1 Region H—Oklahoma District– Chapter W January 2015 Directors Corner “FRIENDS FOR FUN, SAFETY AND KNOWLEDGE” Well Winter has began, I hope that you all had a blessed Holiday. We had a great Christmas party but we did miss Patsy. Thank you all for your support this last year, but we do need some more help this year. “Make New Year's goals. Dig within, and discover what you would like to have happen in your life this year. This helps you do your part. It is an affirmation that you're interested in fully living life in the year to come. Goals give us direction. They put a powerful force into play on a universal, conscious, and subconscious level. Goals give our life direction. NEWSLETTER CHAPER W WILD WEST WINGS Volume 12, Issue 1 What would you like to have happen in your life this year? What would you like to do, to accomplish? What good would you like to attract into your life? What particular areas of growth would you like to have happen to you? What blocks, or character defects, would you like to have removed? What would you like to attain? Little things and big things? Where would you like to go? What would you like to have happen in friendship and love? What would you like to have happen in your family life? Write it down. Take a piece of paper, a few hours of your time, and write it all down as an affirmation of you, your life, and your ability to choose. Then let it go. The new year stands before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written. We can help write that story by setting goals.” Hoping you and your have a blessed New Year. Terri What problems would you like to see solved? What decisions would you like to make? What would you like to happen in your career? We have our Gatherings at Gattitown pizza the 2nd Tuesday of the month. We start eating at 6pm and start our 7pm 5833 NW Expy, Oklahoma City, on the corner of NW Expy and MacArthur Blvd. Come see us!! 2 VOLUME 12, ISSUE 1 NEWSLETTER COUPLES CORNER Jesse and Ramona Chambers What a great evening with our GWRRA friends. I think everyone feels the same. We had a LOT of good food and fellowshipping. The well traveler was Dave Nelson with the most identified interesting places in Ok. and elsewhere. Erin was a very close second. Joe kept wanting to count his answers as being correct. Such as Driller, instead of the complete correct answer (Golden Driller) He does know his history about the Trail of Tears story and shared some of that. The smart one on the questionnaire was Greg, but I suspect Wendy was a big contributor on that. Mr. Dave was not as sharp on reading this sentence. Sallisaw Henryetta Wagoner Catoosa. Yes, sentence. Thank you Terri for a good year of leadership Jesse & Ramona January’s Birthday and Anniversaries Birthday Wanda Urban—4th Jesse Chambers—10th Chris Meade—17th Anniversaries Joe & Wanda Urban—29th If I missed your special day, please accept my apology and please notify me A ride is not complete until we stop at Braums!! 3 VOLUME 12, ISSUE 1 Page 3 MEC Spotlight MAP Recruiting!! Steve & Billie Fleming Can you recruit from a MAP presentation? Absolutely! The Motorist Awareness Program (MAP) is an excellent opportunity to get the public aware of motorcycles in the Share the Road campaign. It is also an excellent opportunity to make the public aware of GWRRA and our efforts to share our knowledge with them about motorcycle Safety. You never know when someone at your MAP presentation will become a biker or talk with another biker and mention our Association. This can lead to “new” friends for fun safety and knowledge. MAP is not just a Rider Education tool: it can be a recruiting tool as well. So if you haven’t considered putting on a MAP presentation in your Chapter, now may be a good time to get one the works. Be sure to have GWRRA Applications and MAP handouts ready. Keep some in your bike all the time. Remember our Motto “Friends for FUN, Safety and Knowledge” Confidence Self-confidence is the first requirement of any great achievement. Thought and Prayers Please keep Janice Nelson in your thoughts and Prayers She had finished all chemo treatments and at this time is in remission. She has started the reconstruction process Please keep Patsy Dougherty in your thoughts and Prayers As of November 26th Patsy Dougherty was diagnosed with Leukemia. She is undergoing treatments now at Mercy Hospital Rm 444, 4300 W Memorial Rd, OKC. She will be there for 4 to 6 weeks. She ask that you keep your visits to a minimum during this time due to the strength it takes to do this. You may send card to the house and Bob will get them to her PO Box 344, Okarche, OK 73762. I'm sure Bob would appreciate a meal or snacks for him since he is at home alone during this time. If you would like to arrange a meal for him you can give me a call and I would be glad to take it out if needed. If you would like to donate Blood for Patsy go to any OBI and tell them her name and where