Eagles Newsletter ALVA Aerie 871 January March 2015 President's Message Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all. With just five months remaining in the Fraternal Year, ALVA Aerie 871 is doing well; a renewed local interest in fellowship and charitable fund raising has seen our membership eclipse the 800 mark in the month of December. I would like to thank those that continue to share the good news of what the Fraternal Order Of Eagles is all about and those that have been able to find like-minded “selfless people” to join our cause. If you have personally not done so yet, I ask each of you to find that person in your social circle that is worthy of becoming an Eagle and bring them in for a visit to see what we are about. I would like to thank the Officers that serve our club and those that continue to serve in one capacity or another, with or without a title. Our Aerie is a better place because of those members whose tireless efforts make the place function day in and day out. I encourage each of you to continue to volunteer and ask our Trustees where “you” might be of assistance. As we ease into the Winter Season, please keep our mission of assisting those in need and ill health in the forefront of your mind. Our world continues to be a volatile place and while there is much civil unrest and uncertainty here on the home front, I encourage you to look within our organization and community to help make the lives of your fellowman better in some small way. Words cannot describe my appreciation for the opportunity to be called “Worthy President” of this organization and offer my most humble gratitude for the work you continue to do. You are an amazing group of people. May God keep you safe, healthy, and provide for all of your needs in the New Year. They will also lose whatever time (total years) they have invested in the club. We have a wonderful Webmaster who keeps our website up to date. So, if you want to know what is going on, check it out at foe871.com. Dee Dee Hodge Worthy Secretary Chaplain's Corner Our brother Larry Stewardson died on December 27th. Please keep Larry's family and friends in your thoughts and prayers as they grieve. Also, as of publication of this newsletter, Wally Johnson is in Mount Vernon Hospital after a fall. Keep Wally and all our other brothers and sisters who are ill, injured and grieving in your hearts as we begin this new year. As always, if you know of someone in our Aerie who needs our support or sympathy, please contact us. You can send email to [email protected] or leave a message with our Worthy Secretary, Dee Dee Hodge (703-548-1362), or one of the bartenders on duty in the Rathskeller (703-836-9734). Paul Edson Worthy Chaplain Trustee Notes Aerie Home Upgrades ─ We continue to solicit ideas and suggestions for needed repairs and improvement to the Hall, Rathskeller, kitchens and bathrooms. To date, the membership has not provided any suggestions or ideas to the BOT. The BOT plans to move forward in January 2015 to solicit bids from local contractors to develop renovation scenarios with estimated costs to present to the membership. We anticipate using self help to complete parts of the renovation to keep costs down where possible. At this point nothing is off the table. January ̶ March 2015 Volunteers Need ─ As always, we encourage ALL members to get involved and join us at the Aerie bi-weekly meetings (1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month). We ask any interested members to volunteer and help make our events as successful and enjoyable as possible. The future potential of our Aerie is limitless and each of us can make a difference. Please continue to make Aerie 871 the best it can be! Lockers ─ There are a limited number of lockers available for rent. Rent is $20.00 a year. If you would like a locker to store your liquor, leave your name and contact information with the bartender on duty in the Rathskeller. A Trustee will contact you with the locker number and combination. Parking ─ If you need to park in the lot temporarily outside of normal business hours, you must notify either the Board of Trustees or the bartender on duty. You must place your membership card on the dashboard so we can identify the vehicle as belonging to one of our members. Ensure you place the card so your name is visible. Reminder ─ Please remember to clean your tables before leaving the Rathskeller (i.e., appropriately dispose of drinking vessels, dirty plates and silverware, napkins, and clean ashtrays, etc.). In the absence of our volunteers the club might be forced to bring in hired help which is a cost we don't want to incur.
