Patty Johansen www.vsumc.org open minds... open hearts... open doors... Sunday Worship Schedule Classic Worship 9 am Sunday School 10 am Contemporary Worship 11 am Jesus has always many who love his heavenly kingdom, but few who bear his cross. He has many who desire consolation, but few who care for trial. He finds many to share his table, but few to take part in his fasting. All desire to be happy with him; few wish to suffer anything for him. Many follow him to the breaking of bread, but few to the drinking of the chalice of his passion. Many revere his miracles; few approach the shame of the cross. Many love him as long as they encounter no hardship; many praise and bless him as long as they receive some comfort from him. … Those, on the contrary, who love Jesus for his own sake and not for any comfort of their own, bless him in all trial and anguish of heart as well as in the bliss of consolation. … What power there is in pure love for Jesus — love that is free from all self-interest and self-love! —Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ Vermont Street Views page 2 Vermont Street UMC Staff Rev. Vermont Street is hosting focus groups to discuss the future of our children's Sunday School and discipleship opportunities. It is important to us that we offer discipleship opportunities both for our adults and our children. Over the next couple months the education team is going to consider the feedback we gain from these initial focus groups and look at developing discipleship programming that meets the needs of our parents and children here at Vermont Street. It is our hope that you will prayerfully consider joining us on one of these dates to participate in providing constructive feedback so that we may grow closer together as a church family, and strengthen our relationship with Christ. Wedding Coordinators Needed Do you love weddings? Would you enjoy the opportunity to help a bride and groom through the intricacies of planning their wedding at VSUMC? Then becoming a wedding coordinator might be just the outlet for you! DiAnne Hughes has served as our wedding coordinator for a number of years, and is passing along the torch. Priscilla McElroy will be picking up some weddings, and we’d like to find another one or two persons to serve with her. The wedding coordinator does receive a fee for this work – you won’t get rich, but there’s a great deal of satisfaction in helping out with planning and implementing a couple’s special day. If you’d be interested in learning more, please contact DiAnne at 224-6905, or Pastor Patty in the church office. I hope you’ll be in prayer for us as we travel. I confess to being a little anxious about flying that far, into an area that isn’t always the safest. But I am living with trust in Christ for a safe flight both ways, and an experience of a lifetime in Israel. Shalom my friends! I am happy that we will be partnering with the Epworth Project, founded by Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Slidell, Louisiana. This trip will allow the participants to be the hands and feet of Jesus in their service to the underprivileged population of southeast Louisiana who are still suffering from the afflictions of Hurricane Katrina, 10 years after this devastating storm first made landfall. “You will live completely in every moment serving with every ounce of your being participating in projects from hanging drywall, laying tile, constructing handicap ramps, and home rebuilds to working in food and clothing distribution, assisting clients with household needs, and loving clients by listening to their stories” (Epworth Project). Participants will also have the privilege of learning about the Louisiana culture as well as the unique problems that citizens of this region face. Feel free to contact me with any questions ([email protected]).
