Those numbers include at least three returners in each discipline, male and female, and a high of five returners in the women’s alpine team. The Lobos return 10 of their 11 All-American runs from a year ago as well, including double All-Americans Eva Sever Rus and Sean Horner. The only AllAmerican gone from a year ago is Armin Triendl, who not only was a first team All-American in the giant slalom but a first team Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-American. Joining the 14 returners are redshirt Christian Otto, who lettered for three years in Nordic before an injury sidelined him in 2014, and nine rookies to collegiate racing. Last year the Lobos picked up a team title, its first since 2011, winning the Jade Enterprises/Lobo Invitational. UNM never finished lower than third in any single meet during the season in 2014, and had its best national finish since 2009 with a third place NCAA showing. The Lobos picked up plenty of honors along with way with nine athletes earning 11 All-America honors, nine All-RMISA honors, six RMISA skiers of the Week, the RMISA Men’s Alpine MVP, the RMISA Women’s Nordic Athlete of the Year, and a national champion in women’s Nordic freestyle. Last Meet New Mexico finished fourth at the Spencer James Nelson Memorial University of Colorado Invitational last weekend with the Nordic events at Steamboat Springs and the alpine events at Eldora. The Lobos picked up one podium at the event, and it was turned in by Emilie Cedervärn , who finished third in the 15K classical race. It was UNM’s first podium in a Nordic event this season. Staples and Robnik Earn RMISA Skiers of the Week A great week by both Sydney Staples and 2 Hometown (High School/Last School) Mateja Robnik was capped off on Wednesday when they were both honored by the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association (RMISA). Staples was named the RMISA Skier of the Week for the Spencer James Nelson Memorial University of Colorado Invitational. Robnik was named the same for the giant slalom qualifying events, which were also completed in Colorado. Along with Staples from the CU Invitational, Trevor Philp of Denver earned the men’s alpine award, Mads Stoem of Colorado won the men’s Nordic award, and Veronike Mayerhofer of Utah won the women’s Nordic honor. Colorado’s Roger Carry earned the men’s alpine award for the RMISA giant slalom qualifiers. www.GoLobos.com Staples finished fifth in both the slalom and the giant slalom at Eldora, although for Skier of the Week and RMISA MVP points, she was credited with third place (Westminster’s skiers aren’t eligible for the awards). The two fifth place finishes continued a superb sophomore season for the native of Bountiful, Utah. Staples, who entered the season with just one top-10 finish to her credit, now has five top-10s in six races this season. She currently is sixth in RMISA MVP points with 152, 23 behind the leader. That leader is her teammate Mateja Robnik. Mateja, from Slovenia, finished tied for second and fourth in the two giant slalom qualifiers this season (with the fourth adjusted to third-place points for RMISA scoring purposes). Robnik has not finished lower than fourth in any of the four giant slaloms this season, and she is just three points ahead of Colorado’s Brooke Granstrom Wales and five ahead of Denver’s Monica Hübner. Brachner Done for the Season Patrick Brachner missed the Spencer James Nelson Memorial University of Colorado Invitational with an injury, and head coach Fredrick Landstedt has announced that he will miss the rest of the season. A junior, he will attempt to get the year back. Injury and Illness Have Hit UNM Hard Along with Brachner, the Lobos have been hit hard by the injury bug, and the ol’ illness bug as well. Overall, the following races have been missed in the following disciplines: Women’s Nordic Men’s Alpine: Men’s Nordic: Women’s Alpine: 10 (Cedervärn 2, Gnüchtel 2, Sever Rus 3, Nord 3) 6 (Brachner 3, Öster 3) 4 (Nikander 4) 0 Lobos Add Swedish Pair The Lobos will get a pair of additions for the meet in Colorado with the additions of Emilie Cedervärn (Nordic) and Carl-Johan Öster (Alpine). Both rookies hail from Sweden and arrived on campus at the break, but not in time for the opening meet of the season. Sever Rus Wins National Title All season long race results misspelled the name of Eva Sever Rus (combining her two last names, which belong to her mom and dad, into Severrus), but there was no mistaking her on March 8, 2014 when she won the 27th individual NCAA National Title at UNM. Severrus, who won the title by 1.8 seconds over the 15K course, was New Mexico’s 17th skiing national champion, and the 10th on the women’s side. She was the first freestyle national champion since Ivana Radlova in 1993, and the first Nordic national champion since Kristina Strandberg in 2000, who won in Classical. The win was one of three on the season for Sever Rus, who also picked up wins at the Colorado Invitational (15K FS) and the RMISA/NCAA West Region championships. 