We classify people as male or female, northsider or southsider, young or old, Hope or Calvin fan appears as if it will “tell us something” about the person. To a certain degree it does. However, one should hold that bias with a grain of salt until one gets to know the person. For the most part we all desire to be known on an individual basis rather than a “category” we might be in. (Unless of course if our “category” is thought to be favorable.) Ageism is more than just putting one in a particular category, like 60 years old and above. From the definition in Wikipedia: “Ageism is stereotyping and negative discriminating against individuals or groups on the basis of their age. This may be casual or systematic.” The term was coined in 1971 by Robert Neil Butler to describe discrimination against seniors, and is patterned on sexism and racism. Butler defined “ageism” as a combination of three connected elements. These elements are prejudicial attitudes towards older people, old age, and the aging process.” Ageism has been described as prejudice against one’s future self. I never thought of it this way. If our age is our primary defining characteristic, then when the clock strikes a milestone birthday we could become nothing else but old. This state of mind isn’t helpful to ourselves or how we engage with others. How do we free ourselves from such negative discrimination and prejudice of aging? How does becoming older turn into something to be celebrated? Anne Karpf points out in her book, How to Age, that we should “greet our ageing self with both pleasure and realism, and without the need to either idealize or deride its younger incarnation.” Join the “Age Acceptance” movement that neither disparages nor denies the aging process and treats each other as individuals and not categories. Let’s lean into each day that we are given and live life as fully as we are able, in all of its dimensions. Elsa has lived for the past 60 years dreaming of a moment that Fellini had already envisioned: the scene in ‘La Dolce Vita’ at the Fontana di Trevi. The same scene without Anita Ekberg in it, but with Elsa instead. Without Marcello Mastroiani but with that love that took so long to arrive. Fred is a bit younger than Elsa and has always been a good man who did everything he was supposed to do. After losing his wife, he feels disturbed and confused and his daughter decides that it would be best if he moves into a smaller apartment where he ends up meeting Elsa. PG-13. 104 min. His apartment is a viager - an ancient French real estate system with complex rules pertaining to its resale - and the feisty Englishwoman Mathilde Girard (Maggie Smith), who has lived in the apartment with her daughter Chloé (Kristin Scott Thomas) for many years, can by contract collect monthly payments from Mathias until her death. Use it or lose it. If you want to have the ability to do something as you get older, you must do it now. Challenge yourself physically, mentally and socially to always be at your best. 2. Keep moving. Physical activity is the closest thing to a fountain of youth. Staying active can help prevent or lessen heart disease, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, dementia and more. The latest good news is that short amounts of activity can add up throughout your day. Aim for at least 30 minutes a day. Be sure to visit with your doctor before starting an exercise program. 3. Challenge your mind. A lot of mental ability may be lost with age because of a lack of use, but by continuing to learn throughout life, we can grow new connections in our brains. To stay mentally alert, do things such as take courses, converse with friends, play word games, sing or play music, and read. 4. Stay connected. Having a network of friends and being part of a community is the thing most associated with happiness. People who are socially connected have much lower risks for all diseases. People living in retirement communities have ample opportunities for interaction, lifelong learning, exercise and activity, and healthy dining. 5. Never act your age. Age is an attitude – not a number. Following your heart and acting how you feel will keep you dynamic, creative and living life to the fullest. Go ahead, dance in the kitchen. 6. Lower your risks. By identifying health risks and working with your doctor to eliminate threats, you can likely function at very high levels for a longer time. Don’t skip on regular physicals, and be proactive about your health through the years. 7. Eat for the long haul. Avoid skipping meals. Research shows lack of nutrition may result in dementia later in life. Mom was right – eat your fruits and vegetables! Adjust what you eat as your metabolism slows. 10 The Commons | 480 State St. | Holland, MI 49423 | 616-396-7100 8. Enjoy the children in your life. Children bring wonder, renewal and a sense of optimism to our lives, just as we bring wisdom, order and stability to theirs. Make the most of your encounters with children because they enliven you as much as you empower them. 9. Be needed. There are many opportunities to work for the betterment of the community or of those less fortunate. We took care of others when we were younger. Now, more than ever, there is a need for us to reach out. Any activity that gives us a sense of nurturing the world around us will help us, as we help others. Even plants and pets can offer us the kinds of relationships that help us stay engaged in life. 10. Laugh. In studies on people who have lived to be 100, the most commonly displayed traits are humor and optimism. Laughter stimulates the immune system, protects us from disease and is a good work-out. -Dr. Roger Landry Workout To Win Do you need help keeping your New Year’s Resolution? Increasing evidence shows that people who are socially active live longer and remain more independent than those who are isolated. The results of a study on socialization conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health showed that individuals with the highest social integration had the slowest rate of memory decline. The researchers concluded that: Social participation and integration have profound effects on health and well-being of people during their lifetimes. We know from previous studies that people with many social ties have lower mortality rates. We now have mounting evidence that strong social networks can help to prevent declines in memory. Another 5 year study funded by the National Institute on Aging, found that a strong social network of family and friends is associated with a lower risk of dementia. Dr. Richard Della Penna, medical director of the Kaiser Permanente Aging Network, summarized the findings as follows: This well-done study significantly adds to the growing body of information that lifestyle cognitive activity, and social connectivity appear to reduce the risk of dementia and help maintain a healthy brain, and my advice to older adults is to maintain and even increase their social ties. Socializing is indeed good for brain health. The opposite is also true – isolation and loneliness are bad for the brain and can take years off of someone’s life. Strong social contacts have the power to protect a person against the mental decline that often goes along with aging. We need to find ways to foster friendships, to maintain family ties, to make new friends, to try new things, to volunteer and to be passionate about life. 12 The Commons | 480 State St. | Holland, MI 49423 | 616-396-7100 Care Services Expand your social horizon by participating in the following: book clubs, card clubs, travel groups, theater and drama groups, art classes, health and fitness groups, computer classes, and music groups. This brief prayer was spoken by President Abraham Lincoln as our nation began its tragic four-year Civil War. Across five Aprils from 1861 to 1865, armies of the North and South were engaged in an intense military struggle designed to solve the national issues that our Congress could not. As our nation today honors and recognizes the 150th Anniversary of the most intense fighting of that war, you can see the artifacts and hear the stories of this conflict that have survived to this day. This 4-part series will be presented as follows: Week 1-Class introduction along with the causes and events that led to the Civil War Week 2-Holland, Michigan’s role in the war Week 3- Historic artifacts tell the story Week 4- “Meet Mr. Lincoln”: a one-man show on DVD Our presenter Al McGeehan, former Mayor of the City of Holland, teacher, long-time Civil War collector, writer and speaker, will be our guest. He will share his vast collection of war-time stories and artifacts as he takes us back to the time of Lincoln, Grant, Sherman, Lee, Longstreet and the Boys in Blue from Holland, Michigan. You surely do NOT want to miss this program filled with stories of American patriotism, pride, sacrifice and honor.
