FEBRUARY 2015 January 2015 Catholic Schools Mass Students in grades K – 8 and the administration, faculty and staff at St. Joseph’s Elementary School in Batavia traveled to ND on Thursday, January 8, 2015 to celebrate the annual Genesee County Catholic Schools Mass with the administration, faculty and staff, and students in grades 9 – 12 at ND. Bishop Malone is pictured with fellow priests and Deacon Walter Szczesny ‘75 prior to the January 9, 2015 Catholic Schools Mass at Notre Dame. The Most Rev. Richard Malone, Bishop of the Diocese of Buffalo, served as the main celebrant and was joined by Rev. Richard Csizmar, Rev. Innocent Diala, Rev. James Kirkpatrick, Rev. James Fugle, Msgr. Leo McCarthy, Rev. Walter Szczesny ’72 , Rev. Ivan Trujilo, Rev. Ryszard Biernat and Deacon Walter Szczesny ’76. Bishop Malone’s visit to ND was his 3rd in the last 6 months having celebrated a mass at St. Joseph’s Church [Resurrection Parish, Batavia] and also having served as the celebrant at the ND Class of 2014’s Baccalaureate Mass on May 31, 2014. Page 1 Principal’s Corner Dr. Joseph D. Scanlan ‘65 I hope that our February 2015 issue finds everyone in good health and looking forward to Punxstawney Phil’s the renowned Pennsylvania groundhog - prediction that we should only have six more weeks of winter! Actually, we’ve been very fortunate weather-wise (with a few exceptions) with our recent amazingly milder January temperatures! Time continues to fly by at 73 Union Street! Our students are currently completing a week of January Regents exams and local midterms and our 2nd semester officially starts on February 2, 2015. Highlights of notable activities and accomplishments since our December 2014 issue “hit the presses” include: • Our traditional Student Senate-sponsored semi-formal Christmas Dance was once again well attended by students across all grade levels on Saturday, December 13, 2014. Student Senate Advisor John Deaton and all grade level senators did a great job, once again, decorating the gym and planning for this year’s semiformal dance. • Our ND Mission Club, under the leadership of advisor Alana Schrader, once again engaged in successful Angel Tree and Salvation Army Christmas time bell ringing service projects during the month of December. Angel Tree gift collections benefited needy families in the area through Genesee Area Ministry of Concern while bell ringing helped the Salvation Army raise necessary funds for their own Christmas outreach programs. • Our Fighting Irish Winter athletic teams, under the watchful eye of Director of Athletics, Mr. Michael Rapone ‘71, remain competitive as of our January 27, 2015 publication date! Leading the pack of midseason performances is our Varsity Girls [9 - 2] Basketball team playing in the C1 Sectional bracket this year. Our youthful Varsity Hockey team - 2/3 of our roster are freshmen and sophomores - has already posted 7 victories including a recent 5 – 4 overtime victory over a Class A team from the combined Brighton -East Rochester-HF-L Monroe County school districts! Our Varsity Boys and Girls Swim teams are currently preparing for the January 31, 2015 GR League meet at Gates-Chili High School. Genesee Region competition will wrap up within the next couple of weeks with Section V tournament play scheduled to follow. Sports fans should consult upcoming issues of the Batavia Daily News and the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle as well as our ND web page – www.ndhsbatavia.com - calendar for tournament dates, locations and opponents. • Campus Ministry Updates: Father James Fugle, Pastor of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish [East PembrokeCorfu] celebrated mass on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception for students, faculty and staff. Father John Hayes, Pastor of St. Mary of the Assumption [Scottsville], Sts. Patrick and Columba [Caledonia] and St.Vincent [Churchville] celebrated an Advent mass prior to Christmas recess with faculty, staff and students on December 19, 2014. ND Board member and Ascension [Batavia] Parish Deacon Walter Szczesny ’76 assisted at mass. ND students and faculty and staff members celebrated this year’s Catholic Schools Week mass on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at ND with Bishop Richard Malone as our main celebrant [see photos in this newsletter] along with K – 8 students from our partner school St. Joseph’s Elementary in Batavia. • Our ND Technology Committee [ND Board of Trustee Phil Bleier] continues to assess the technology needs of ND and our students. The next meeting of the Technology Committee will be scheduled in February. Stay tuned for an e-blast to follow! • Our ND Buildings and Grounds Committee [ND Board of Trustee Don Bausch] continues to address building level and campus needs as they appear. A major painting project took place over Christmas recess [upper