Sussex Inlet Public School had 27 newcomers last week which is not quite a record but getting close to it. There are two classes called KH and
K1M with Mrs. Hickman and Mrs. Murphy being the two teachers. It is wonderful to see the growth of Sussex Inlet through the school system. Not
all Kindy children could be present for the group photo for various reasons. Any one wanting photos they are available from the Inletter office.

We have decided to do some specials in the
salon each month and will be donating a
certain amount of money from these specials
to the Sussex Inlet Cancer Support Group.
They have been a great help to our family
over the past few months as well as other
families dealing with cancer and we would
like to give something back to them. Each
month we will have a different special, and if
you want your hair to look great for a little
less, as well as helping out a great cause then
this is the perfect opportunity.
New specials every month!
February's special:
Clipper head shaves $15 with $5 from each
one going to the Cancer Support Group.
Call me on 44411903 if you're interested.
Alana.
Due to so few people turning up it was
decided to hold the A.G.M. later in the year.
We had a letter from Brooke Russell,
Diabetes N.S.W. They will be there at the
next meeting, doing tests for blood, blood
pressure etc.
This will happen while we hold our meeting.
If anyone wants testing I am sure they will
come back another time.
Remember if you want a diabetic group in
Sussex Inlet you must support it.
I know it clashes with bingo. But is one
Friday a month going to hurt anyone.
High blood sugar can affect you in so many
ways. Eye's, kidneys, tiredness to name a
few. You can be amongst people in the same
condition as yourself
It does help. Some people think it is nothing
to worry about, but believe me in the long
run you have to take some responsibility for
your own health.
We will be having a B.B.Q. in March. I will
tell you about it at the next meeting February
27th. It is always the 4th Friday in the month
at 9.30am.
It would be lovely to see a lot of people turn
up.

Customer Service Officer Brittney
Hardman has been nominated for the
award as a result of her commitment
to meet the customer’s needs through
relevant financial conversations and
meaningful advice. The award is a
National Award and the winner would
be invited to Bendigo to dine with the
Directors of the Bank.
I would like to thank the generosity of the
people of Sussex Inlet for their donations of
clothing over the past two years, they are
very appreciated when the children get them.
This year we are collecting tracksuits for 3 to
5 year olds. They do not have to be new,
good clean second hand ones are very
welcome.
If any one would like to help please ring
Dianne on 44412506. I am only too happy to
pick up.
Since my visit nearly two years ago we have
sent two boxes of clothing. It is a good
feeling to know you are helping some people
who are not as fortunate as we are .

When you have something tailor made you know it’s going to last you a long time. Just
like the 55 years Mervyn and June Taylor have been married on 6th February 2015.
This is extra special for Merv because it is his birthday as well. They were married in
Bowral and ran a very successful mechanical service at Moss Vale for 30 years.
After holidaying in Sussex Inlet for about 40 years they retired and moved here 17 years
ago. Their son is Assistant Headmaster at Tumut High and their daughter is teaching in
New York State, USA. They have two beautiful grandchildren Aby and Max.
The Inletter would like to wish Merv and June a very happy anniversary
and Merv a happy 80th birthday.

Hi everyone,
With a smorgasbord of sporting events to
choose from last weekend, all sports lovers
had their fill.
Wasn’t it a great achievement for the
Socceroos to win the Asian Cup for the very
first time. I know I for one had trouble
getting to sleep on Saturday night after
sitting on the edge of my seat during this
great game. I thought we had won it until
South Korea scored in injury time and then
had to sit through another 30 minutes to
finally get the win.
Till next week

Winner of the Men’s Shed ‘Name The
Kangaroo’ was Amy Padmore from
Caringbah. Amy was holidaying in Sussex
Inlet with her brother Maxwell and her
parents who own a holiday cottage in Sussex
Inlet. Amy thought hard and long for a
suitable name for the Kangaroo and after
some serious research came up with
‘GAROOA’. I am told that means ‘land by
sea’ in the aboriginal language. Marty Howes
presented Amy with her trophy and medal at
her Sussex Inlet home.

