Too much sitting or being couch-potatoes is only toxic to our health. We wish our Snowbird Probus members well as they venture south to experience new and familiar lifestyles. We other lucky ducks can embrace the winter season by relishing the sights and activities offered to us. Our Georgian Bay shoreline was transformed into humongous snow caves after one continuous week of snow squalls. We enjoy our weekends up north as we snowmobile, relax and walk in the glorious outdoors observing nature. This weekend we saw two foxes racing along the snowy shoreline. Seven were there with one guest. Tim had a guest from Germany who added a new look to our gathering. Our political horizon was broadened. Thus we were able to resolve all the problems on both sides of the pond. The food and beer were delightful! February will see us meeting on the 19th at Scruffy Murphy’s. When it works, stick with it! Harry The Walking Club James Rayner 416-233-1909 On Thursday, January 15, a hardy group of eleven walkers set out on a bracing winter walk. We began at Carlton and Yonge, making our way to the Mattamy Athletic Centre of Ryerson University in the former Maple Leaf Gardens. After our tour of the three floors of facilities, we ventured next door to the giant Loblaws store with its famous “wall of cheese”. Heading further east along Carlton, we arrived at the Allen Gardens greenhouse—a welcome respite from the cold weather. Fortunately for us, their seasonal display of poinsettias was still intact and we spent a delightful half hour admiring these colourful plants. Being warmed up, we set out into the cold and walked east to Parliament St., the western boundary of Cabbagetown. Admiring the beautiful architecture, we wandered up and down several Cabbagetown streets with our tour culminating at the Wellesley cottages, a collection of late nineteenth workers cottages, now very sought-after residences. Then it was up to Bloor and home via the Castle Frank station. The next walk is scheduled for Thursday, February 12. As the route will depend on the weather, please watch for an e-mail message the weekend before February 12, giving the details of the walk. If you are not on my mailing list you can contact me at the above phone number. 5 The Probus Club of Kingsway/Islington NEWSLETTER February 2015 Issue # 79 Synopsis of the presentation by our January speaker (entertainer) Jack Garson Trying to describe a concert through print is akin to trying to describe a beautiful sunset to a person who cannot see. However, we’ll give it a try by attempting to capture the atmosphere that our entertainer, Jack Garson created at the January 28 meeting of the Probus Club. Accompanying himself on the guitar and using a rhythm machine, he regaled us with many of the old standards interspersed with humour and audience participation. Starting with the Johnny Cash hit I Walk the Line, he swung into Bye, bye, Blackbird followed by I’ll Never Dance with Another. Rather than simply performing each song, he would stop singing from time to time and encourage the audience to supply the missing lyrics or to clap along with the rhythm, something they seemed to enjoy. The trip back into time continued with Has Anybody Seen my Gal? and Baby face, with King of the Road right after. Jack then asked about the origins of some club members—Irish, Scottish, English--and for each group he had appropriate numbers—Bring Back my Bonnie, Loch Lomond, An Irish Lullaby, MacNamara’s Band, I Wanna Hold your Hand. This British tour was followed by some good old country music. Returning to more recent times (for us!), we heard All Shook Up, The Twist (in which some unmentioned members of the audience actively participated), Rock Around the Clock, and a humourous take-off of Side by Side. The concert concluded with some tropical numbers: Jamaica Farewell, Yellow Bird, Matilda, Banana Boat Song and, again, the audience enthusiastically supplied the lines by singing along. The final numbers were The Music of the Night and that old great audience favourite, This Land is Your Land. All too soon the performance was over whereupon the audience heartily applauded. I think we were so enthusiastic because, not only did he sing many of the old favourites that we grew up with, but he also got the audience involved, making them active participants instead of just passive listeners. His amusing patter and jokes between numbers also kept us interested. As a result, all present seemed to really enjoy the concert.
