(319)795-3100 The Bonny Buyer North, January 28, 2015 5 6 The Bonny Buyer North, January 28, 2015 World travelers make Keokuk their home port MEGAN MCNEILL [email protected] F ord Motor Company founder Henry Ford once said, “Anyone who keeps learning stays young.” Take Charles Hunter as an example of this philosophy. Having spent many years studying and teaching in schools near and far, he’s made the pursuit of knowledge his lifelong goal. His career in education took him and his wife Cheryl from the U.S. to Italy, Japan, Qatar, South Korea and many points in between. RETIREMENT In 2005, with retirement approaching, Cheryl turned to the Internet to find homes for sale in Iowa. “We flew back and looked at six or seven houses,” Charles said. Cheryl fell in love with a two-story brick home in Keokuk. Charles noticed the house had about five additions – including a solarium that was built to house President Theodore Roosevelt during his second visit to Keokuk – that had compromised its Italianate style. He was more attracted to the listing across the street, a “true Italianate” that’s back on the real estate market today. Cheryl’s preference won out, and she and Charles moved to Keokuk in June 2005. Nearly 10 years later, they enjoy the company of friends and the comforts of home that they’ve found in Keokuk. Charles lends his credentials as an arborist (tree expert) and plant biologist to the Keokuk Garden Club and the Keokuk chapter of Trees Forever. He served as the garden club president for two years and continues to be an active member of the group. He also donates trees to a number of community organizations. Many of the trees are grafts he’s created, using tree genetics to develop new and unusual varieties. Charles Hunter lends his credentials as an arborist (tree expert) and plant biologist to the Keokuk Garden Club and the Keokuk chapter of Trees Forever. He served as the garden club president for two years and continues to be an active member of the group. He and Cheryl are members of Evangelical Free Church of Keokuk. They are often visited by their children and eight grandchildren, as well as Charles’ students from East Asia. Charles advises fellow and prospective retirees to “build on the experiences of the past, but look at ways to launch interests into your future.” Share what you’ve learned with other people,” he said. He also believes it’s important to invest in younger generations. FOUNDATIONS Born in Waterloo, Charles grew up on a farm in Jesup – north of Cedar Falls – on the Wapsipinicon River. Charles, who recently turned 70, came along a decade after the Great Depression and near the end of World War II. Those events had shaped his parents’ worldviews, which they instilled in him. “I remember my mother saying, ‘A good education is the one thing that can’t be taken away from you,’” Charles said. After graduating from Jesup High School, he earned his bachelor of arts degree in biological science and psychology from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, and his master of arts degree in education from Drake University in Des Moines. He attended 17 schools in the U.S. – including Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. – and abroad for his post-graduate studies in subjects such as plant genetics. Another field of study, metacognition, helped Charles get a better grasp on how the brain functions and learning occurs, and that knowledge proved invaluable in the classroom. “It seems like most students are never taught how to think,” he said. “The subject matter is laid before them, and they’re expected to make sense of it. Understanding how the brain works helps them learn better.” He recalled one student in East Asia who had severe “test anxiety.” “She knew the information, but she got mental blocks,” Charles said. “I coached her on how to overcome that.” In that student’s part of the world, test performance can literally make or break a scholar. Doing well on an examination brings honor to a student’s family, while those who do poorly on a test bring dishonor to their families. WORLD TRAVELERS Several factors came into play when Charles and Cheryl left behind the familiar landscape of Iowa to spend the next 13 years teaching at international schools in several countries. As a boy, Charles met many missionaries, back in the U.S. on furlough from foreign lands, who stayed in the large tenant house on his family’s farm. “The idea of going to far-off places wasn’t such an unusual concept,” Charles said. By 1993, Charles had been teaching for 25 years at Clinton High School and Eastern Iowa Community College, both in Clinton. Cheryl had visited Europe, New Zealand FM PRISONS Legislators, media tour new and old prisons If you’re NOT SUBSCRIBING to the Daily Democrat... Around that same time, their children Tim and Trisha were setting out on their own paths to adulthood, and Charles and Cheryl were ready for a change of scenery. “When it came time for empty nest syndrome, the kids stayed in the nest and Cheryl and I went to Italy,” Charles said, adding that college freshman Trisha as well as Tim and his new bride held down the fort in Clinton. He was assigned to teach a college-level biology course for advanced placement high school students, filling