Mustard Chicken
The Management Committee of the Sussex
Inlet Men’s Shed would like to publicly
thank everyone who assisted with our
Australia Day Weekend Family Fun Day.
Without your assistance and participation the
day would not have been the success it was.
Although very hot we managed to keep
everyone entertained during the six hour
program of Fun, Music, Demonstrations
Games, Car Show exhibition, pet shows,
stalls and of course our “Monster Ball Drop”
A special thank you must go to our major
sponsor the BENDIGO BANK for their
continued support for this community event.
Their support along with the Chamber Of
Commerce enabled us to promote Sussex
Inlet and our event over the radio throughout
the Shoalhaven and Highlands through 2ST
for the two weeks prior to the event.
Sponsors and supporters included Real
Property Agents, Berrara Beach Holiday
Cabins, Shannon’s Insurance, Sussex Inlet
Mechanical Services, Sussex Inlet Bowling
Club and Thingamabobs, Crooked River
Wines, Raine & Horne, Kennedy & Cook,
RSL Club (ice) and SI Bowling Club who
allowed us to sell balls in the entrance of
their club.
These businesses provided support for the
day so in turn, as community members we
should support them because if we don’t have
a viable business sector we don’t have a
viable township.
We came up with the idea of a monster ball
drop as something different so when our
President Roger Walker asked for assistance
from QUALITY CRANES of NOWRA they
were willing to assist us. Getting the crane to
Sussex Inlet was not easy as it was not
allowed by law to travel at weekends because
of it’s size so arrived in Sussex on the Friday
and left on the Tuesday morning.
The Sussex Inletter - where would all
organisations be without the support given by
the CTC in promoting events during the year.
Thank You Wilga and your Committee.
To the volunteers who assisted the Men’s
Shed with the running of the day, we couldn’t
have done it without your support plus it
made it a real community effort.
There are others that need recognition for
their support and helpTodd Barkley who again stepped up to the
mark and acted as our MC for the day.
Wandandian Timber Mill for supplying the
timber to mount the floor for the dancers to
perform.
To those members and assistants preparing
and selling food you did us proud, the ladies,
volunteers and men’s shed wives who
provided the Devonshire teas, Rotary, Lions,
Friends of Inasmuch, Cancer Support Group
Sussex Inlet Golf Club members, Footy Club,
great to see some young people assisting and
the tennis ladies but not to be forgotten the
men from the shed who have worked hard for
over 6 months to bring the day to fruition led
by our President Roger, Australia Day Sec.
Keith Haslem and Men’s Shed Secretary
Kevin. The numbering of nearly 2000 balls
by David J was mammoth task. The day
would not have been such a success as it was
without the help of volunteer Kerry Howes
who stepped in to be our coordinator as Keith
was attending a wedding in South Australia.
We would like to thank the community for
embracing the selling of tickets for
purchasing food items. This was different
from previous times and it assisted us with
hygiene and having a volunteer on each food
stall to handle the money.
The entertainment provided by Pirates,
Sirenics, Darcy Layear, High Tides Group,
Ukulele Group, Line Dancers, Bliss Belly
dancers, Irish dancers and Natalie Henderson
were great with non-stop music for approx. 6
hours.
Demonstrations by Ulladulla/Milton dog
obedience and the pet show conducted by
Sussex Inlet Vet.
The 80+ cars provided something for the Rev
Heads. What a great show.
David J with his volunteers Kay and Jean
conducted races and games in what some
would describe extreme heat with the
children enjoying the races, tug-o-war, mop
and thong throwing by mums and dads.
Finally you the community Thank You for
supporting us and for coming along to enjoy,
and celebrate Australia Day with us.
SHELLEY HANCOCK was with us and we
asked her to be the official judge for the
monster ball drop. A great supporter of the
Men’s Shed.

Government Rd Hazard Reduction
Postponed
Unfortunately due to the inclement weather
these last few weeks we have had to
postpone this hazard reduction. Basically the
ground is just too damp to let us successfully

However it is still high on the brigade’s
agenda and when conditions improve we will

We apologize for any inconvenience caused
by this delay.
Bush Fire Survival Plan
It may be February but did you know the
normal bush fire danger period runs until the
end of March? Despite the recent rain some
areas have received, it's still summer so now
is still a good time to make your Bush Fire
Survival Plan.
A Bush Fire Survival Plan can help you
make important decisions about what to do
during a fire - like when to leave, what to
take and what to do with animals. Fact is
many people have died during bush fires
because they've left their decisions to the last
moment.
Ask yourself these questions:
Do you live within a few streets of the
bush?
You don't need to live right on the bush to be
at risk from bush fires. Burning embers can
travel some distance, setting to fire to homes
that are well away from the bush. In fact, the
majority of homes destroyed in bush fires are
because of what's called "ember attack".
Does your area have a history of bush
fires?
Think about the area you live in. If fires have
happened there before, they will almost
certainly happen again. Know the fire risk in
10
your area and prepare for it.
Do you have many trees or shrubs around
your home?
It's a fact that a well prepared property is
more likely to survive a bush fire. A well
prepared property includes trees and shrubs
that have been trimmed, and a cleared area
where you and firefighters can protect your
home if needed.
If you need to leave your home, would you
need to travel through bushland?
If you need to travel through bush land areas
to leave your home, you're at risk of being
caught in a fire. Being caught in the open or
in a car are among the most dangerous places
during a bush fire.
Is your Bush Fire Survival Plan more than
one year old?
Even if you've made a Plan before, check it
and update it if needed. Sit down and talk
about your plan with your family. That way,
everyone will know what to do if a fire starts.
Make You’re Bush Fire Survival Plan now
If you answered yes to any of these
questions, you need a Bush Fire Survival
Plan. Planning to make a plan is not a plan.
Making your Bush Fire Survival Plan is
probably easier than you think. Sit down and
talk about it with your family so everyone
knows what to do if a fire happens.
Even better - download our Bush Fire
Survival Plan guide or our MyFirePlan
smartphone application now it’s free from…

