Fifth Sunday In Ordinary Time
February 8, 2015
Healing and Calling
In today’s Gospel Jesus heals Simon Peter’s mother-in-law.
Jesus came and grasped her hand and helped her up. Her
response to the touch of the Lord was to serve Him and His
disciples. This meant far more than simply performing
household chores. In this story of hurt and healing, Saint
Mark is saying something that all Christians recognize: when
Jesus Christ touches us, when He heals us, we have no
choice but to immediately enter into His service. That is the
nature and power of His love. His love transforms us into a
people of loving service and calls us forth to serve others in
like fashion. As good stewards, how do we use our time and
talent to serve our community? This weekend you will hear
of one ministry needing help. Please listen carefully. Fr. Tom

This weekend we are highlighting the ministry of
Art and Environment. The importance of the liturgical environment is vital to bring us closer to
Christ. The visual presentations portray a tangible
form of the teachings of the Church.
This team plans and prepares the sacred space
for the different liturgical seasons. The ministry
has many gifted and talented people. To be a part
of this group, you don’t need to have artistic gifts,
just a desire to help them enhance the worship
space and who are willing to understand the importance of environment and how it calls us to
prayer.

Habitat/ReHabitat:
There is a new program for the
Faith Community in the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate.
“Rehabbing” homes. Due to families moving up or moving
out, Habitat homes become available for new partners.
When a family moves or is able to buy another home, Habitat is first in line to purchase the home. Depending on the
condition of the home, the cost to rehab lies between
$15,000 and $30,000. Working together the churches in
Anchorage would raise the money and do the rehab work.
Certainly there will be opportunities to work on the larger
Oklahoma project, but the focus of volunteers from the Faith
Community would be the rehabs. These would be shorter
term projects with the added blessing of working with the
partner families preparing to live in their new home. The
first rehab is currently expected to begin sometime in April
and would be in the Peterkin and Bragraw area, one of the
homes many of our St. Elizabeth’s volunteers helped build.
Are you or is someone you know living in substandard
housing and wondering if Habitat for Humanity is for you?
There will be several opportunities in February (from the 13th
to the 21st) to learn more. Stop at the Peace and Justice
bulletin board for further information. Or call 272-0800.
Many thanks
to the women who attended the recent
Women’ Spirituality Conference. They collected $937
to be donated to St. Francis House food pantry. When the
money was delivered, the director indicated the funds would
be used to provide 400 families with fruit and vegetables
through an agreement with a local provider of produce. This
is a strong commitment for healthy options for these families, for their children.
As we celebrate this donation, we note that Lent will soon be
here and once again we will have a Lenten Project, once
again St. Francis House. Details in new week’s bulletin.
St. Francis House continues to need of volunteers to help
stock shelves or assist with shopping. Contact Kara Casanova, Community Engagement Manager, at [email protected] or 907-222-2320.
A Path Appears:
There is still one more in this series,
Monday’s program focused on poverty in the U.S., Columbia
and Haiti. It is still available online if you missed it: http://
www.pbs.org/independentlens/path-appears/. Once again
individuals, seeing a need, made an effort to make a difference. On Saturday morning, February 14th, there will be a
webinar interview with Nick Kristof, with an opportunity for
questions. If you have an interest in participating, contact

Alaska Permit #1631
Recent and harmful criticism of legislation that is unable to protect ALL vulnerable unborn children
prompted this statement—January 29, 2015:
Priests for Life is proud to support the next major
step to restoring protection to children in the womb:
the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. In the
House, this bill is H.R. 36, and we urge all to contact
their Representative to urge him or her to support this
bill.
Every baby in the womb without exception is a person, with the full human rights that personhood entails. Their personhood demands that we save them as
soon as we have the opportunity to do so. This bill is
our legislative opportunity to do so. It does not protect
everyone, but the ones whom it does protect are persons who need to be protected ASAP. The fact that the
bill leaves others unprotected does not take away the
rights of those who are, or the urgency to protect them!
If all the babies in the womb were already protected by law, and a bill were introduced that had exceptions to whom would be protected, that would be
immoral to support, because it would be taking away
protection from those who already have it.
But this bill takes protection away from nobody.
They are all unprotected! This bill begins to restore protection, and is written in a way that gets the maximum
support from the lawmakers who have to vote on it.
This bill is the next logical and effective step towards restoring full protection to all children in the
womb, and we will work with unwavering support to
pass it.

