Jesus has always many who love his
heavenly kingdom, but few who bear his
cross. He has many who desire consolation,
but few who care for trial. He finds many to
share his table, but few to take part in his
fasting. All desire to be happy with him;
few wish to suffer anything for him. Many
follow him to the breaking of bread, but
few to the drinking of the chalice of his
passion. Many revere his miracles; few
approach the shame of the cross. Many love
him as long as they encounter no hardship;
many praise and bless him as long as they
receive some comfort from him. …
Those, on the contrary, who love Jesus
for his own sake and not for any
comfort of their own, bless him in all trial
and anguish of heart as well as in
the bliss of consolation. …
What power there is in pure love for Jesus
— love that is free from all self-interest
and self-love!
—Thomas à Kempis,

Dear Friends at Vermont Street United Methodist Church,
As we reflect upon another year gone by, we are profoundly grateful your support
of the programs and ministry work here at Horizons. We have a dream for no one
in our community to be hungry, but most importantly, an intense desire to change
lives through the love of Jesus Christ. With your support we are changing lives.
I want to update you on the impact you are having on lives throughout our
community. With your help Horizons was able to accomplish the following in 2014:
 Facilitated the distribution of 108,000 pounds of food to local food pantries
 Served 25,000 hot meals in Horizons Soup Kitchen
 Served more than 3,000 different… unduplicated individuals
 Donated food to 5,600 individuals in Horizons Food Pantry
 Served over 2,500 children under the age of 18 in our soup kitchen
 Our partner church volunteers worked over 12,000 volunteer hours
 United 15 churches in Quincy to be the hand and feet of Christ
We are never more like Jesus than when we are giving and serving. Thank you for
the many ways you give and serve. We pray for God’s blessings to be upon your
church family in the New Year and always.

Calling all parents!
Vermont Street is hosting focus groups
to discuss the future of our children's
Sunday School and discipleship
opportunities. It is important to us that we offer
discipleship opportunities both for our adults and
our children. Over the next couple months the
education team is going to consider the feedback
we gain from these initial focus groups and look
at developing discipleship programming that
meets the needs of our parents and children here
at Vermont Street. It is our hope that you will
prayerfully consider joining us on one of these
dates to participate in providing constructive
feedback so that we may grow closer together as a
church family, and strengthen our relationship
with Christ.

Wedding Coordinators Needed
Do you love weddings? Would you enjoy the opportunity
to help a bride and groom through the intricacies of
planning their wedding at VSUMC? Then becoming a
wedding coordinator might be just the outlet for you!
DiAnne Hughes has served as our wedding coordinator
for a number of years, and is passing along the torch.
Priscilla McElroy will be picking up some weddings, and
we’d like to find another one or two persons to serve with
her. The wedding coordinator does receive a fee for this
work – you won’t get rich, but there’s a great deal of
satisfaction in helping out with planning and
implementing a couple’s special day. If you’d be interested
in learning more, please contact DiAnne at 224-6905, or
Pastor Patty in the church office.
I hope you’ll be in prayer for us as we travel. I
confess to being a little anxious about flying that
far, into an area that isn’t always the safest. But I
am living with trust in Christ for a safe flight both
ways, and an experience of a lifetime in Israel.
Shalom my friends!

Disaster recovery begins with an Early Response Team

$40 for the full day. Cost includes background check, training materials,
lunch, t-shirt and UMCOR badge (badge valid for 3 years).
The deadline for registration is usually 8 days before the training.
Visit the Disaster Response website with explanations and
link to registration: http://www.igrc.org/disasterresponse
Class size is limited to the first 30 registrants.
The mission of an ERT is to provide a caring Christian presence in the
aftermath of disaster. The team is neither a first response group of emergency
workers nor a recovery, rebuild or repair team. Rather, it fills a specific need in
the early days after a disaster to establish the presence of the church.
ERTs are trained primarily to respond within their own community.

Youth Mission Trip 2015
I am pleased to announce that the 2015 mission trip will take place June 6 - 13. I am happy that we will be
partnering with the Epworth Project, founded by Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Slidell, Louisiana.
This trip will allow the participants to be the hands and feet of Jesus in their service to the underprivileged
population of southeast Louisiana who are still suffering from the afflictions of Hurricane Katrina, 10 years
after this devastating storm first made landfall.
“You will live completely in every moment serving with every ounce of your being participating in
projects from hanging drywall, laying tile, constructing handicap ramps, and home rebuilds to working in food
and clothing distribution, assisting clients with household needs, and loving clients by listening to their
stories” (Epworth Project).
Participants will also have the privilege of learning about the Louisiana culture as well as the unique
problems that citizens of this region face.
Feel free to contact me with any questions ([email protected]).
More information to come!

To the members of Vermont Street United Methodist Church, our youth would like to thank you for
participating in the Souper Bowl of Caring Food Drive! All of the proceeds will be donated to the Horizons
Soup Kitchen. This is just one small way that we can impact hunger in our community!