11 races, and the one non-third place finish was a fourth place finish on her home track in the 10K FS at the Jade Enterprises/Lobo Invitational. Three Lobos Repeat as All-Americans Getting nine skiers to earn 11 All-America honors is a neat trick, especially when only getting nine All-Conference nods. However, UNM had three skiers repeat All-American performances from 2013. Mats Resaland, who was a Second Team All-American in the 20K FS a year ago, stepped it up in his senior year to earn First Team honors in the same discipline. It was his third All-America honor in his sparkling career at UNM. Mateja Robnik, who earned Second Team All-America in the slalom last year, did so again in 2014. The only non-repeater was Jöonas Rasanen, who won the 2013 Slalom national title, but didn’t make the top 10 this season. UNM had six others earn All-America honors in Eva Sever Rus (5K CL, 15K FS), Armin Triendl (GS), Sean Horner (SL, GS); Aku Nikander (10K CL); Aljaz Praznik (20K FS); Karoline Søvik Myklebust (GS) and Courtney Altringer (GS). Plenty of Individual Titles in 2014 The University of New Mexico saw plenty of podiums and champions in the 2014 season. On the Alpine side, individual champions included Juho-Pekka Penttinen (Jade Enterprises/Lobo Invitational Slalom), Jöonas Rasanen (Jade Enterprises/Lobo Invitational Slalom) and Mateja Robnik (Colorado/ RMISA Qualifier Giant Slalom). Including the three titles, UNM’s Alpine squad picked up 13 podium finishes, seven on the men’s side and six on the women’s side. In Nordic, Eva Sever Rus had three titles, all in the freestyle including the NCAA Regional/RMISA Meet and the NCAAs, and Aku Nikander won the Pat Miller Invitational Freestyle. Overall, the Nordic side picked up 15 podium finishes with the women taking 11 and the men taking four. Combined, UNM had seven individual champions (four men and three women), and 28 podiums (17 women and 11 men). After the Fact, but Nikander is U.S. Open Champion When Aku Nikander opened the season with a win in the 30K FS at the Pat Miller Invitational in Utah, it showed that he was pretty tough in the longer races. He proved that again after the season, when he traveled to Alaska for the U.S. Open championships, winning the 50K Freestyle in just under 2 1/2 hours. While not an official collegiate win for Nikander, it capped off a brilliant first season with the Lobos where he recorded nine top 10 finishes, including five in the freestyle out of six races. For Sever Rus, she ended her season with 10 podium finishes in her final 3 www.facebook.com/UNMSki Two Really Smart Guys Mats Resaland and Armin Triendl was both honored as first team Capital One/CoSIDA Academic AllAmericans, earning their way onto perhaps the toughest team to make, the CoSIDA at large team. That team encompasses the men’s sports of Fencing, Golf, Gymnastics, Ice Hockey, Lacrosse, Rifle, Skiing, Swimming & Diving, Tennis, Volleyball, Water Polo and Wrestling. Triendl and Resaland join Alabama golfers Cory Whitsett and Bobby Wyatt as the only teammates from the same school, let alone the same sport, to make the first team. Overall, there were 15 student-athletes on the first team. Twelve of those student-athletes came from one of the five power conferences or Notre Dame. Only UNM’s tandem and Grand Canyon’s Ivan Nechunaev were not from one of the five power conferences. Armin Triendl, a senior from Oberperfuss, Austria, has a 4.10 GPA and is majoring in finance. He was a 2012 Capital One/CoSIDA Third Team Academic All-America, but he missed the entire 2013 season with a knee injury. He bounced back from that to finish second in the NCAAs in the slalom, earning First Team All-America honors. A native of Kongsberg, Norway, Resaland has a 4.04 G.P.A. and is majoring in business administration. He finished third at the NCAA Championships in the Nordic freestyle, earning the third All-America honor of his career, while helping the Lobos to a third-place team finish this year. Hailing from Oberperfuss, Austria, Triendl is a senior with a 4.10 G.P.A. in finance. He bounced back from a knee injury that forced him to sit out the 2012-13 season to place second at the NCAA Championships in 2014 in the slalom. The second-place finish earned him first team All-America honors. He also helped the Lobos place third in at the nationals competition this season. Head Coach Fredrik Landstedt Head Coach Fredrik Landstedt, himself a former Lobo Nordic skier, is entering his eighth season as the head coach of the Lobo ski team and his 2oth season overall as he served as a student assistant coach and assistant coach before becoming the second head coach in program history the summer of 2007. With Landstedt at the helm of the program, the Lobos have finished fourth, third, third, seventh, eighth, sixth and back to third at NCAA Championships. During his tenure at UNM (assistant coach from 1990-91; 98-2007 and head coach from 2007-present) he has coached 45 Nordic Lobos to 72 All-American awards and four individual event Nordic team national championships, and one individual Nordic national champion. Since taking over as the head coach, Landstedt has fÖster ed 35 Alpine All-America performers and four individual event Alpine team national championships. He has mentored three Nordic individual national champions in Kristina Strandberg (2000), Jimmy Vika (2003) and Eva Sever Rus (2014). He has been a integral part of the coaching staff for six Alpine individual national champions in Marte Dolva (2002), Jennifer Delich (2004), Malin Hemmingsson (2007, ’09, ’10) and Jöonas Rasanen (2013). 4 Preseason (January 2, 2015) 2015 SYNC Coaches Poll Rank Team (First Place Votes) Points 1.
