WEEKLY CALENDAR OF
ACTIVITIES IN THE PARISH
THURSDAY: NO BINGO.
NEXT SUNDAY: FEAST OF ST. BLAISE IS FEBRUARY
3rd. This day is marked each year by a simple and
popular sacramental—the blessing of throats. St. Blaise
was a bishop in what we call modern day Turkey in the
300’s. He was sentenced to death for being a Christian
and a bishop. When he was in prison awaiting execution, it is said that a woman brought her son to him because the boy has a fish bone lodged in his throat. St.
Blaise blessed the boy and his throat was cleared.
When we have the blessing of throats on this day, the
priest makes a cross with two candles and asks for the
intercession of St. Blaise for protection from all ailments
of the throat. This is the Feast Day (Name Day) of our
new Archbishop Blaise Cupich. There is a long tradition
among the Catholics to celebrate that day. Remember
him in your prayers.
The Feast of Bl. Alojzije Stepinac is February 10th.
We will celebrate the Feast of Bl. Alojzije on Sunday,
February 15th at the 11:00am Mass.

Christmas and the Feast of the Epiphany are
traditionally a time when we have our homes blessed
for the New Year. If you would like to have your home
blessed, please contact the parish office for the time
and date available or you can sign your name on the
sheet at the entrance of the church.
PLEASE REMEMBER to notify the rectory office
when you or a family member is admitted to the
hospital. Due to the new federal law the hospital
cannot notify the church without your permission.
Any homebound or elderly parishioners who would
like to receive communion or Anointing of the Sick,
please call the rectory.
Masses in memory of your loved ones: If you like
to offer a Mass in memory of your loved ones for an
anniversary or any specific date, please contact the
parish office at least two months before the
desired date. The usual donation is $10.00. The
Mass book for 2015 is getting filled up quickly,
Sunday 9:30am and 11:00 Masses are multiintention Masses where we can have more than one
intention; all others are only one intention.

2015 ARCHDIOCESAN ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL
BEGINS: Many of our parishioners, either have or
soon will receive a mailing from Archbishop Blasé
Cupich. He will ask you to make a pledge to the 2015
Annual Catholic Appeal. The Appeal funds the
operations of the Archdiocese, funds many social
services and services that are of need to ministries to
parishes.
Our parish goal for the appeal is
$10,561.00. When our parish reaches its goal, 100%
of the additional funds received will be returned to us
for use in our parish. Please prayerfully consider a
pledge to the 2015 Annual Catholic Appeal. If you
received your pledge form in the mail, please complete
it and mail it back or bring it to Mass any time. For
those who did not receive a mailing, we will conduct
our in-pew pledge process at all the Masses on Feb.
8th and Feb. 15th and the following weeks as well.
The Archdiocese has asked us to introduce a new
way of giving to our parish. We have in the Christmas
mailings, sent information about the electronic giving
(GIVE CENTRAL) where you can set up automatic
withdrawals and make your contribution to our parish
on a regular basis. You have full control on how much
and how often you would like to make the donation. It
will make it easier for you, you do not have to worry
about writing checks or having cash available and you
can save on postage. If you need help signing up,
please contact us. We will also have weekends where
you can sign up in the lobby of the church. Please
respond as soon as you can. We also hope to set up
this ear, on our web-site for you to make a donation to
the church. This would be of great help to the church
of assuring us of a regular flow of income.
East Side Little Registration for 2015 Season at
Rowan Park on the following dates Feb. 7, 8, 14, 15,
21, 22, 28 and March 1 from 10:00am to 2:00pm. The
registration fee is $200 for the first child, $100 for the
second, and $80 for each additional child. T-Ball is
$75.00 per child. New and returning players must
bring original birth certificate and 3 proofs of address.