Last Sunday, 1st February, was our monthly
meeting. We had 42 members in
attendance, 1 visitor and 10 apologies. It
was great to see Penny in attendance at the
meeting and hopefully will continue as at
present. Vince Lindsay was also in
attendance prior to his moving back to
Sydney, we hope this is not his last
meeting with us.
Our Welfare Officer, Neil, has had a quiet
month ending with a visit to hospital for a
major operation. Get better soon. He has
also farewelled a son who joined the SDF
last month. Our Pensions Officer, Stan,
also had a quiet month with just a number
of enquires, he has been busy with family
matters. The only information that I could
gleam from the bowls report was that they
will gain 5 new members shortly, good to
see the growth.
The Tasman Club held their elections and
there is no change with Chris Back still the
coordinator.
A number of further items were raised
including: new member James Smith was
present to receive his membership card. A
new member was approved, Alan
Littlewood ex-Army. Arthur White
proposed changes to the Dawn Service and
after discussion this was accepted with
some fine tuning to be done. We are lucky
to have as a member WO1 Melville
Frampton who was recently the Warrant
Officer Ceremonial of the Australian
Army. Mel is giving us advice as to correct
procedures with our ceremonies etc. Expect
to see some changes.
Despite previous advice Ray Sharpe is not
going to hospital at this stage. The display
cabinet in the sub-branch Hall has now been
revamped and everyone is encouraged to
visit the hall.
There is an ANZAC Race Day at the Nowra
race course 14th April and the sub-Branch has
booked 30 seats in the dining area, cost will
be $35 including 3 course lunch, race book
and transport from Sussex Inlet to the track
and return. For bookings and more
information contact the office.
Final work on the War Memorial and
memorial wall at the RSL Club will
commence this week with the removal of the
plaques. These will be numbered so that they
can be replaced in the correct sequence. The
modifications to the wall will commence mid
-February so all will be in order for ANZAC
Day. The area will be cordoned off while the
work is in progress.
Our raffle was won by myself and once more
donated the prize back to the sub-Branch.
Our volunteer hours for last month were 335
hours.
Next month will be the AGM so please think
about standing for a committee position.
New ideas are needed. The AGM will be
preceded by our normal remembrance
service at 1000hrs on 1st March 2015.

