that
we see God speaking, not in a raging fire or a great wind
or a rumbling earthquake, but in “a still small voice” or
“a sound of silence.” We will use Justin Poindexter’s song
“Whisper” and Simon and Garfunkel’s “Sound of Silence”
to ask how we hear God’s voice—or don’t—in our own
lives. We are excited this week to welcome guest Matthew
Johnson, pastor at Grace UMC in Naperville, IL, and part of
the lead team for Portico Collective, an experimental mixedreality (that means both online and in person) Christian faith
community. We will broadcast a live podcast with Matthew
after the service and will make the link available through
our website and social media. Join us for this liturgical but
informal worship service where we celebrate communion
weekly. We meet at 7:30 pm on Wednesday nights in
Memorial Auditorium, and a group always goes out to
dinner afterward for unstructured fellowship time. Learn
more at www.rootsrevivalws.com or contact Rev. Sarah
Howell (397-1348)/[email protected]).
DAYBREAK/RESPITE CARE
Affairs of the Heart
February 21 • Memorial Auditorium • 3 pm
Save the Date for “Affairs of the Heart”, a gala fund-raiser
for DAYBreak/Respite Care, which will take place on
February 21 from 3-5 pm in Memorial Auditorium. Please
consider donating items for the auction which could include
gift cards, services, gift items, travel options, etc. Heavy
hors d’oeuvres, entertainment, a silent auction and bake
sale all are on track to raise funds for Centenary’s Respite
Care ministry. Tickets are $25.00. For more information
or tickets or to donate items, contact Jan Sawyer (3971345)/[email protected].
DAYBreak Respite Care Needs Volunteers!
Families are depending on DAYBreak Respite Care to
provide a good day to their loved ones. We need volunteers
to help us with this ministry! Currently, we particularly
need help on Mondays and Fridays. Volunteers can work
2, 3 or 5-hour shifts. If you enjoy being with people and
want to make a difference in the lives of older adults, please
contact Jan Sawyer (397-1345)/[email protected].
Please consider exploring respite care and sharing your
gifts with us.
GLAD TIDINGS
With Valentines right upon us, we do have some Two’s
Company’s scarves that will put the color in your cheeks!
NAPA offers us some nice preserved boxwood pieces that
are so pretty and the grouping includes preserved hearts
hanging from a sweet ribbon. Our hearts of love offer
something for everyone including dog lovers! Speaking of
dog lovers, please see the new book DOG – GOD. This
book is a guaranteed hit and special indeed as a gift!
We will offer two book discussions in the reading room next
to Glad Tidings for those of you who have read either Lila
or Bread and Wine or both. The gatherings will last about
an hour to an hour and a half so if you haven’t finished
reading the books, they are both so worthwhile and are
quick reads. It will be such fun discussing both the books
and we know our conversations will be beyond interesting.
Register for information on the book discussions in Glad
Tidings.