Dragi Župljani, Svjesni smo činjenice da su s
vremenom doprinosi u župnu blagajnu opali.
Nadbiskupija nas je zamolila da vas upoznamo s
novim načinom dostavljanja vaše pomoći župi. Primili
ste sve potrebne informacija o tzv. elektroničnom
dostavljanju milostinje (GIVE CENTRAL). Vi ćete sa
svojom bankom moći urediti da ona s vašeg
bankovnog računa redovno dostavlja vaš nedjeljni
dar župi. Nad tim ćete imati potpunu kontrolu koliko
i kako često ćete dati milodar. Time ćemo vam
olakšati, nećete se morati brinuti oko pisanja čekova,
niti se brinuti o novcu u gotovini, imate li ga dovoljno
uza se ili nemate. A oni koji inače šalju svoj dar
poštom, uštedjet će na poštarini. Ako imate problema
upisati se nazovite župni ured. Imat ćemo osobe na
ulazu crkve koje vam mogu pomoć. Nadamo se da
ćemo u idućoj godini i preko župne ‘’web stranice’’
omogućiti vam dostavljanje milostinje župi. Ovo će i
za župu biti velika olakšica, jer će nova stizati
redovno u njenu riznicu.
SV. BLAŽ
3. veljače
Sv. Blaž, po dubrovačkome
Vlaho—živio je u 3. st. u gradu
Sebasti u Armeniji. Predaja kaže da
je bio ponajprije uspješan liječnik,
a potom biskup. Povlači se u
samoću te živi u nekoj pećini.
Njegova je pobožnost sve više privlačila ljude
te su k njemu dolazili tražeći duhovne savjete.
Vijest o njemu se pročula nadaleko, pa i do
rimskoga upravitelja. Ovaj ga uhiti, te ga je
mučio na koncu pogubio. Predaja govori o
brojnim čudesima, a najpoznatije je da je
izliječio dječaka kojemu je riblja kost zapela u
grlu. Svečevo se štovanje proširilo po cijelome
Sredozemlju.
Posebno
ga
časti
drevna
Dubrovačka republika te je i danas zaštitnik
grada Dubrovnika. Božji ga narod moli za
zdravlje po drevnome obredu ‘’grličanja’’ na
njegov blagdan.

Po zagovoru sv. Blaža, biskupa i mučenika,
oslobodio te Gospodin od bolesti grla i svakog
drugog zla. U ime Oca i Sina i Duha Svetoga.