Member for South Coast Shelley Hancock
today called for applications for the 2015-16
round of funding to assist local councils to
carry out coastal and estuary management
projects, helping them plan, manage and
protect their coasts and estuaries.
Applications are being sought for grants
from the Coastal Management Program and
Estuary Management Program.
“Last year the NSW Government allocated
around $3.2 million from the 2014-15 round
of the two grants programs for 48 new
projects,” Mrs Hancock said.
“The Office of Environment and Heritage is
now accepting applications from councils for
financial assistance under the Estuary and
Coastal Management Programs for the 201516 financial year.”
“The Coastal Management Program assists
local councils in managing risks from coastal
hazards such as coastal erosion and to restore
degraded coastal environments.
“The Estuary Management Program provides
assistance to councils in improving the health
of the State’s estuaries.”
NSW Environment Minister Rob Stokes said
the coming year was an important year for
the State’s coasts and estuaries.
“Late last year the NSW Government
announced it’s far reaching reforms to
coastal management,” Mr Stokes said.
“Our plans are for a new Coastal
Management Act, which is less complex and
more integrated with other planning and land
use laws.
“We’re also developing new arrangements to
better support council decision making and a
new approach to the funding and financing
coastal management actions.
“Our coastline is coming under immense
pressure and these coastal reforms and our
financial support through the Coastal
Management and Estuary Management
programs will assist councils and
communities to sustainably manage their
estuaries and coasts into the future.”
Emails including links to application forms
and guidelines have been sent to Councils.
Further information and application forms
are also available on the Office of
Environment and Heritage website at:
http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/
grantsandfunding/
Both grants programs are competitive and it
is important that applicants follow the
guidelines.
Applications must be received by 5pm 12
March 2015
Gilmore MP Ann Sudmalis has today
thanked Qantas for their generous decision to
gift the airline’s first ever Boeing 747-400 to
the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society
(HARS) at Albion Park, saying that the
aircraft will be a major tourism asset for the
region.
The 747 aircraft ‘City of Canberra’, which
currently holds the record for the longest
ever non-stop commercial flight (London to
Sydney direct in 1989), is expected to make
the 10 minute journey from Sydney
International Airport to Albion Park
Regional Airport in March.
“While HARS already has the largest
collection of historic aircraft in Australia, the
addition of one of the world’s biggest jumbo
jets will dwarf many of the existing historical
aircraft at their Albion Park base such as the
Douglas DC-3 and DC-4, as well as ‘Connie’
the Lockheed Super Constellation,” Mrs
Sudmalis said.
“With the Navy’s Fleet Air Arm and the
Fleet Air Arm Museum also located nearby
in Nowra, this announcement has the
potential to turn our region into a major
aviation tourism destination!
“In Longreach Queensland, where Qantas
has in the past donated an earlier version of .
the 747 jet, visitors can actually take part in a
rare 747 ‘wing walk’, which is a major
tourist attraction bringing in visitors from
across Australia and overseas.
“Whilst Longreach is over 1000kms from
Brisbane, Albion Park is just a leisurely
hour’s drive from Sydney, so the possibility
of such an attraction right here in the
Illawarra is very exciting.
“Combined with the amazing Fleet Air Arm
Museum near Nowra, this announcement
advertises the Illawarra and South Coast to
yet another tourist market – great news for
our local region.
“The Fleet Air Arm Museum near Nowra is
open seven days a week, 360 days a year,
and boasts a 6,000 m2, two-storey exhibition
centre, souvenir shop, function centre,
theatre and airfield viewing platform. It’s an
easy addition to any trip to HARS from
Sydney.
“Once again, I’d like to thank Qantas for this
generous donation, and I look forward to
seeing the Queen of the Sky take up
residence in the Illawarra in March.
“With this new attention from Qantas in the
region, I also hope this announcement could
be a hint of Qantas services returning to the
Illawarra,” Mrs Sudmalis concluded

Member for South Coast Shelley Hancock
today welcomed a decision by the Baird
Government granting more protection to
local South Coast newsagents,
Mrs Hancock said newsagents have been
secured as the primary outlets for the sale of
lotteries products in a deal brokered between
the Tatts Group and the NSW Government.
A Memorandum of Understanding has been
agreed by both parties, ensuring newsagents
remain the major outlets for lottery sales
while a deal on a franchise agreement
between the parties can be reached.
Under the agreement that has been signed:
Tatts Group will undertake not to expand the
network of franchises into supermarket
chains for three years from April 1 2015 to
March 31 2018;
The NSW Government will provide support
to the existing network of franchises to
update their point of sale shop fitting to the
standard required by Tatts under the
franchise agreement.
The NSW Government will introduce a
dedicated
$15
million
Newsagents
Assistance Fund, allowing agents who
require assistance with upgrading shop fitouts and diversifying their businesses to be
supported.
The Fund will mean existing lottery agents
can apply for contributions of up to $10,000
for approved shop re-fits for the point of sale
of lotteries products, while being given an
additional three year extension of protections
to remain competitive in the lottery
marketplace.
“This package will protect local South Coast
newsagents for a further three years and
allow them to transform their businesses,”
Mrs Hancock said.
“Concerns were raised about the viability of
small newsagents to undertake major shop re
-fits. The Baird Government has been
working methodically with newsagents, the
Tatts Group and local operators on the
ground to reach a sensible outcome that
supports small business while protecting
taxpayers from the risk of compensation.

It was with great sadness that the Beal family
said farewell on January 21st to our beloved
Norma, aged 92, late of River Road in
Badgee.
Norma lived independently at home until last
year, when ill health required her to move
into nursing care at Inasmuch Lifestyle
Village.
We would like to take this opportunity to
sincerely thank the staff and residents of
Inasmuch Lifestyle Village for the care and
friendship they showed to Norma and to all
of us, during her period there. They went
above and beyond to ensure Norma’s
comfort and to assist us in caring for her in
her last months and days.
The staff at Inasmuch are professional,
thoughtful and caring and we owe them a
debt of gratitude.
Words cannot truly express how much it
meant to us to have the support of such a
wonderful group of people during this
difficult time.