WE’RE UP AGAIN!
February is St. Elizabeth’s month to provide groceries,
personal care items and hot meals to incoming refugees. Our group supplies the items necessary to start
out in their new homes; about two weeks worth of food,
cleaning supplies, toiletries and assorted sundries. Sometimes the need is great, as when a large
family arrives with no friends or relatives here. At other
times the new arrivals move in with families or people
who are already settled here, so the immediate need is
less. But really, it’s not only about the practical issue
of having food and supplies on hand. It’s as much
about the welcome, the knowledge that people in their
new community are embracing their arrival and wanting to make their transition as pleasant and easy as
possible. We are part of their first impression of their
new city/state/country. Please join us in making it a
loving, positive one. Call Karel Henkel at 345-6817 or
[email protected] if you are interested in joining
us. Thanks so much.
Food for Saint Francis House
Food is collected for St. Francis House
in our foyer and delivered after the 2nd
Sunday of the month (Sunday, February
8th, 2015) Please bring your nonperishable items to donate to the foyer.
MILITARY RECOGNITION BOARD
In the foyer there is a display of men &
women in the military from our parish. If you
have a son, daughter, husband, wife, grandchild
or any other family member in the military
please submit their name and, or picture to Debbie at the office. Let us continue to pray for
these dedicated people & their families.
If you bring the precious Body of Christ
to the homebound or to the sick, Thank
You. Please remember to bring the pyx
back to the church so that others might
share his glory.

Hires New Principal
I am happy to announce
that we have hired a new
Principal for our school! Mrs.
Kathleen “Kathy” Gustafson,
is a veteran of the Anchorage School District and will
replace Principal Jim Bailey
after his official retirement,
which will take effect in May
2015 at the end of this
school year.
Originally from Park
Rapids, Minnesota, Kathy
has worked in public education in Alaska for the past
25 years. She has taught in Sand Point, Dillingham,
and several elementary schools within the Anchorage
School District. Currently, she is an A.S.D. elementary
administrator. She has a Master’s of Educational Leadership from the University of Alaska, Anchorage, and a
Masters of Arts in Teaching from Grand Canyon University. She has a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Mathematics and Art.
Kathy and her family have been members of our
parish for the past 16 years. Her husband, Sven, is the
principal of Romig Middle School. They have two children, Steven and Julie.
Much effort has gone into a National search for
our new Principal over the past eight months. Please
join me in thanking our Principal Search Committee
members for their time, dedication, and personal commitment to this critical process: Tom Allen, John Estabrook, Beth Lottridge, Mike Mills, Lisa Orizotti, Eric
Ward, and Glenn Wright. This entire effort has been
led by school parent and Search Chair, Kellie Thomson,
to whom I am most grateful. WELCOME, KATHY!
— Fr. Tom
First graders celebrated the 100th day
of school by dressing up to look 100
years old. They wrote about what they
might be doing at that age. “I will live
with my mom and dad and be retired
when I am 100.” “I will roam the world
in a wheel chair at 100.” “I will have
gray hair and grandchildren.” “I will be bald and will be
happy!” Check out our adorable art projects and photos
about being 100 years young!

Third graders are learning about famous Americans in
preparation for an oral presentation of their chosen American, at the “Feast of the Nation”. The students are also
learning poetry in Language Arts by memorizing a poem by
Robert Frost titled : “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” They continue to practice their multiplication facts
each day. As Valentine’s Day approaches they are busy with
special art projects. Third Graders are immersed into learning!!!
During “Catholic Schools Week” students were asked
to write an essay on what their Faith meant to them. Each
grade had an essay winner who was presented with an St.
Elizabeth Ann Seton medal to wear around their
necks. Over the next few weeks we would like to print some
of these essays.
I think it is important to have faith in God because he
teaches us to love. I love God because he always is with
me. God teaches us to be loving. I love that I believe in God
-Sarn Haughey, First Grade
It means to me that God will always be with me – that
is what my faith means to me. I will always trust in God and
never say I hate you. God will always be my best friend and
that is why I follow him. He is a very good leader to me.
The Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows is a mission
of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton's Church. The Chapel is
set in the small mountain community of Girdwood. The
peaceful surroundings offer beautiful
scenery, and many opportunities for
winter and summer activities.
The Chapel of Our Lady of the
Snows , with adjoining Meadows Community Center, is a perfect setting for
weddings, receptions, rehearsal dinners, retreats, and
non profit events. www.chapelourladyofthesnows.org

Please join us for : Sunday Mass at 6pm
Adoration first Monday 7:30pm to 8:30pm
-Maggie Moriarty, Second Grade
Ever since I came to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School, I
have been so happy. I am always happy because on the
way to school I pray in the car with my dad and my brother
Erik. When I get to school, I pray morning prayers with my
class. At Mass on Wednesday, I am happy to listen to Father Tom and Father Patrick teach us about god. On
Wednesday I go to adoration with my class to end the day.
In my family, and with my class, we love each other and
care for one another. Together we grow in faith and accept
the Sacraments. We believe in the Holy Trinity. This week,
we learned about vocations and the 12 apostles. The 12
apostles followed their vocations because God spoke to
them and they were listening. My vocation is to be a good
student.
I am so excited because three schools will come to our
school for Mass. I hope those children can come to other
events at our school too. My favorite events at our school
are the Jog-A-Thon and the Spelling Bee. Yesterday, we
made sandwiches and trail mix for the shelter. We are part
of our community.
Together, in our families and in our schools and in our
church we are building the Kingdom of God.
