Employment Opportunity – Internal/External
Youth in Transition Worker
Full-Time, Term Position
Note: duration of the term is unknown and pending confirmation from the funder. Term length will be specified at the time of interview.
Position Overview:
Tungasuvvingat Inuit (TI) is seeking a skilled and self-directed worker to assume a hands-on role in supporting youth aged
16-24 transition from the care of the child welfare sector or formal customary care. The Youth in Transition Worker will
provide Inuit specific, culturally enhanced resources and supports to clients so they can assume responsibility for their
own health and well-being, relationships, employment, housing and education and to create connections within their
community. The YIT Worker will help clients develop a plan to successfully transition from care to healthy and
independent living.
General Responsibilities:
• Establish a referral-to-program process with child welfare agencies, schools and other agencies involved with Youth in care;
• Develop program promotional materials and advertise the service;
• Help youth develop the goals they would like to achieve through their transition;
• Design a process for identifying family and community members who will form a supportive network for the youth in
transition. Facilitate other supportive networks to help youth achieve their goals;
• Work collaboratively with youths, and their support networks to create a plan for success to support youth transition;
• Research and compile services available to youth transitioning from care;
• Support youth leaving care to identify, access and navigate adult service systems relevant to their needs, and transition to
adulthood, providing emotional support;
• Connect youth to existing supports and resources in the community, including: o Housing supports;
o Educational resources;
o Employment services and training;
o Life skills training (e.g. financial management, household management);
o Health and mental health services; and
o Legal services;
• Work collaboratively with all staff to create and support an integrated services network within TI’s client services;
• Produce monthly and quarterly program reports indicating outcome and process accomplishments, and;
• Any admin required for the position (including data entry);
• Conduct program evaluation to assess the success of the program;
Requirements / Qualifications:
• Social Service Worker degree or equivalent in education, training and experience with 3-5 years experience in the child and
youth welfare field;
• Knowledge of issues related to youth in care, trauma and addictions;
• Knowledge of available resources in Ottawa and the surrounding areas;
• Knowledge of Inuit culture and values;
• Experience in conducting intake, individual counseling and group facilitation;
• Ability to initiate, develop and deliver programming;
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with youth, fellow employees and others;
• Strong initiative; motivated and able to work independently and with a high degree of autonomy;
• Fluent in English; fluency in Inuktitut is a strong asset;
• Proven track record of dependability and reliability;
• Computer proficiency (internet, Word, Excel, etc.);
• Ability to handle sensitive issues with tact, diplomacy and confidentiality;
• Ability to work evenings and weekends;
• Valid, clean Ontario driver’s license and own reliable transportation is essential. Mileage reimbursement is provided;
• Ability to travel as required.
Salary: Dependent on qualifications and experience