in during the regular instructor’s year-long sabbatical, at the American School of Milan. After the year was up, Charles and Cheryl came back to Iowa and found that their community had changed a great deal in the time they’d been gone. “By October (1994), we knew we’d be going again,” Charles said. Soon, they were headed for Japan, where Charles spent the next five years teaching college-level courses in the international baccalaureate and advanced placement program biology and other sciences at the Yokohama International School. Several students were under his instruction the whole time, from eighth grade through graduation. “I had always viewed Asians as automatons,” Charles said. “I found they’re very loving, kind and generous people with a passion for learning.” Disciplinary issues were virtually non-existent in his classroom at Yokohama. “They have earned the trust of adults, and they are self-policing,” Charles said about young people in that culture. “Teachers have something the kids want: Knowledge.” His next job was at the American School of Doha in Doha, Qatar, where he taught biology and general sciences SEE HUNTERS, PAGE 2 RECENT OBITUARIES Evelyn Zumdome, 88, Fort Madison Alma D. Pleasant. He is replacing a cooling line. What you wouldn’t know by observing is that Tanner, age 52, is blind. He does everything by feel. Also, in lesser degrees, he utilizes all senses, like smell, taste, and hearing to do any kind of work that a mechanic with sight could do. And, according to Vegas Whaley, owner of the auto repair business, he does an excellent job, as good or better than a certified mechanic. Tanner was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa at the age of ten. His sight continued to deteriorate over the years until he became completely blind in 2006. He can see some light, if looking directly at a light source, but that’s about it. He doesn’t let it slow him down, though, and he likes to stay busy. In fact, that’s why he checks in daily at Whaley Auto Works. It’s better than sitting at home. Tanner doesn’t get paid for his work. Vegas Whaley, is his former stepfather-inlaw. Tanner likes to help him out, and Whaley appreciates it. On the office wall of the shop is a sign that says it all, “Attitude is Everything.” Tanner doesn’t feel gifted, he’s just honored to be able to do what he does, and thankful that he can help out. He’s married to a wonderful woman named San Juana (Juanita), and has two adult step children, and four grandchildren. Tanner became interested in small engines as a child, then graduated to cars and trucks. When his parents were killed in 1969, he moved in with his grandparents in Cedar Bluff. In 1981 he went to Kirkwood Junior College in Cedar Rapids for auto mechan- ics. He met his wife to be in 1985, and was married in 1990. They were living in a trailer in Cedar Bluff, when the EMPTY NEST flood of 2008 rolled through the Cedar Valley, destroying their home. Vegas Whaley lived in Mt. Pleasant, so they moved in with him. They now have their own home. This winter, at Christmas, more misfortune struck. Curt Swarm Tanner and his wife had gone to Texas for two months to visit his wife’s brothers. The trailer they were towing, with most of their possessions, was stolen. But once again, Tanner doesn’t let it slow him down. He still has his wife, and his abilities. He can do any kind of mechanical work, from brakes, to rear ends, to motors and transmissions. He can unbolt and pull an engine by feel. Electrical plug-ins, because of their small, hidden buttons, give him the most problem. Whaley is full of praise when it comes to Tanner. “It’s amazing what he can do. He’s very determined and will figure any problem out, one way or another. He’ll spend whatever time it takes to get something working. He also knows where every tool in this shop is, better than we do. He’s got the shop memorized.” Tanner is also very polite. No matter who he’s talking to, he calls everyone either “sir” or “mam.” It’s attitude. It’s all about attitude. HAVE A good story? Call or text Curt Swarm in Mt. The culture in Qatar bore many similarities to that of Japan, according to Charles. “It’s very safe (in Qatar), unless jihadists are after you,” he said. Charles had just started his second year of teaching in Qatar when the 9/11 terrorist attacks occurred stateside. The headmaster at ASD told American teachers they could break their contracts if they wanted to go home. “I felt compelled to stay and help hold the school together,” Charles said. He returned to the U.S. in the spring of 2002, and that fall he went to Taejeon Christian School in Daejeon, South Korea, to teach college-level biology and psychology. Charles described Daejeon as “the premier science town in Korea.” “About two-thirds of the students have a parent who has a doctorate degree, and about half have a parent who’s a scientist – so I knew I had support,” Charles said. After three years in South Korea, Charles was ready for semi-retirement. “I left the door open for short-term teaching jobs,” he said. Such positions are usually in good supply at international schools, with teachers going on leave or deciding that their jobs aren’t a good fit for them. From October 2006 until the spring of 2007, Charles entered into a contract with the Supreme Educational Council in Qatar. The council was a coalition of American, British and Australian firms tasked with organizing high-quality schools in Qatar. Charles was brought in to help educators better understand learning, specifically in scientific subjects. Aside from a trip to Scotland and Ireland and a few weeks in Europe, Charles and Cheryl have stayed relatively close to home since their last stay in Qatar. “Cheryl has been to 54 countries, and I’m close behind her,” Charles said. “It gives you a different perspective.” Activate your free online access now with your paid Fort Madison Daily Democrat subscription OR sign up for the E-Edition - available 24/7 at dailydem.com Call for assistance or to subscribe. 