Coming This Lent: A six part study and video series entitled Jesus’ Resurrection:
Then and Now with The Rt. Rev. Dr. N.T. Wright who occupies the Chair of
New Testament and Early Christianity in the School of Divinity at the University
of St Andrews, Scotland. He is one of the world's most distinguished and
influential New Testament scholars. Among his many books are Jesus and the
Victory of God, The Resurrection of the Son of God and Surprised by Hope.
Bishop Wright has argued persistently and at considerable length that we
cannot understand the historical rise of the early Christian movement unless we
take as basic their belief that Jesus was bodily raised from the dead, leaving an
empty tomb behind him. The best reason for the rise of that belief is that it really
did happen. It remains enormously important that we investigate the historical
origins of Christianity. As Pope Benedict XVI himself has insisted, what actually
happened in the first century matters: we believe in a God who came into the very
stuff and substance of our flesh and blood and died a real death. Yes, and rose again
three days later. For an interesting article by Wright that summarizes his approach

The Pastor’s Blog
* In Our Prayers: for those who have died, especially: Wilfred Clouthier, brother of Corrine
Thomson, Robert Clouthier and Janice Bonnar; Marie Sherk, mother of Dave Sherk; Bert
Herrick; and Fr. Jim Duffy of Madonna House.
* Congratulations to one of our altar servers, James Coady, who won the January draw for $20.
If your son or daughter has made their 1st Holy Communion, they can begin serving at the Altar.
* This is a reminder that the K4J(Kids for Jesus) will be meeting this Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in
the Parish Hall.
* The Parish Pastoral Council met recently to review the pastoral and catechetical life of our
parish community. Among the items discussed: the recent and upcoming Synod on the Family,
the possibility of sponsoring a Christian family from the Middle East, the pastoral problem of
how the decrease in Sunday observance and sporadic participation in the Sunday Eucharist in a
church our size is beginning to bring about a fragmentation of our congregations and ministries;
how can we facilitate a better sense of gathering as a community on the Lord’s Day rather than
simple pastoral-sacramental maintenance; is it time to have only one Sunday morning Mass (i.e.,
9:00 or 9:30 or 10:00 a.m.) followed by fellowship, family events, parish breakfasts and
catechetical formation on certain Sundays throughout the year?
* The Parish Finance Committee met recently to review the revenues and expenditures for the
past fiscal year 2014 and approve a financial report for parishioners which you will receive along
with a pastoral letter and charitable donation receipts in early February.
Our report this year indicates that we are modestly in the black. With this year's Parish
Harvest Festival and Direct Appeal, we retired the debt incurred for the renewal of the church
parking lot that was temporarily covered by parish investments.
While establishing a budget that enables us to meet our regular operating expenses and
minor capital expenditures/repairs, there continues to be planning regarding major up and
coming capital projects: the restoration of the masonry on the front of the church and towers
(next 2 years), a new roof for the parish hall (next 5 years) and boiler replacements for the church
(next 5 years). In addition to the Festival and Appeal, there will be a need to once again engage
other methods of fundraising for these major projects.
Thank you for your faith-filled generosity and your financial commitment St. John
Chrysostom Parish.
* The following are the members of the Parish Finance Committee:
Fr. Burchat, President 623-2282
Jim Mulvihill, Chairperson 623-3079
John Tammadge 623-0736

G The Sacraments at St. John Chrysostom Parish g
Pastoral Visits To The Hospital: To be
sure you receive a visit from the Pastoral
Care Team, you or your family should
notify the parish office if you desire to
receive the Sacraments of the Church. Holy
Communion is brought at least once a week
to those who have requested a pastoral visit.
The list we have access to at the hospital
does not always indicate that you have been
admitted and have requested a visit.
The Sacrament of the Sick: This
sacrament should be requested when
undergoing a serious operation or when
serious illness is first evident or continuing.
It can be received after any Mass by request
Pastoral Care of the Dying: When one
becomes aware that one is dying, it's time to
call a priest in order to receive the
Sacraments and prepare for death while he
or she is still lucid. Be sure to make your
desires known to members of your family
who are able to understand and take
seriously the importance of the sacraments.
Pastoral Care of the Sick/Homebound: If
you know someone is not able to go to
church and would welcome a home visit
with a member of our Pastoral Care Team,
please leave your name and phone number
at the parish office at 613-623-2282. After
proper instruction, family members can also be
permitted to bring Holy Communion home
after any Mass.
02/01/15
Sacrament of Penance: Confessions can be
heard after every weekday Mass (Our Lady’s
Chapel), every Saturday from 4:00 - 4:15 p.m.
(Reconciliation Room at the Church entrance),
and also by appointment.
Sacrament of Baptism: To arrange for the
Baptism of your child please first meet with Fr.
Burchat after any Sunday Mass before
registering for catechetical instruction. The next
date until after Easter for the celebration of the
Rite of Baptism is next Sunday, February 8th.
The Sacrament of Marriage: We congratulate
all couples who have decided to enter into the
Sacrament of Christian Marriage! Christian
Marriage requires some catechetical formation
and those scheduling their marriage are asked to
personally speak to Fr. Burchat after any
Sunday Mass at least six months before the
proposed celebration. A three day diocesan
marriage preparation course is officially required
by the Diocese of Pembroke.
A Catholic who is free to marry, and is
planning to do so, in the Christian
denomination of their fiancé is still required by
the law of the Catholic Church to obtain
permission from the Bishop so that their marriage
is celebrated as a valid Sacrament.
Catholics who have married “outside”
the Church need to consult with their parish
priest so as discern how they can begin to return
to full communion with the Church as the Body
of Christ in their marriage.

St. John Chrysostom Church. Lighthouse Catholic Media offers a practical and effective program
to help Catholics know their Faith, keep their Faith, and share their Faith! We all have friends or
family members who have fallen away from the Church, or loved ones who are searching for answers
about their Faith and want to increase their knowledge and understanding but don't know where
to begin. Now you can reach out to them by offering a wonderful learning tool - a Lighthouse CD.
Whether in the car or at home, people can deepen their understanding of the Catholic Faith when
they listen to inspiring talks given by some of the best Catholic speakers in the world. In the back
of the church, you will see a display offering 16 different CD titles, and 5 different booklets and 4
different books. We ask for a donation of $5 per CD or book, and $3 per booklet so that we may
continue this program. Won't you reach out and help bring someone home?

Stewardship: Total Last Sunday Offering was $4,827.65
(Includes: 185 of 345 registered envelopes; 34 Direct Deposit for $910.00; Loose of $126.90)
In light of the 1 hour out of 168 hours in week that you spend with the Lord at Sunday Mass,
would you consider giving the equivalent of an hour of your wages towards the Sunday collection?
Please take the time to discern your contribution in light of this principle and increase your offering
if your budget permits. The act of generosity, whether in time, talent or treasure, is integral to the
act of faith. The fifth precept of the Church is "You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church." The
Catechism notes that this "means that the faithful are obliged to assist with the material needs of the
Church, each according to his own ability." Thank you for your financial commitment and generosity.