NEWS
What a busy few weeks it’s been. We have
given over 9 dogs to wonderful new
homes. I can’t tell you how amazing it feels
to see dogs that were on death row a few
weeks ago in concrete kennels running free
and being loved. That’s what keeps me
going. Rescue is tough, heartbreaking, and
very emotional most of the time.
Zep and Petey are now living on a farm at
Wandandian. I went for a visit the other day
to see them. I was greeted with big hugs with
sloppy kisses. Their new mum and dad love
them to bits.
I have one little man looking for his
forever home. His name is Moe.
Moe is the perfect dog for a family. He loves
children, other dogs, good with farm animals.
He’s a gentle little soul.
His foster mum said he is the perfect
companion. Moe is a Bull Arab cross.
He has all his vet work done. Moe is 11
month old. Just a baby.
I would like to thank two amazing young
boys who live in Sydney who donated their
pocket money to the vets for the dogs. They
raised nearly 40 dollars from selling their
toys. It’s so beautiful to see children with
such empathy and love for animals.
BIG thanks to Thingamabobs and Pelican
Inlet Fashions for their continual support.
The chip in boxes raised an amazing $150
from Thingamabobs and $70 from Pelican.
These boxes are taken to the vets when they
are full for help with vet bills for the rescues.
Thanks to the lovely folks who have donated
blankets. We have enough at the moment.

The Youth Showcase Market, which will be

Tuesday’s training session was cancelled
once again because of a combination of
weather conditions and no available sweep.
On Thursday Michael from Nowra Water
Dragons gave a crew of 11 in “Dragonfly” a
final workout under quite gusty conditions
which tested the trainee sweep as well as the
paddlers. Michael’s participation was part of
his coaching accreditation requirements and
his visits to Sussex have been most
beneficial to all concerned. Thank you
Michael.
On Saturday morning, under somewhat
overcast but otherwise perfect conditions on
the water, a crew of 17 took “Dragonheart”
up river towards the Basin with Vince
steering and John coaching. After putting
the boat away, all adjourned to Jopen for
lunch to say “Au revoir” to Susan and Vince,
who wish to thank all the Riverdragons for
their friendship ever since they joined the
club as “newbies” over three years ago.
For all readers who may be wondering what
Dragonboats are all about, come and find out
at our training sessions on Tuesdays and
Thursdays at 3.30pm and Saturdays at
9.15am, meeting at the Fishermen’s BBQ
Shed. Be assured that you will be most
welcome. You don’t need to be particularly
fit or skilled at paddling, as you will be
coached gently and encouraged to improve
your fitness levels while having fun in great
company on the beautiful waters of Sussex
Inlet. PLEASE COME AND GIVE IT A

24th and 31st January – Sussex hosted the
match against Batemans Bay. Batemans Bay
won the toss and elected to bat.
Returning players Geoff Benning, Nathan
Dobeson, Clint Hedges and Aaron Piendl led
the way with their bowling and fielding
helping Sussex to dismiss the visitors for just
56 runs. Benning ended up with a stunning ‘5
-fer’ (8/2/5/14) and a catch, Aaron (3/0/1/6)
took a wicket and a catch, Dobbo helped
himself to 3 catches and Clint took one catch
(that counted). The most spectacular catch
was unfortunately the one that didn’t count
when the ball ricocheted off the keeper and
Clint ran around to take the catch only to find
that the ‘nick’ had come from the batsman’s
arm. Regular players Jason Hornitzky
claimed 3 wickets (6/1/3/7) and Robbie
McDonagh chipped in with the final wicket
(2.5/0/1/5) of the innings. Jake Westley
(8/3/0/10), Jamie Mulholland (6/3/0/10) and
Geoff Webber (5/2/0/4) were all economical.
Jake and Dale Jarrett also claimed 1 catch apiece. Geoff Benning’s ‘5-fer’ was the first 5
wicket haul by a Sussex bowler for the
season, and the fourth ‘5-fer’ for Geoff in the
last 4 seasons.
In reply, Sussex had put on more than half
the Bay’s total before Dave Goodwin (19
incl. 2x4) was adjudged LBW (1/32). Jason
(18 incl. 1x4) was next to go when he was
caught (2/54). Geoff Webber (7) was caught
6 runs later and Sussex was 4/67 when
Robbie (2) followed suit. Dobbo and Jake
added 27 runs to the total before Jake (8 incl.
1x4) was caught (5/94). With the first
innings in the bag, Dobbo and Dale put on a
great batting display for the spectators.
Dobbo remained not out 71 and Dale not out
34 at stumps on day 1 (Sussex 5/191). On
day 2, the pair took their 6th wicket
partnership to 105 runs before Nathan was
caught. His dashing 75 runs included 8 fours
and 2 sixes. Clint worked well with Dale to
see Dale reach his first 50 of the season. The
pair added 43 runs for the 7th wicket before
Clint was caught for 18 runs. Jamie added 3
before he was bowled and Sussex declared
on 8/245. Dale remained not out with a wellearned 62 runs that included 2 boundaries
and 1 six.
Sussex was hoping for an early end to the
match but Bateman’s Bay had other plans.
The young players dug their heels in to deny
Sussex an outright win. Robbie got the first
breakthrough just before afternoon tea. He
was still apologizing to his team for bowling
a bad ball as Jake took the catch. Geoff
Benning claimed the wicket of the other
opener with a catch to Jason. The next
breakthrough came when the number 3
batsman was adjudged LBW to Geoff
Benning. Kyle claimed the final wicket of
the day with another good catch to Clint. The
Bay continued to dig its heels in and was
4/128 at stumps. The bowling figures were
tight and a record 22 maiden overs were
bowled. Benning bowled 13/2/2/17, Kyle
bowled 6 maidens with 12/6/1/16, Jason
18
Geoff Benning - 1st 5 wicket haul for
Sussex for 2015 season
bowled 4 maidens with 8/4/0/9, Jake ended
with 8/2/0/22 (with a calf injury), Robbie
bowled 10/3/1/21, Clint bowled 5/1/0/5,
Jamie bowled 4 maidens with 9/4/0/18 and
Aaron bowled 5/0/0/10. Sussex won the
match on first innings. Thank you to Nathan
Dobeson, Clint Hedges and Aaron Piendl for
standing in for the match and to Riley Jarrett
for subbing.

