february is
festival month!
THIS MONTH, BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR CALENDARS AND JOIN IN FOR
SOME FUN CELEBRATIONS OF SPECIAL FESTIVALS ALL MONTH LONG!
February is full of Festivals!
Many special celebrations
this year — from Super Bowl
Sunday to Groundhog Day,
Mardi Gras, Chinese New Year,
Presidents Day, Ash Wednesday,
Friday the 13th, the Academy
Awards, African American
History Month and Valentine’s
Day. What a festive month!
We will be celebrating in many different ways here at The Breakers by some
special themed trips to the Dusable Museum and the Green Mill. We will be
having a Mardi Gras party with a performance by the Dixieland Jazz Cats,
a Super Bowl and Oscar viewing party to watch with your friends, themed
dinners in the Dining Room, themed Brain Health groups, trivia about all of
the festivals, and small celebrations throughout the building! Stay tuned and
participate in what you can!

MONTH FOR

STILL ACTING UP! IS A SKOKIE PARK
DISTRICT-SPONSORED PERFORMANCE
TROUPE OF TALENTED SENIORS OVER
THE AGE OF 55.
Since 1986, the group has performed
original musical productions throughout the
Chicago area and presents a new production
each year. This will be a show you won’t want
to miss! These singing seniors are living
the high-rise life and the condo board had
better watch out! Much like living in a large
community like The Breakers, everyone has a
story, a complaint, a passion and an opinion.
Can they all get along? Make yourself at
home and you’ll see why “It Takes a Village!”
THIS MONTH’S
silver star
JO ANN OYEMADE
Jo Ann has been a resident at
The Breakers for over one year
and has taken advantage of
many great aspects of living in
our community. She has been
involved in a variety of programs
and has made many new friends
in such a short amount of time.

Jo Ann is a Chicago native with three sons (eldest deceased in 2012), five
grandchildren and one great-grandson, and was employed 36 years as an Early
Childhood educator, mentor, ECE staff supervisor as well as city-wide ECE Union
delegate. She loves to cook and try new recipes. Her hobbies include listening to
music, reading, gardening, drawing, painting, travel and fishing.
She planned a wonderful tribute program last month to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
and helps bring residents in our community together in many other ways as well. Jo
Ann always gives great suggestions for new programs and trips into the community
and is always willing to lend a hand and help when needed.

THIS MONTH’S
EVENT RECAP
ringing in 2015!
The Breakers
enjoyed ringing
in 2015 with
a delicious
Surf and Turf
dinner along
with wine, beer,
champagne and
music from the
1920s to today’s
hits played by
DJ Adam Jams!
The dance floor
was packed the
entire night and many residents described it as a “the best party in years!”
IT’S OUR PLEASURE TO SERVE YOU ...
word from your executive director
chart hero
CARING, HONESTY, APPRECIATION,
RESPECT, TEAMWORK
BRITTANY MACKIE, Lead
Concierge, is our next Employee of
the Month. Brittany has worked at
The Breakers for over 10 years! Not
everyone knows this, but Brittany
actually started working here as a
Dining Room server.
She has two children, Blake and
Blair, who she loves spending all
her free time with. She also likes
hanging out with her friends, going
out to eat at new restaurants and
playing music with her kids.
Her favorite thing about her job
is getting to help residents on a
daily basis and working with her
awesome co-workers!
BUILDING FRIENDSHIPS
The Breakers is a lively community where residents live life with the freedom
to discover and enjoy their passions in a relaxed, friendly and diverse family
environment. It is a place where you can make friends. Now some will say
February is the month of love ... well, maybe it is, but friendships equate to
love. Good friendships improve all aspects of your life. True friends will be
there for you to help you relieve stress, provide you with comfort and joy,
and help prevent loneliness and isolation. We live in a beautiful and active
community. There are so many people to make friends with. Let’s make
February a month where you meet even more friends. Get outside that
comfort zone ... reach out to those you see every day but never approach. You
never know ... they could be the best friend ever! Go on, you can do it! Ask
open-ended questions for example: “Who do you know here?” “When did you
move here?” “What keeps you busy?” “Where did you grow up?” Find out if
you have anything in common. Keep the conversation going with small talk
and listen effectively. Don’t worry or take it personally if things don’t work out.
The point is to enrich your life by meeting new people. I am confident you
will find many who appreciate you and you them, who is interested in you and
you them, you will find someone who trusts you and you them, but most of
all you find many to have lots of fun! Go on, meet a new person each day this
month ... you won’t be sorry.
