The Future of Health and Productivity in the U.S.
Thomas Parry, PhD, President, Integrated Benefits Institute
Chris McSwain, Chief Strategy Officer, Aason, LLC.
Gary Earl, Health & Well-Being Ambassador, Anthem Life/Wellpoint
Brad Johnson, EVP of Operational Strategy and Shared Services, Sedgwick
Kathy McAlpine, Senior Director, Benefits, Kraft Foods
Tammy Green, Director, Well-being and Absence Management, Providence
Health & Services
There has never been as much diversity, volatility or uncertainty in the direction
employers will take in managing workforce health and productivity as there is today.
Last summer, at its strategic planning retreat, IBI’s Board of Directors explored these
issues. This preconference workshop will focus on three aspects of that conversation:
2
(1) forces influencing the way in which employers are responding to managing
workforce health and productivity, (2) implications for how employers planning on
maintaining a more “traditional” role in healthcare will proceed and (3) implications
for how employers planning on taking a more “consumer-centric” approach will
move forward. The panel will be moderated by former IBI Board Chairman Chris
McSwain; panel members will include Kathy McAlpine from Kraft; Gary Earl from
Anthem-Wellpoint; Tammy Green from Providence Health Systems and Brad
Johnson from Sedgwick CMS. The audience is invited to participate fully in the
conversation.

performance and organizational impacts from a series of employee and manager
surveys. The presentation and subsequent panel discussion will address population
health themes and key components of the work environment that are highly related
to employee health, well-being, performance and organizational impacts. Panelists

offerings in workforce health and productivity management has not been explicitly
determined, and is a subject of some debate. This session will share expert
perspectives regarding the role that private exchanges may play in supporting
workforce health management efforts. Each of the panelists has a unique
perspective, and together will provide an insightful look at the role of private
exchanges. By directly addressing the critical employer decision-making process, this
presentation will summarize available research and describe how workforce health,
well-being, and performance can be further enhanced in the setting of private
exchanges.

In the search for better access to quality healthcare in a changing landscape, there
has been a strong focus on technological advancement. Technologies are being
developed to maintain employee well-being as well as facilitate treatment and
recovery when injuries and illnesses do occur. These novel technological
advancements include telemedicine, real time visual connectivity, google glass,

printers, and robotic devices. Panelists will speak to how technology can expand
healthcare coverage and service to more Americans in addition to how these
alternative delivery models offer opportunities for providers to connect with their
patients in a different way. This session brings together experts to discuss trends in
innovation and the measurements used to evaluate the impact of new technologies

Using Consumer Activation to Better Understand Consumer Behavior and
Outcomes
Craig Kurtzweil, Senior Vice President, Analytic Innovations, UnitedHealth
Group
Andrea Romisher, Vice President Benefits, Kindred Healthcare
Recogni zing the impact consumer behavior has on health care and related costs,
Unum and UnitedHealth Group took aim at consumer health activation with their
Consumer Activation Index (CAI), a tool used for measuring decision making and
short-term disability exposure. In a study of 17 customers with 270k members, the
CAI was used to determine if individuals make an optimal clinical, financial or
service choice when faced with a health care decision. The CAI navigates individuals
through 51 decision points to complete its assessment. By better understanding
consumer behavior, members can then seek to modify behavior to achieve better
health. The discussion will highlight how CAI works and its results in relation to short
term disability and productivity.

Partnership and Prevention: Utilizing Different Health Networks to
Prevent Disease and Promote Performance
John Sinnot, MD Chairman, Internal Medicine, USFHealth
Antonio Iglesias, Regional Medical Director, Pfizer, Inc.
Approximately 50,000 adults die each year in the US from vaccine-preventable

The first step in this collaboration was to model the direct and indirect benefit costs
associated with Community Acquired Pneumonia (CAP). This session will reveal the
economic burden of CAP and the advantages of partnerships to deter CAP incidents.

Harris Allen, PhD, Founder & Principal, Harris Allen Group
Wayne Burton, MD, Chief Medical Officer, American Express
William Bunn, MD, Vice President, Navistar
Michael Erdil, MD, Associate Professor, University of Connecticut School of
Medicine
Up to 84% of the general population has been found to report low back pain (LBP)
symptoms at some point during their lifetime. This session will focus on a recent
study undertaken for the cultivation of evidence on issues key to a successful
program of illness/injury prevention, reduction of workers’ compensation, and
disability and healthcare costs. This study longitudinally tracked episodes of three
types of ICD-9 diagnosis and found that care congruent with 10 of 11 guidelines was
linked to lower total costs. Speakers will discuss the study’s findings on how these
approaches marked by higher resource utilization and lower guideline congruence
are ultimately linked to greater LBP total costs as well as a fundamental impact on
employer investment in health and productivity.
