Francis Mastrovito, T.O.R., being pastor at the time. She has now decided that it is time for her to retire. Her last day of work will be Friday, February 27, 2015. Judy has been a most gentle and generous, as well as superbly capable and efficient, servant of the Lord and of the Church for more than a generation. All of this parish has benefitted immensely from her service. Thanks, Judy, for saying yes and for serving well all this time. Through the years, the Lord provides for the work of the Church to continue, generation after generation. Consider the array of the Faithful and even Saints who mark these many generations. By far, most of them are known only to their families and church communities in which they have lived and served. It is the same way here. The Faithful do not replace other Faithful, they follow them in a communion of life and in a tradition of service. Even so, the work of a parish continues by the generous of heart and needed skills who come forward generation after generation. It is not a matter of finding a replacement or of shoes being filled, but of God’s people stepping forward to continue the service of the Lord. Fr. Richard Did you remember to bring your “Can of Soup” to participate in the National “Souper Bowl” Challenge to help fight hunger in our community? Baskets are available at the doors of the Church. Year End Tax Statements: Year-end tax statements are available THIS weekend to be picked up after all Masses. Please stop and get yours and help us save money for postage. Prayer Service for Life: Last Thursday, January 22nd we hosted an Ecumenical “Prayer Service for Life”. We are thankful for the many of you who attended. Our featured speaker was Mrs. Kaye Munday who was the Executive Director of Alpha Alternative for many years. Kaye gave us a history of the landmark case Roe v. Wade (January of 1973) and the companion case from Georgia of Doe v. Bolton (decided the same day). Did you know that Norma McCorvey is “Jane Roe” and Sandra Cano is the “Doe” of Doe v. Bolton. Norma McCorvey claimed then that her pregnancy was the result of a rape, although for over a decade now she has been outspokenly pro-life and publicly admitted that this, and virtually every fact on which her case was built was a lie, as does Sandra Cano. Did you know that both McCorvey and Cano are both outspoken pro-life advocates. 3 PARISH NEWS CONT. Have you ever read their story? It would be an interesting read. Did you know that more than 55 million lives (babies) have been ended by abortion. To put this in perspective, it would mean the population of the 18 states in the area from Arkansas and Wisconsin in the East to Idaho and Nevada in the west would be gone. This would also mean that more than either the Hispanic or the African American population of the U.S. would be gone. Congratulations College Students: What follows is what we know. If your son or daughter falls in this great achievement, please let us know so that we can congratulate them as well for their hard work. We congratulate the following college students from Saints Peter and Paul who are attending the University of Kentucky and are on the Dean’s list for the Fall 2014 Semester: Sarah Covington, (daughter of Lisa and Pat Covington), Sierra Hall, (daughter of Art and Karen Hall), Amy Shelton, (daughter of Doyle and Kelly Shelton) and Gant Unfried (son of Jeff and Beth Unfried). At Murray State University we congratulate Emily Pape (daughter of Michael and Shannon Pape) who achieved a 4.0 for the Fall Semester – her first semester in college. At Austin Peay State University we congratulate Mallory Burman (daughter of Michael and Lisa Burman) who is also on the Dean’s list for the Fall 2014 Semester. At Western Kentucky University we congratulate Abby Pace (daughter of Jon and Angie Pace), Lydia Buzzard (daughter of Thieu Buzzard), Rebecca Schroeder (daughter of Anita and Marty Schroeder) and Jose Rodriguez (son of Jose and Diana Rodriguez). At Brescia University we congratulate Dakota Barron (son of Rebecca Barron). Nicolas Montejos Studying Abroad: Nicolas Montejos will be a part of a group of students from Centre College who will be studying in London, England during the Spring 2015 Semester. Nicolas says, “I will begin my semester studying abroad on February 11th. I decided to study abroad in London because it has been one of my life long dreams to go travel around Europe and I saw this as my first opportunity. I also wanted to go somewhere where culture and history were constantly around oneself.“ While in London, students live and study in the Clerkenwell district, a 20-minute walk down Theobalds Road to the Centre classroom near the British Museum. The housing is an easy walk to the Chancery Lane tube station (Central line) as well as to the Farrington tube station (Circle, Metropolitan, and Hammersmith & City lines). Students can also easily walk to the West End theatre district, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Saint Bartholomew the Great 1123 priory church, the Museum of London, Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery, and other famous London sites. So students will fly out on Tuesday, February 10 th and return in April. One course that Nicolas will (Continued on page 4) 4 SS PETER & PAUL CATHOLIC CHURCH, HOPKINSVILLE, KY PARISH NEWS PARISH NEWS be taking will involve a major “lab” element, the lab being the city