and lower level locker area wall painting and door trim painting throughout the building] courtesy of a crew from the Wyoming Correctional Facility under the supervision of Head Custodian Ralph Coffta. (Continued on page 3) Page 2 (Continued from page 2) Welcome Mrs. Antinore! Mrs. Kathy Antinore began her Advancement/Business Office Support responsibilities on Monday, January 5, 2015, our first day back from Christmas recess! Make it a point to stop by our Advancement-Business Office to welcome her to ND. She is currently involved in behind-the-scenes assistance with our upcoming February 14, 2014 ND Foundation Trip Night. She will also be the contact person for alumni seeking information regarding setting up class reunions. E-blast Communications: ND Newsletters and important notices for parents and alumni are currently being sent electronically through mass e-mail notices generated by Mrs. Kathy Antinore – [email protected] - in our Advancement Office! Please contact Mrs. Antinore if you change your e-mail address as we do not want anyone “left out of the loop”! If you know of people who are not receiving our e-blasts who also have an e-mail address, please have them forward it to Mrs. Antinore so they can receive updates from ND! 23rd Annual ND Foundation Trip Night Update: Please make it a point to support ND by purchasing a ticket[s] to this year’s upcoming Trip Night which will be held at Batavia Downs on Valentine’s Day from 6 – 10 p.m. Make sure to check out the advertisement for this year’s event contained in this edition of the ND online newsletter! Here is hoping that the “luck of the Irish” is with you at this year’s gala event! “2014 Faith in the Future” Capital Campaign Update: The “silent phase” of our current $5 million dollar campaign was very successful and has accounted for $2.5 million of our overall $5 million dollar goal. Campaign information has been mailed out in December 2014 and follow up calls are currently being made by individual class captains. We truly appreciate the heart-felt generosity of alumni and alumnae who have either given or pledged to date and encourage all graduates and friends of ND to consider giving in order for us to successfully reach our goal by this June. Any funds which exceed our $5 million dollar goal will be credited to the endowment portion of the campaign which is aimed at helping families afford our current $8,900 yearly tuition cost. Inclement weather procedures: Just a reminder . . . If inclement weather necessitates closing school during winter months, we will post our own delays and closings under the name of Notre Dame High School. If you do not see Notre Dame High School listed as delayed or closed, please know that we are open for business as usual! Our 2nd marking period report cards are scheduled to be mailed out on Friday, February 5, 2015. We, as the faculty, staff and administration of Notre Dame High School, continue to appreciate, as well as expect, your support of high expectations and academic excellence at ND. Regents and especially AP and college-level courses can be very challenging for some students, yet perseverance and hard work will pay off in the long run, especially when it comes to college review of transcripts. Colleges and universities routinely look favorably on students who take a demanding course of studies. Please encourage your student[s] to take the "high road" and challenge him [her] self academically – in spite of the difficulty of these courses - by taking challenging college-level and Advanced Placement [AP] courses offered at ND as they provide our students with an important introduction to the rigors of college work. You’ll be doing your student a favor if you do so [in spite of the fact that they may not always agree!] Please also make a point of tapping into the high level of expertise and practical experience in the areas of college preparation, admissions and scholarships which Mrs. Nancy Parker, our Guidance Counselor, continues to bring with her to ND this year! Mrs. Parker has played a key role in the college acceptance rate and scholarships earned by our students during the previous nine [9] years she has been our Guidance Counselor. Mrs. Parker was a key factor in the ND Class of 2010's 5.5 Million dollar scholarship earnings!!! ND graduating classes average nearly 3 million dollars of scholarships received annually. There is no short cut to success! Students will get out of it [meaning, of course, their academic studies] what they put into it! Continue to encourage your student[s] to “shoot for the stars” when it comes to attending school in a regular, punctual manner, preparing for and participating in class, completing assignments, and studying for tests. Taking pride in one’s work and appearance and working towards one’s potential will continue to pay our students numerous dividends down the road as