The weather yet again was not on our side.
Saturday's race was called off due to strong
winds. We did manage a sail on Sunday and
the winner was Tom. Tom also managed to
check on FREDDO whose mast had fallen
down during the race and still win. Good
work Tom. Our Australia Day Race had good
wind, even though it was a bit rainy and
slightly chilly. Winter wetsuits were the go
for this race. A big congrats to Jeff sailing
HAVOC who has won this race for the
second year in a row.

Lic. No. 11743C
29th January 2015—A gusty southerly wind
brought an unseasonally cold start to the
morning and had all the old boys well rugged
up for the early morning hit out. The “Brains
Trust” made a bit of blunder with the head
count and set the boys off to the first tee to
play a two person Ambrose only to discover
there were 21 and not 20 old boys in
attendance. The unlucky bloke to be
overlooked was “Speedy” Crewdson. As the
score cards had already been prepared and as
no one wanted him as a partner due to his
small handicap (1) he played with the first
group of “Yogi” and “Filthy” who were thus
ineligible for the team prize. “Speedy” was
over the moon with this decision as he did
not want to be in contention for the days top
prize and the possibility of moving to a zero
handicap. The winning team today with a
nett score of 31½ were Ron “Terracotta”
Clay and his partner “The Mushroom”.
Runners up with a nett score of 33¾ were
Barry “ Smoking Joe” Frazer and Neil “Last
Post”. In third place were Brian “Bonsai”
Harbrow and his partner Steve “Frosty”
Newlan with a nett score of 35¼. The drive
off the first which was closest to the flag
went to Graeme “Mac” Dobell. The nearest
the pin on the drive and pitch 2nd went to Ian
“Farmer” Ballantyne who also secured the
nearest the pin on the drive and pitch 9th.
“Speedy” won the ball for the nearest the pin
on the drive and pitch 3rd and Dave “Yogi”
Ball won the nearest the pin on the 4th.
“Terracotta” secured the nearest the pin on
the fifth and was a bit unlucky not to hole out
with the tee shot finishing only a foot and
half from the hole. “ The Mushroom” took
out the nearest the pin on the drive and pitch
6th and also the 8th with a birdie. The final
ball was won by Bob “Filthy” Rich for his
shot on the 7th.
The January monthly awards were also
presented which is calculated on points
accumulated over each of the weekly events
of the month and this saw “Smoking Joe”
take out the top prize on a countback over
“Bonsai” with Glen “Ferret” Ferrier in third
place. As it was the last play day of the
month the lads finished the day with a BBQ
lunch and our thanks to “Filthy” and an
injured John “Louie the Fly” Lewis for
cooking up a storm. Finally once again we
acknowledge the generosity of all nine of our
hole sponsors.
Till next time – keep swinging,
The Mushroom.