of London. Each student selects a specific London site relevant to her or his academic/professional interests; students research the site through personal interviews with Londoners and research available at the British Library and other London institutions; students then give oral presentations of their written projects to the class. Let us keep Nicolas and his family (Ivan and Juanita) in our prayers while he is away studying. The picture is of Ivan and Juanita, Kendra and Nicolas on the day of Kendra’s graduation from Centre College, May of 2014. World Day for Consecrated Life – February 2, 2015: In 1997, John Paul II called for consecrated life to be promoted throughout the universal Church. He declared February 2, the feast of the Presentation of the Lord, to be observed as World Day for Consecrated Life (WDCL). In the United States, when February 2 is not on a Sunday, we celebrate on the Sunday after the Presentation. Therefore, World Day for Consecrated Life will be celebrated in the Church on Monday, February 2, 2015 and in parishes on the weekend of February 7-8, 2015. Please pray for all those who have made commitments in the consecrated life, and be sure to thank them on their special day. May they continue to be inspired by Jesus Christ and respond generously to God's gift of their vocation (Continued from page 3) Did you know? The first Saturday of each month we conclude the 8:00 a.m. Mass with Benediction. After Mass is complete, we stay and offer a Rosary for the unborn. All are welcome to come and join us as we put into practice our call to support life. Upcoming Liturgies The Feast of the Presentation – February 2nd, often called Candlemas, commemorates the purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the presentation of Christ in the temple, which occurred 40 days after his birth as prescribed by Jewish law. According to Mosaic law, a mother who had given birth to a boy was considered unclean for seven days. Also, she was to remain 33 days "in the blood of her purification." Luke tells us, quoting Exodus 13:2,12, that Mary and Joseph took Jesus to Jerusalem because every firstborn child was to be dedicated to the Lord. They also went to sacrifice a pair of doves or two young pigeons, showing that Mary and Joseph were poor. Once in the temple, Jesus was purified by the prayer of Simeon, in the presence of Anna the prophetess. Simeon, upon seeing the Messiah, gave thanks to the Lord, singing a hymn now called the Nunc Dimittis: Lord, now you let your servant go in peace, your word has been fulfilled: My own eyes have seen the salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of every people: a light to reveal you to the nations and the glory of your people Israel. Simeon told Mary, "Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is spoken against, (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed." Simeon thus foreshadowed the crucifixion and the sorrows of Mary at seeing the death of her Son. So come join us on Monday, February 2nd at the 8:00 a.m. Mass as we will gather with all the school children and celebrate this great feast. There will be a lit candle procession so bring yours from home or come to the sacristy and get one. Blessing of Throats – Memorial of St. Blaise, Tuesday, February 3rd. We will be offering Blessing of the Throat to our school children on Monday, February 2nd at the end of the 8:00 a.m. We will also be offering this blessing at the conclusion of all weekend Masses (January 31st and February 1st). World Marriage Day – February 8th: World Marriage Day honors husband and wife as head of the family; the basic unit of society. It salutes the beauty of their faithfulness, sacrifice and joy in daily married life. The idea of celebrating marriage began in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 1981 when a group of couples decided to encourage their mayor, bishop and governor to proclaim St. Valentine's Day as "We Believe in Marriage Day". The event was so successful, the idea spread to other communities. By 1982, 43 governors officially proclaimed the day and celebrations spread to U. S. Military bases in several foreign countries. In 1983, the name was changed to "World Marriage Day", designated to be each year on the second Sunday in February, and emphasis was placed on interfaith participation. World Marriage Day celebrations continue to grow and spread to more countries and faith expressions every year. As a church, we at Saints Peter and Paul will be offering a special Mass on Sunday, February 8th at 5:00 p.m. to recognize World Marriage Day. At this Mass there will be an opportunity to renew your Wedding Vows. This is a wonderful time to invite the whole family, to rejoice in the tremendous gift of the Sacrament of Marriage. A reception will follow in the narthex. Our planning committee has met and is asking for your help. Could you bring a picture of your wedding day? If you would, please place your name and wedding date on the back of the picture and bring it to the parish office this week. The picture will be returned to you at the celebration. We would like to use these pictures as we decorate and celebrate the gift of Marriage. • FEBRUARY 1, 2015 • 5 THIS WEEK IN OUR PARISH FEBRUARY 2-8 Tues: Sts. FEBRUARY 1, 2015 • FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME WORSHIP IN THE DOMESTIC CHURCH, II The excerpts from Lumen Gentium and