This portion deals with two enemies of Israel, Egypt and Amalek. During our bondage and eventual freedom it is Hashem alone who is doing battle for us. We witness the people in terror prior to the crossing of the Sea. Moshe prays to Hashem and God answers, "why do you cry out to me, speak to the children of Israel and move." Rashi, comments here that Hashem is telling Moshe that when the Jewish people are in a time of crisis it is no time for lengthy prayers, action is the right course of the moment. We learn here that when the Jewish people are in peril it's not the time to panic but rather to partner with God in a course of survival and for self-defense. Pharaoh and Amalek represent different threats to our people, and Moshes' tactics symbolize the defense against these enemies. Egypt and Pharaoh are the slave-masters where the Jew can work for his sustenance and survive even through cruel and harsh conditions, as Pharaoh would literally kill the infant boys. The Amalakites on the other hand are the perpetual anti-Semites the spiritual foes, standing between the Jews and Mt. Sinai, blocking the path toward the Torah. Amalek denies the essence of the one true God and wants to show the world that the God of the Jews is not omnipotent. It's like a man who comes to a large vat of boiling hot water and jumps in killing himself, only to see the next crazy also jump into the same vat of boiling water scarring himself for life. By the time the third crazy jumps into the vat it's no longer that hot and he isn't hurt at all. The mission of the anti-Semite, the Amalakites are to show the world that the God of the Jews doesn't always protect Israel and that the Jewish people are thereby vulnerable to attack and defeat. This is true today as we witness the suicide bombers killing themselves and others in a sick cycle of death. But, our faith in Hashem's power protects the Jew, and the Jew's heroic devotion protects the Torah. It is thus that we have survived the haters and the anti-Semite of yesteryear and will continue to devote ourselves to our Torah and mitzvot. To do the right thing and show the world that we are truly the people of the book and Gods chosen people. Shabbat Shalom Rabbi Gabe Elias