RESULTS 24 Jan 2015 - 30 Jan 2015
Garry Miskell was our top point-scorer this
week after compiling 22 Stableford points
during his round with the Friday Skins.
Garry was grinning not just from winning a
couple of skins, but because of his shiny
brand new blue car.
Ron Gann was fine tuning his game for the
Shoalhaven Shield and he did tell me what
he was doing differently, but as usual I was
only pretending to listen. I wish I had paid
more attention as he won the next tasty bird
from JB’s Chicken Diner with 21 points after
a very consistent round.
Steve Newlan also picked up a succulent
rooster with 21 points. Steve is another
Friday morning player and goes around with
a few heavyweights on most Fridays. In fact,
all our chooks this week went to players on
Friday, due mainly to the midweek rain.
Big Phil Bell is another Friday Skins player
and he picked up a rare cooked chook from
Brenda and John with his 20 points. No luck
with the skins, but I’m sure Pamela will be
happy to have a night off cooking duties.
Phil Carter was another player to win a JB’s
bird with 20 points. This score hasn’t even
been close to winning lately, but all on 20
picked up a bird except for Anne Lawler who
missed on the count-back.
I had to twist Pat Watson’s arm to go back to
the 17th tee to hit another ball after his first
tee shot disappeared into a ball eating plant
next to a tree. Lucky for him he did as that
point he picked up on that hole gave him the
last chook with 20 points.

Last Sunday the members enjoyed great
conditions for golf. Sunshine and little
wind greeted 36 players in the morning as
they took to the course for a Single
Stableford. The winner of the day was
Dean Stanwell with a score of 37 points on
a countback from Derek Woodward. The
second runner up was our valued sponsor
Peter Looby on a countback with 36 points.
No one won the money from Fred Paine
with a birdie on the 1st or 3rd hole. The
Nearest the Pins were Gary Thompson on
the Badgee Park sponsored 5th and the
Butch Harding 7th went to Derek
Woodward. There was no winner for the
Crows nest on the 5th sponsored by Mark
Watler. Dean Stanwell scored on the
NRMA 9th and Nigel Watler won the
REAL Property Agents 14th. Geoff
Fountain won the Laurie Vincent sponsored
16th. The Drive and Chip on the 13th
Division 1 is sponsored by Geoff Fountain
and was won by Geoff Fountain. Pat
Watson was the winner in Division 2
though Division 3 which is also sponsored
by the Badgee Park Boys wasn’t won. The
Division 1 Long Drive on the 15th is
sponsored by The Sussex Bottler and Dean
Stanwell won this while Ross Crewdson
took out Division 2 sponsored by Laguna
Lodge and Matt Monsuere won Division 3
which is sponsored by the President
Stephen Lloyd and the Captain Peter
Paterson. The Ball Rundown is as follows,
Arthur Law 36, Garry Miskell 35, Matt
Monsuere and Alan Neems 34, Nigel
Watler 33 and Bruno Barrett, Geoff
Fountain and Ivan Webber with 32 points.
Please note that next Sunday, February 8th,
the White Horse Cup teams will be here so
the members will play a Single Stableford
(18 Holes) with the first tee time being
10.30am. The February Medal will be on
the following Sunday the 15th.

We had 21 intrepid players who weren't
going to let a little bit of wet stuff put them
off their Wednesday Medley of 9 holes, a
Stableford event on the back 9. Of course
we were not all as chipper when we finished
and were a little bit soggy despite all the wet
weather gear. Scores were a bit low and
reflected the tough conditions out on the
course.
Winner - Bob Bensley, 18 pts; Runner up Pam Forbes, 15 c/b.
Nearest the Pins - (13th) J. Bensley; (14th)
R. Whittaker; B. Bensley; (16th) J. Hitchen;
B. Bensley (obviously enjoying a purple
patch at the moment Bobbie).

Thanks to our Starters Chris and Judy and on
Cards, Pat and Ann.
We enjoyed a lovely day in slightly drier
conditions (the heat was the problem!) on the
Australia Day Weekend when
Captain
Grumpy - er I mean our much loved Captain
Peter Paterson invited the ladies to join the
gents for a 4 person Ambrose. The BBQ
lunch that was provided was worth all the
suffering out on the golf course, it was just
delicious. Daphne and Kaye were their usual
brilliant selves at the BBQ (even hotter there
than out on the course) and J.B.'s Chicken
Diner supplied the salads - they were
delicious. I might add that the potato bake
was the yummiest I've ever had (sorry Elva!)
and once again Melanie's lamington cup
cakes were the perfect end to lunch.
This was a great way to celebrate our good
fortune to live and play in the lucky country
and we do appreciate Peter's efforts to
include us in the (men's) Sunday game - we
always enjoy it - thanks guys.