319-372-6421 Circulation 319-372-1212 www.dailydem.com Your local news is available across all platforms. 8 The Bonny Buyer North, January 28, 2015 2015 Annual Howlers Bawl Coyote Contest February 6-7, 2015 GET FAST, Private STD TESTING. A Harvest of Data that Shows Agriculture’s Value Get the facts about Iowa agriculture. Iowa ranks first in the nation in corn and soybean production. Iowa pork producers raise 28% of all U.S. pork. Hamburger from a single steer will make about 720 quarter-pound hamburgers. The average size of an Iowa farm is around 333 acres (as of 2008). One acre is about the size of a football field without its end zones. A bushel of corn can sweeten 400 cans of soda, make 38 boxes of corn flakes or produce more than 2.5 gallons of ethanol. Your body cannot tell the difference between sugar and high fructose corn syrup made from corn, nor is one “healthier” for you than the other. Iowa has at least 11,000 different soils that make up some of the richest, most productive land in the world. Iowa produces 25% of the country’s supply of ethanol, twice as much as any other state. Studies show without ethanol, Americans would pay 20 to 40 cents more per gallon of gasoline. Iowa produces the second most wind energy in the nation, helping generate enough electricity to power several hundred thousand homes each year. Iowa’s agricultural products from all sources were worth $20.5 billion in 2007. Livestock consume 400 million bushels of Iowa-grown corn annually. Conservation methods have reduced wind and water erosion on American crop land by more than a third even in the last 20 years even as yields have more than quadrupled. (USDA & National Corn Growers Association). Iowa’s climate is ideal for growing crops. Hot summers help plants grow and cold winters help the soil replenish itself. The average American farmer feeds about 155 people worldwide. In 1960 that number was 25.6. 98% of all U.S. farms are family owned. All U.S. eggs are antibiotic-free. Milk is routinely tested to make sure antibiotics stay out of the milk supply. All milk contains naturally occurring hormones, even organic. Your body needs protein for nearly everything it does. Protein is needed to build and repair our muscles, to make our hair and skin, to fight against infections and to carry oxygen in our blood. Proteins are made up of building blocks called amino acids. There are about twenty different amino acids, and your body can actually make some of them. There are nine amino acids, however, that your body can’t make. These are called essential amino acids and the only way to get them is through the food you eat. Some forms of protein grown and raised in Iowa include meat, eggs and milk. This is an award bestowed annually on a volunteer who has contributed outstanding efforts to improve the equestrian facilities at Shimek and to protect the natural resources of the forest. Hunter constructed and donated 16 “You are Here” sign holders, with posts for installation on the 25 miles of equestrian trails at Shimek. There should be no more riders lost for hours. He also made and donated two iron campfire sets as raffle prizes to help raise funds for building new horse shelters at the campgrounds and volunteered time to help construct stalls in the most recently completed horse shelter. Hunter was presented the award — a hand turned bowl of spalted elm, made and donated by Bob Achenbach, and a framed certificate from the Board of Directors — at the annual Friends of Shimek Dinner on Jan. 10. The Award is made possible by a donation from John and Ann Bennett. Schieffer nominated for service award Denise Schieffer of Columbus Junction was nominated for the Iowa Horse Council Meritorious Service Award by Friends of Shimek. Her accomplishments were recognized and she was presented a framed collage at the recent Friends of Shimek Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner. Denise has since been notified by the Iowa Horse Council that she has been awarded their Meritorious Service Award for 2014 and received that honor at their January 24th meeting in Ames. Denise is the President of the Iowa Trail Riders Association. She has been a contributor to the equine community for over 25 years, and has helped get out the word about FOS since their inception. She publishes all news releases about FOS and the annual FOS calendar in the ITRA newsletter and on Facebook. In addition, FOR SALE: Whirlpool washer & dryer. Both working. Good shape, must go.