Božić
Radost susreta s Bogom
Božićna slama
Život se vraćao u kolotečinu, dani
su polako postajali duži. No, odmah
poslije Tri kralja moglo se početi s
pripremama za maškare, a to je
značilo novo druženje i novo veselje.
Na
blagdan Sveta tri kralja ljudi su
ŽUPNIKOVA
odlazili
blagosloviti svoja polja i
PORUKA
vinograde. Ponijeli bi malo svete vode,
došli u polje ili vinograd, zajedno se pomolili i poškropili
blagoslovljenom vodom. Tom prigodom su od kuće ponijeli
kuhana vina, pa bi se po hladnoći i okrijepili. Općenito su svi
božićni običaji imali isti cilj—blagoslov, zdravlje ukućana i blaga
te bolji urod ljetine.
Tri božićne svijeće
Nema prave proslave Božića bez svijeća. Poznati su nam
stari božićni običaji s tri svijeće stavljene u čašu punu
pšenice ili u posebni božićni kruh zvan ‘’badnjakuša’’ ili
‘’badnjača’’. Trii svijeće simbolizirale su Presveto Trojstvo:
Oca, Sina i Duha Svetoga. U Bosni i u nekim drugim
hrvatskim krajevima običaj je bio da je svijeće u kuću unosio
najmlañi član obitelji.
Božić i božićni stol
Poslije Ponoćke započelo je slavlje Božića. Sada bi se tek
načela pečenica. Blagovanje uz pjesmu i čestitanje nastavljalo se
do ranih jutarnjih sati. Prvi dan Božića je protjecao u obiteljskome
ugoñaju u miru i odmoru i taj dan se nije išlo u čestitanje, svatko
je trebao biti kod svoje kuće. Dok je na Badnjak bio post i nemrs,
na Božić se jelo obilato i raskošno. Blagoslovljeno se jelo na
Božić odnosilo živadi i blagu. Drugoga dana Božića, na sv.
Stjepana ili Stipandan, Štefanje, Stipanje kako se već naziva u
raznim krajevima, posebno se svetkovalo u kućama u kojima je
netko slavio imendan. Taj dan su dolazili gosti u čestitanje. Na
svetoga Ivana apostola blagoslivljalo se vino, a slama se iznosila
iz doma i postavljala na voćke da bi bolje rodile sljedeće godine.
Na dan Nevine Dječice, zvan i Mladenci, čest je bio običaj tzv.
šibanja, kada bi se ljudi lagano udarali vrhovima šiba,
obilježavajući bol ubijene dječice. Djeca su se blagoslivljala na
misama. Na Novu godinu meñusobno bi se čestitalo, ali bi
ugoñaj bio manje intiman za razliku od božićnoga.
Svršetak dvanaestodnevnice, dvanaest božićnih dana,
blagdan je Sveta tri kralja ili Bogojavljenja. Na taj se dan
spominjemo triju mudraca koji su darivali Isusa, odlazi se na
misu, skidaju se ukrasi te svršava blagdansko razdoblje.
Blagoslivljaju se kuće za sljedeću godinu, a blagoslovljenom
su se vodom nekada blagoslivljali i vrtovi te buduće ljetine.
Često su božićne pjesme pjevali tzv. zvjezdari odjeveni u tri
kralja, noseći zvijezdu. Za očuvanje hrvatskih božićnih
običaja od zaborava najviše se zalagao Antun Radić,
utemeljitelj hrvatske etnografije. /////

Theologians at Vatican Move
Archbishop Sheen’s Cause Closer
To Beatification
The possible miracle needed for the
beatification of Archbishop Fulton J.
Sheen took another step toward papal
recognition June 17 when a panel of
theologians met at the Vatican, the
Archbishop Fulton Sheen Foundation
announced. As a normal part of the sainthood process,
the theologians met to consider whether or not the
promoters of Archbishop Sheen’s cause demonstrated that
the proposed miracle—the survival of a child delivered still
born—occurred after prayers for the intercession only of
Archbishop Sheen.
In March, a seven-member board of physicians
convoked by the Congregation for Saints’ Causes agreed
there was no natural explanation for why the boy’s heart
started beating 61 minutes after his birth.
The child, James Fulton Engstrom, is now 3 years old
and developing normally. His mother, Bonnie Engstrom,
has said she had no pre-composed prayer asking for help
from Archbishop Sheen. “I just kept repeating his name
over and over in my head: Fulton Sheen, Fulton Sheen,
Fulton Sheen.”
Archbishop Sheen was a Peoria diocesan priest who
gained fame for his 1950s television show “Life is Worth
Living” and for his 16 years at the helm of the Society for
the Propagation of the Faith. The archbishop died
December 9, 1979, in New York.
In a statement June 17 from the Archbishop Fulton
Sheen Foundation, Bishop Daniel Jenky of Peoria said,
“With the recommendations of the medical experts and
now the theologians, the case will next be reviewed by the
cardinal and bishops” who are members of the
Congregation for Saints’ Causes.
“Finally, the miracle would be presented to Pope
Francis, who would then officially affirm that God
performed a miracle through the intercession of Fulton
Sheen. There is no timeline as to when these next steps
might move forward,” Bishop Jenky said.
If Pope Francis formally issues the decree recognizing
the miracle, the bishop said, “Sheen could then be
declared ‘Blessed’ in a ceremony that could be celebrated
in Peoria, Sheen’s hometown.”
Another miracle would be needed for Archbishop
Sheen’s canonization.