she is, it would be the greatest gift. 4 VOLUME 12, ISSUE 1 Contingency Prize Donation Please bring three or four items of your choice to the gathering. I wanted to share this information with you so that you are aware of it first and to explain my reasoning in case there are questions when it becomes general knowledge. I will be formally announcing my resignation to the Oklahoma members at the Polar Bear Ride and in the January newsletter article. As everyone is probably already aware, I have been dealing with some severe dementia issues with my mother since she moved in with us in March. Prior to that time, she was living on her own in Illinois and quite frankly, I had no idea that she was that far along or I wouldn't have submitted my name for the District Director position. Recently, she has been experiencing hallucinations and a marked inability to distinguish dreams from reality. We now have legal powers of attorney so that we can provide her medical care and provide for her financial well-being. Debbie's mom and dad moved in with us in April after her mother suffered a slight heart attack. They have been a tremendous help to us during these last 9 months as without them here to help us with my mother, even leaving her alone so we can go to work would be a tremendous risk to her safety. However, the situation still doesn't allow us to be able to travel any distance and leave her behind. Not being able to attend other District Conventions, struggling to attend Chapter Gatherings and anniversaries and represent the District as I feel it should be represented has led to my resignation. Having three octogenarians in the same household definitely keeps things interesting. My mom is 82, Debbie's dad is 81 and her mom is 80. While it isn't nearly as bad as it first appears, there is certainly never a dull moment. I will remain on the District Staff in my position as the Assistant District Educator as Max Rowlett has graciously agreed not to fire me and that role doesn't require me to travel nearly as much as the Director position would. I truly love this organization and the people in it and have no intentions of leaving it any time soon. I hope and pray that I can be of as much assistance to Max and the Rider Education Program as all of you have been to me. Bill Rhoades Oklahoma District Director The New Directors are Johnnie & Gina Fredman and will sworn in at the End of the Year meeting in Stroud on Jan 31st. 5 Christmas Party Dec 6, 2014 6 VOLUME 12, ISSUE 1 SAFETY ARTICLE RIDER ED ‘GIMME 5’ TOPIC: End of Season Cycle Maintenance Whether the riding season in your area lasts only four or five months, or as long as ten months, most of us will let our motorcycles remain unridden for a long enough period of time that it is best to prepare it for a season of rest. November typically brings weather throughout the northern tier of states that is not very good for motorcycling. Most parts of this great country of ours experience two or more months of weather that is not considered part of the riding season. The air temperature alone gets cold enough to cause hypothermia without adding the wind chill from sitting atop a motorcycle while blasting down the road at legal speeds – even at 45 mph. And many areas will have snow on the ground before the month is out. Some of you may be cold-blooded enough to prolong the season a few extra weeks, but for most, there is a period each year when your motorcycle becomes a lonesome friend sitting quietly in the garage. Before you park it for a season of inactivity, this is a great time to get your end of season maintenance done. It is recommended that you change the oil and oil filter to remove contaminants – dirt, deposits, acids and moisture – that can lead to corrosion inside the engine. Other fluid levels should be checked for proper level. If the fluids are due for replacement based on miles ridden since the last change (check your manual and service history), this is a good time to do that and any other maintenance tasks that you may have been putting off. Your mechanic likely is not very busy at this time of year. He (she) would probably appreciate your visit, too! And you know your bike will be better for it. Then when spring comes next year (it is not that far off, after all!), you’ll be ready to go without a visit to the mechanic before planning your next big ride. After you get it back from your mechanic, fill the gas tank and add the appropriate amount of fuel stabilizer (such as Stabil) before parking your Wing. Wash and wax the bike and inflate the tires. The battery should be disconnected from the motorcycle (negative terminal first) and trickle charged at least every 30 days, per your Gold Wing Owner’s Manual. (Refer to your battery charger manual for more charging details.) Take good care of your Wing, and your Wing will take good care of you! Ride Smart & Be Safe! Bruce & Melissa Thayer Former MI Asst.
