“ He approached, grasped
her hand and helped her up.
Then the fever left her and
she waited on them.”
Saturday, February 7

How washed out we feel when
we are sick. We can hardly move, we are so weak.
How grateful we are when our strength is restored and
we can get back to living again.
It is with gratitude that Peter’s mother-in-law responds
when Jesus heals her. His hand strengthens her and his
touch lets health-giving grace flow back into her frame.
While the story speaks of physical healing, the Scriptures are multi-layered and the reader is expected to
perceive the deeper meaning of the healing. It is obviously the healing of her spirit that is of concern. We
know from experience that the kindness and ministering of friends to us in our illnesses is as important as
the medicines or ministrations we receive. Sometimes
it is enough to have someone to talk to or share our
concerns. Feeling that we are not alone is a great boost
to our strength.
The response to those who help us is to help them in
return. Peter’s mother-in-law does just that. She waits
on them.
We too are called to serve God who has helped us in
life. We are called to serve those who have blessed us
with their care. When we do, we show that we understand that God works through people who are his
agents of love.
Let our service to the church show God’s living presence in our world.

SOCIAL JUSTICE CORNER
Animal Fair in the Library
St. Josephine Bakhita
Students in grades 2, 3 and 5 recently presented their
biome research projects. The library was transformed
into 11 different stations, each representing a particular biome. The
children were assigned a biome and
worked together to share their research results with teachers, parents
and other students. The 5th graders
presented facts specific to their assigned biomes; the 3rd graders presented facts about
animals that live in the biome
and the 2nd graders presented facts about the habitats
found in the biome. Congratulations to all!
St. Josephine is the patron saint of Victims and Survivors of
Human Trafficking, having been kidnapped by slavetraffickers in Sudan when she was nine years old. She was
later brought to freedom through the help of the Canossian
Daughters of Charity. She lived in religious consecration
and in service to others, especially the most lowly and helpless. This saint, who lived at the turn of the 20th century, is
even today an exemplary witness of hope for the many victims of slavery. The Vatican announced that the Pontifical
Council for Migrants has designated St. Josephine’s Feast
Day of February 8, as the International Day of Prayer and
Awareness Against Human Trafficking. Advocate for policies that address the causes of modern day slavery, protect
survivors of human trafficking and seek justice for the victims. For current action alerts visit.
