Instructor &
Lifeguard Positions
Swimming Instructors are vital in developing
the important life skills of swimming. They create an enjoyable environment for people of all
ages and abilities while focusing on safety.
Lifeguards are more than good swimmers.
They are water rescue professionals trained in
emergency care. They prevent accidents, identify hazards and determine safe practices.
Lifeguarding is a fun, exciting and rewarding
job. It carries an enormous responsibility,
which is why lifeguards take continuous
training to ensure their skills, knowledge and
fitness remain sharp.
To be hired as a lifeguard, candidates must be
16 years of age or older; must have current
National Lifeguard certificate; Standard First
Aid with CPR-C. Volunteer experience with
Vaughan’s Learn to Swim program will enhance your eligibility for employment.
Considerations for either of these positions
consists of a 'wet' and 'dry' interview.
How it works:
To be eligible to attend a wet screening, candidates do not have to be
certified in both instructor and lifeguard awards but must be certified in
either Lifesaving Instructor and Swim Instructor awards; LSS Standard First
Aid/CPR-C or in NL and LSS Standard First Aid. If a candidate has not
successfully completed NL they must have a current Bronze Cross (within
2 years of certification date). Candidates wishing to be employed by the
City of Vaughan must have a Police Vulnerable Sector check. For residents
of York Region, the police vulnerable sector check application can be obtained via the York Regional Police web site: www.yrp.ca/pvsc.aspx
Aquatic Staff Screening:
Wet Interview
Aquatic staff hiring consists of a wet and dry
interview. During the wet interview applicants
may be asked to perform NL skills and teach a
short instructional lesson. Applicants are required to bring the following: Copy of current
qualifications, vulnerable sector screening (if
available), bathing suit, resume, application
form (available at the local community centre)
and whistle. A dry interview will be arranged
upon successful completion of the wet interview. Note: Successful completion of National Lifeguard fitness standard required.
