meatballs, lefse, carrots, boiled
potatoes, coleslaw, ice cream,
krumkake and beverages. Public
welcome. Adults $23, children 10

2015 Officers
Congratulations to our new Lodge
Officers for 2015. Thank you to
Zone Director Jerry Erickson for
presiding over the installation. The
list of new lodge officers was
published in the December maaken.
Thank You from Sharenet
Mark Ince, Executive director for
Sharenet food bank in Kingston,
thanks the lodge and all its members
for their generous support through
the sharenet auction. $7,100 was
donated from this event.
Ladies Club News
Once again a big thank you to all
who helped with the preparations for
the Lutefisk dinner. A special thanks
to Myrt Jodry for organizing the
krumkake work party and to Sue
Dabinett for putting together the two
day lefse work party. The dinner
couldn't have happened without
these important Norwegian staples.
Our February 5th luncheon will be a
Valentine themed potluck. Be sure to
bring your favorite dish to share.
Kitchen and Food Use
As you all are finding in your
every day grocery shopping, prices
continue to rise. It would be
appreciated if everyone preparing
meals-be it dinners, Rotary
breakfast, Kaffe Stua and other
meals-be especially mindful of
waste and be frugal in their purchase
of needed items. It is up to everyone
to help out your Lodge, so please be
cautious in your spending and use of
all food items.
Centennial Update
Our Lodge will be celebrating its
100th birthday on June 15, 2016.
Leading up to this important event,
there will be monthly celebrations of
our centennial beginning in June
2015. We will be kicking off our
celebration on June 20th with a
presentation of our lodge's history
following
our
Midsommer
festivities.
Lutefisk Dinner
The Maaken will be going to press
before the Lutefisk dinner occurs. A
big thank you to the 70+ volunteers
that will have helped with Lutefisk
dinner. Know that we could not have
done the dinner without you! Tussen
Takk! - Rob Kodalen

Sami People's Day in Norway
February 6th is celebrated as the indigenous Sami People’s Day in Norway
and other Scandinavian countries. The day is official flag day in Norway,
and the Sami flag is flown on all official buildings.
The Nordic Sami Council decided in 1992 to celebrate a joint Sami National
Day, and the day was first celebrated on February 6th 1993.
It marks the date of the first Sami National Convention in Trondheim in
1917. This was the first time the Sami gathered around common interests,
across national Nordic boundaries.
The Sami National Day on February 6th has been made
official flag day in Norway, alone or alongside the
Norwegian flag.
Around 40,000 Sami live in Norway, 20,000 in Sweden
and 7,000 in Finland. In addition, an estimated 2,000 live
in Russia.

RMD & LTCI
I hope all had a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Now that we are into the New Year it is time to look
ahead. For those of you that are over 70 ½ and have an IRA or IRAs it is that time of year when the IRS is wanting you
to make a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). Now, for those of you that do not want to do this because you don’t
need the added income or the increase in tax payment; the IRS will levy a 50% penalty plus tax on the amount of RMD
that was required. Please check with your tax professional on how you need to withdraw from your IRA.
For those of you that don’t need the RMD to live on and will just stick it in the bank to draw zero or next to zero
interest; here is an idea that can greatly enhance your retirement years. In last month’s Maken we talked about the Fear
of Aging. Two of the biggest concerns were running out of money and requiring some form of Long Term Care (LTC).
Instead of taking your RMD and sticking it into a bank why not open a non-qualified annuity with the Sons of Norway
and have your RMD go directly into your annuity. This way the growth in the annuity is tax deferred and down the road
when funds get tight you have another source of funds to draw on.
Getting old is not for wimps! I have a very good friend whose wife has been in a Nursing Home for over two years. The
cost for those two years is a little over $250,000 dollars. The BIG IF is how much longer will this go on? In another
two years it will be over a Half Million Dollars. Long Term Care Insurance (LTCI) is costly, but not having it can be
disastrous!