AUSTRALIA DAY BOWLS
With Australian flags flying
from the flagpoles of the
RSL Club and the RSL
Bowling Club it felt good to be Australian. A
great day of bowls for those who played.
With only 4 rinks of mixed bowlers it was
disappointing to say the least to the
committee to see such low numbers for this
great day. Not all turned up who had their
name down to play. Fifteen ends were played
in the morning with some serious tussles
going on between the leads and the seconds
which was all good experience for the
upcoming Pennants series. The morning
session was followed by a superbly prepared
lunch of Aussie Hamburgers and salad by
Max and his crew. Maureen looked after the
refreshments and RCB even had a game in
the afternoon. Play was abandoned and mats
withdrawn during the afternoon game after
10 ends as a fine mist of rain spoilt the day.
All ‘prize money’ will be carried over to the
next Australia Day game
Wednesday 28th Social Bowls.
Couldn’t get a game anywhere today due to
the heavy precipitation that seemed to be
hovering over the South Coast.
Friday 30th. The rain held off so we could
have our usual Friday morning roll up. Max
was reported missing and so the master chefs
took over and put together some oven roasted
beans and spaghetti on toast for the 30
bowlers. Only one SCOTI to report and it
was a rare one from JV. Raffle Loot went to
Bob Selby, Argus Tuft, Ron McLean, Alan
Mason and Col Cliffe
Saturday 31st. First round of the Club
Championship Triples had only one game
between Max Greedy, Col Cliffe and Geoff
Hewitt against Denis Hayes, John Watson
and Peter Bailey. Max’s team won 26/13. All
other teams had a bye. Round two will be
this weekend. (RJ) John Watson was the
Umpire.

Friday 30th, there were only10 players in the
morning and 24 played in the afternoon. The
rain waited until we finished and were all
inside on our second drink before making a
splash on the green. Like clockwork Bruce
had the snacks ready for the players after
each of the games. Welcome to our visitors
on the day, and a welcome back to Eric
Rouse who has rejoined the 300 Club.
The Sussex Inlet Rural Fire Brigade gave us
a nice thank you in last weeks Inletter and
the Cudmirrah Berrara Rural Fire Brigade
sent us a letter of thanks for the donations

nice gesture from both the Brigades.

a game. If you’re a visitor, we have bowls

Tuesday 20 January was a pleasant day for
bowls, being a pleasant temperature. There
was a good roll up for social bowls, with
everyone enjoying their games and a chance
to hone skills before the Fours championship
beginning Thursday. The Spider was won by
Denise Powell who also shared the winning
rink with her team – Roma Codey, Heather
Holloway and Fay Rhodin. The runner-up
rink was Coral King, Carol Morris and
Robyn Mackay. The Lucky Door went to
Maureen Smith.
On Thursday, forty members played in ten
teams of four in the first round of the Club
Championship. The winners were as follows:
1. Eileen Brooker, Lyn Handel, Beryl Carter
and Carol Morris
2. Bev Rouse, Denise
Powell, Carol Williams and Carol Carroll 3.
Beth Hatcher, Pat Petersen, Marina Harris,

Maureen Smith, Maureen Desmond and
Heather Holloway, the runners-up were June
Bailey, Margaret Tattler, June O’Keefe and
Jan Moore, and Jean Codey won the Lucky
Door.
Tuesday 27 January was washed out, so the
second round of the Fours Championship had
to be delayed until Thursday. The winners
were as follows:
Bev Rouse with Denise Powell, Carol Carroll
and Carol Williams; Jean Carroll with Coral
King, Val O’Rourke and Anne Green; Val
Hadson with Maureen Smith, Maureen
Desmond and Heather Holloway; Jill
Webber with Fay Rhodin, Barbara Webster
and Bev Garrick. Weather permitting, the
semi-finals will be played on Tuesday 3
February. Bev Rouse plays Jean Carroll, and
Val Hadson plays Jill Webber. These
matches should be keenly contested.
We welcomed Lesley Thoms who was
visiting from Goulburn Railway Club, and
honoured Joan Mercer, Pat Rowland and
Olwyn Carter, all of whom celebrated
birthdays during the week. It was good to
see Olwyn and Carolyn Fenton back
enjoying bowls again.
The Spider went to Jean Codey and the two
Lucky Door prizes went to Roma Codey and
Lyn Handel. Denise Powell, Carol Carroll
and Carol Williams made up the winning
rink, while Margaret Tattler and Carolyn
Fenton were the runners-up.