evidenced by the recent accomplishments of (Continued on page 4) Page 3 (Continued from page 3) our most recent graduates. ND faculty members are available daily to assist students who need extra help. Please encourage your student to take advantage of their expertise if extra help is needed. • Please take the time to get regular feedback from your student on his or her academic schedule and progress in school. • Our teachers are easily accessible by e-mail [please refer to the back cover of our 2014-2015 “Student and Parent Directory” and our website under “Contact Us” for e-mail addresses] so please continue to keep the lines of communication open. A little encouragement [either to work harder or for a “job well done”] can also go along way! Thanks, again, for your support of our overall program, especially the beliefs and principles we stand for at Notre Dame High School! Please also know that we all appreciate the invaluable role that our alumni, parents and students play as “recruiters” for Notre Dame High School and the “Notre Dame experience”. Please spread the word and encourage families you know who may have prospective students to contact us in order to "Discover the Difference" that a Notre Dame education and the overall Notre Dame Experience makes! Our spring 2015 Open House for prospective students for 2015-2016 will be held on Sunday, April 19, 2015 from 2 – 4 p.m. here at ND! We remain proud of the academic, extracurricular, interscholastic athletic and community service records that our current students – and alumni - have achieved at ND. Continue to encourage your student to do his or her very best on a daily basis! Hard work pays off! ND Pride is Contagious – Catch it!!! Welcome, Mrs. Antinore! A warm word of welcome goes out to Mrs. Kathy Antinore who joined the ND Family as our Advancement/Business Office Support Person on Monday, January 5, 2015. Mrs. Antinore and her husband Tom reside in Batavia and have two sons – Tyler aged 21 and Ryan aged 16, a current member of the ND Class of 2017. Prior to coming to ND, Mrs. Antinore served as the Marketing Director at P.W. Minor and also as a Brand Manager for Constellation Brands. Mrs. Antinore is currently working behindthe-scenes in support of our 23rd Annual ND Foundation Trip Night in addition to her daily duties in the Advancement and Business Offices. She will also serve as the point person for alumni who are planning class reunions and can be contacted at [email protected] or [585] 343-2783 Ext. 144. Make it a point to stop by our Advancement Office to meet and greet Mrs. Antinore when you are at school. This drive is open to all students (16+), faculty and the public. The increase in flu cases this winter has left the blood supply low! As there is no substitute for blood, donors are needed. Please consider giving the gift of life. Appointments are available beginning at 8:30 am – 1:30 pm. Contact Mrs. Riter at extension 141 or by email at [email protected] to set a time. Kick Butts Day 2015 Stand Out*Speak Up*Seize Control ND SADD has participated in Kick Butts day for the last 2 years, bringing an awareness campaign to the school that highlights the impact of tobacco products on public health. This year we will focus efforts on increasing information regarding nicotine addiction and the rise in use of e-cigs and “vapes”. Watch for our posters around the school in March. New Mental Health and Crisis Hotline For many years, Genesee County and surrounding areas have accessed the RAP Line for any crisis or referral needs. The RAP line is still in existence at 343-1212. The YWCA has started a new local hotline – CARE + CRISIS HELPLINE – 344-4400. This helpline is available to any of our students and families, 24/7, and can be reached at a toll free # as well – 1-844-345-4400. Listeners are available to assist with issues ranging from bullying, anxiety, depression and sexual assault. Regional Action Phone (RAP) and GCASA have teamed up to establish the Tipline—a prevention and intervention safety net for young people in Genesee and Orleans Counties. Concerned adults, teachers, students and friends now have a place to call 24 hours a day to report underage drinking parties or other activities that are harmful to the health, safety and/or welfare of young people. The Tipline is anonymous, confidential and free. By calling 343-1932 or 1-800-851-1932 and providing basic information a difference can be made, tragedy diverted and lives saved. Her ultimate goal has been to compete in the world’s biggest dog show – Crufts - which this year is located in Birmingham, England. In order to eventually reach this lofty goal, she needed to win the AKC [American Kennel Club]/Eukanuba National Championship Best Junior Handler Competition which was held during December in Orlando, Florida. Participation in the AKC show is by invitation only. To qualify, junior handlers