The Gregorian “He taught as one having authority.” February 1, 2015 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 February 1, 2015 St. Gregory the Great Mission Statement St. Gregory the Great is a Catholic Church made up of people of many different ages, talents, and cultural backgrounds. We are an urban faith community with a small town feel of welcome and hospitality. Motivated by our baptismal calling, we accept our duty to embody the presence of Jesus Christ in the world and to take up the mission he entrusted to us by our word and example. We glorify God through support and service of our time, talent, and treasure to our church and to the larger community in which we live. ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL – 2015 This week, you are asked to review the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you will receive with your bulletin today. This year the theme of the Appeal is: “Entrusted With Responsibility.” It is God’s love for us that is responsible for all that we are and all that we have. As our response, we each have a responsibility to recognize God’s gifts to us, to develop them and to find ways to share them with others. Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal. While funding a number of Archdiocesan ministries, the Appeal also supports parish ministries that provide religious education to children, youth and adults. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal campaign is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. Sometimes it is difficult to envision how one pledge can help an organization the size of our Archdiocese, how it can make a real difference. But each pledge does make a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver much needed ministries and services. After our parish goal of $21,116 is reached in cash, 100% of the additional funds come back to our parish to help to fund our needs. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you that did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond to it, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend. Thank you in advance for your support of the Annual Catholic Appeal. – Fr. RELIGIOUS BOOKS FOR CHILDREN IN CHURCH Near the baptismal font in the Southwest corner of Church, you can now find a bookcase that contains children’s books that have a spiritual, biblical or religious focus. Those of you who are parents who have small children are invited to take one of these books home with you and share it with your child or children. We ask that you return the book to the bookcase when you have finished reading it. Then feel free to take another book. If you have any religiously themed books for children in your home that you no longer need or use, please add it to the collection in Church so that other parents can have some resources to share our faith and belief with their children. My thanks to Mary Ann Harrington who donated not only these books but also the bookcase. – Fr. YEAR OF SACRAMENTS—ONE WORD AT A TIME Wake Up At a certain low point in the story of the now-destitute prodigal son, he wakes up to his situation. The text reads: “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired hands have bread enough and to spare, but here I am dying of hunger! I will get up and go to my father” (Luke 15:17–18) In the Sacrament of Penance, we ask God for forgiveness that he gladly and generously gives to us. A very first step, however, is waking up to our situation and realizing how much we need God’s mercy. The habits of sin may dull our minds and hearts. We may be sluggish in reflecting on our lives. Whatever numbs us must dissipate. We do need to wake up, and then with the prodigal son we can get up and go to our father. Page 4 February 1, 2015 ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT Perpetual Adoration with exposition needs a great push. People ask me “What will convert America and save the world?” My answer is prayer. What we need is every parish to come before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament in holy hours of prayer. I pray that the Community Missionaries of the Blessed Sacrament dedicated this purpose of spreading perpetual adoration will flourish!—Mother Teresa, CM Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is Friday, February 6, 2015. Please enter the Church through the side door near the ramp in the courtyard parking lot. WOMEN’S CENTER—BABY BOTTLE PROJECT Thank you to St. Gregory the Great Parish from the Women’s Centers .