Familiaris Consortio offered in the last two bulletins speak of the witness and service in the Christian home led by the parents with their children. Jesus Christ through the gifts of the Holy Spirit empowers and inspires them as a domestic church to participate in his own mission. Rightly, the Church associates this witness and service with Christ’s prophetic and kingly offices covenanted through Baptism and Confirmation, shared in the Christian household through the Sacrament of Matrimony. But there is also the priestly office through which the family offers spiritual worship to the glory of God and for human salvation. In fact, all that is included in witness and service, “all their works, if done in the Spirit, become spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ: their prayers and apostolic works, their married and family life, their daily work, their mental and physical recreation, and even life’s troubles if they are patiently borne (see 1 Peter 2.5).” The worship of the domestic church so considered is brought to the Eucharistic celebration to be integrated with Christ’s own sacrifice to the Father. As Lumen Gentium puts it: “In this way the laity too, as worshipers carrying out their holy activity everywhere, consecrate the world itself to God [LG, 34].” These insights should be recognized as typically Catholic by most of us and I, for one, deeply believe them to be true. Still, I am certain that there is more to be said and deeper insights to be gained. Familiaris Consortio does take these insights further. Pope John Paul II, following the 1980 Synod on the Family, explores the intimate connection among the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Marriage. The wedding liturgy gives rise to a life of spiritual worship in conjugal communion and in family life. It lives out the love of God in Jesus Christ by the gift of the Holy Spirit under the concrete conditions of this earth. Christian marriage, like the other sacraments, "whose purpose is to sanctify people, to build up the body of Christ, and finally, to give worship to God," is in itself a liturgical action glorifying God in Jesus Christ and in the Church. By celebrating it, Christian spouses profess their gratitude to God for the sublime gift bestowed on them of being able to live in their married and family lives the very love of God for people and that of the Lord Jesus for the Church, His bride. Just as husbands and wives receive from the sacrament the gift and responsibility of translating into daily living the sanctification bestowed on them, so the same sacrament confers on them the grace and moral obligation of transforming their whole lives into a "spiritual sacrifice." What the Council says of the laity applies also to Christian spouses and parents, especially with regard to the earthly and temporal realities that characterize their lives: "As worshipers leading holy lives in every place, the laity consecrate the world itself to God [FC, 56]." 7 Of course, this is what grace and Christian faith envision, what we are called to strive for in Jesus Christ. Saint Pope John Paul II believed that marital sexual union, if the couple dedicate their union to a mutual and as complete-aspossible self-donation, honoring each other for Christ’s sake and for the glory of God, is both virtuous and holy. He saw it as having the inner grace to be self-sacrifice in Christ and at the heart of the spiritual worship in the domestic church. It is a goal to strive for by the grace of God. Not only is the couple’s sexual union the place in which new life is conceived, it is the continually renewable encounter, loving by the measure and example of Christ crucified, in which parental love is continually re-sourced. Every child hopes most deeply that its parents love each other with an unshakable, faithful love. When that relationship is rooted in a selfsacrificial love which honors Jesus Christ, then the home is secure. From this love springs what is meant most deeply by home. It is the home in which the family is sheltered, nurtured, and protected. Our hope to achieve this home, this domestic church, is based not in us but in our Lord Jesus Christ. That is why through the Sacraments of Penance and Eucharist, we dare to seek it even after having failed it or missed the mark. That we should seek it is encoded in our very design by God. That we may seek it with hope of experiencing it is the gift of the Sacrament of Marriage. That we must seek it is the commission of the Gospel, Christ’s sovereign mandate to the Church from which we may not be excused. Fr. Richard PARISH NEWS, CONT. Anointing of the Sick: Pope John Paul II designed February 11th as World Day of the Sick, “a special time of prayers and sharing, of offering one’s suffering for the good of the Church and of reminding us to see in our sick brothers and sisters the face of Christ who, by suffering, dying, and rising, achieve the salvation of humankind. Because of this, we will celebrate the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick at all Masses the weekend of February 7th and 8th. The prayers, antiphons, and texts focus on the mercy and forgiveness of God. So, pray with these prayers and scripture readings and ask God to bring you healing – both, mind and spirit. Consider inviting an elderly person to Mass with you on this weekend so they can receive this Sacrament of healing as well!