had to have mustered five wins against competition during a qualifying period as well as have a minimum 3.0 academic average in school. Lauren’s 8 years of hard work enabled her to achieve her lofty goal of winning the National Junior Handler Competition last month and achieving her lifelong dream of representing the United States in the upcoming world competition in England in March! The daughter of Charles and Denise Hull of Le Roy, Lauren had to survive 3 rounds of preliminaries just to make it to the finals! She received a $2,000 scholarship from Eukanuba, a rosette and silver plate from AKC, a pink grooming box from East Coast crates and a diamond pin from 14K-9 jewelry as part of her championship recognition. Her name and that of her Irish setter, Kent [Red Ridge’s Kent Irish Fire] will be engraved on a permanent trophy housed at the AKC library in Raleigh, North Carolina. Lauren is a high honor roll student at ND and a member of Mater Dei, our school yearbook; Varsity Football and Basketball Cheerleading; and Chorus. She has also qualified for the upcoming All County Vocal Solo Festival. Outside of school, she enjoys horse riding. We wish Lauren the best of luck during her competition in the Crufts world championship of dog handling in early March! Stay tuned to future editions of the ND online newsletter to learn more about Lauren’s experiences at the world competition! The student recruiters are responsible for spreading the word on American high schools to prospective families and students currently in the People’s Republic of China. They specifically recruit for the Orlando, Florida based company Three W International, the parent organization for our four international students currently at ND. Photos taken prior to Christmas recess included one of our current international students - Daniel Liu ‘17 (right) and another with 3 current ND seniors: Emily McCracken, Taylor Perzia and Marin Reinhart. (below). The recruiters were given a tour of ND by Principal Dr. Joseph Scanlan ’65 and International Student Assistant and Guidance Secretary Mrs. Karen Rapone. They had a chance to meet ND students and faculty along the way! Page 18 POND and Trip Night Supporters: We are so very excited because of all the fun we are planning for Trip Night and all of POND’s activities! The January POND meeting was dedicated to ripping tickets for trip night and planning our teacher appreciation activities, fundraisers for POND, and a social night! For Trip Night, we have wonderful trips to Jamaica, Las Vegas, Saratoga Springs, and so many other locations! This year Trip Night is back at Batavia Downs in the new and very beautiful Paddock Room! Jimi Jamm, or Frank Collins ‘87 as he was called when he was a Notre Dame star, will be our emcee for the evening with great music and entertainment by Digitill Entertainment! Our wine wagon raffle is back but with a twist! This year, it is a “virtual” wine and specialty beer wagon! Because of New York State Law, we cannot bring this huge wagon with wine and beer onto the premises, but you will still be able to get a chance to win all the contents of this very sizable wagon, and it will be delivered right to your door (within 50 miles of Notre Dame)! Of course our Lottery vest is back as it made a great hit last year! There is also still time to volunteer and help make this night special and this is what we are looking for from our supporters: Wine donations. We will take donations of wine up until the day of the event. We cannot accept them at Notre Dame, but you can get them to us in a number of ways. First, they can be dropped off at the Crickler Building (former Pepsi Bottling Plant) on Main Street in Batavia, inside the front door there will be a box. Or, you can ask for John Houseknecht at the Crickler Building or Joe Forsyth at Bonadio. You can also simply call Anita Strollo at (585) 813-5371 to arrange for pick up! Thank you in advance! Lottery ticket donations: We are asking that supporters and parents donate at least $5 of lottery tickets to be raffled off that night! These can be sent to the school in an envelope marked “lottery tickets”! Again, thank you for your help. Lastly, if you volunteered to help for Trip Night, there will be two general meetings in the next two weeks, January 29 at 6:30 at Notre Dame and February 9, same time, same place. There will be a set up night on Friday night from 5-8 pm and this year there will be no Saturday set up! There will be shifts from 5:30 pm - 8pm and 7:30 pm – 10 pm. You will be getting a call or email if you added your name to the volunteer list! Thank you again for your help! Above all, thank you for making POND and Trip Night fun! That is ultimately what this experience is all about, to have fun and do something good with good people for a good cause!! Go IRISH and thank you all in advance! None of this could happen without you!
