New Philadelphia News Across the Pastor’s Desk: Excited About Lent Lent is a season of introspection. We search out Jesus Christ before our own hearts and minds, and we search out our own heats and minds---our own lives, before Jesus Christ. Perhaps you have heard the story of a young man at the art museum showing off for his best girl, telling her how little regard he had for a certain painting. Seeing that a guard was listening, the young man said, “Well, what do you think?” The guard responded, “Sir, that painting has been judged by the ages, and called a masterpiece. We do not judge it, as much as it judges us.” Jesus Christ is the Master who judges us, albeit with kindness and grace. We begin preparations for our Lenten Journey on Sunday, February 15th with the distribution a Lenten guide entitled, “Jesus the Good Shepherd.” It features 47 readings, each one written by a member of our congregation. We enter Lent proper on Ash Wednesday, February 18th, with the Holy Communion offered at 6:007:00 a.m. and at 5:00-6:00 p.m. Drop by the church sanctuary. Take time for prayer. Communion will be served every ten minutes. We will also celebrate the Holy Communion on Sunday, February 22nd. Our Lenten Journey continues on four Sundays in March: 1, 8, 15 and 22. We will gather in the Fellowship Hall at 4:30 p.m. for a presentation by three guest speakers, and the pastor. A meal will follow at 5:45 p.m. for those who desire it. On March 1st, Chaplain Rodney Stilwell of the Forsyth Jail and Prison Ministry will speak us about “Transforming the Heart.” Each time Rodney visits a small group, he creates excitement and good will; we thought it was time for the whole church to have an opportunity to meet him. On March 8th, the Rev. Dr. C. Daniel Crews and the Rev. Dr. Nola Knouse will talk about “Transforming our Work and World.” If you have not heard Dan and Nola, come find out why their presentations are always well attended and appreciated. On March 15th, the Rt. Rev. Sam Gray will be present to talk about “Transforming within Christian Community.” As a Bishop of the Unity, and in his work with Moravian Missions, Sam has become our foremost observer of Christian communities around the world, Moravian and non-Moravian. On March 22nd I will be talking about “Transforming the Soul in the Stages of Life.” There will be some points of interest for people in every stage of life, and it will give me a chance to work with tools I have not used before. The Rev. Joel Long has been coaching me in using new technologies, and I think he is reaching me. Palm Sunday is March 29th, Come sing “The Hosanna!” Holy Week Readings are scheduled for Monday, March 30th and Tuesday, March 31st. We will continue Holy Week Readings on Thursday, April 2nd , and also celebrate the Maundy Thursday Communion. Friday April 3rd, we will finish our readings, and share a Lovefeast. Easter Sunday falls on April 4th, and will have one Service, at 11:00 a.m., followed by the Graveyard Service. We tried to reimagine the Graveyard Service in 2014, and it was a great success. Please check the article, “Recapturing the Reverence in the Resurrection Service,” online, or read it herein (page 2). I eagerly await this Lenten Season. I believe that the Master has much to teach us. Blessings! Pastor Green New Philadelphia Moravian Church - February 2015 Recapturing the Reverence in the Resurrection Service Traditionally, the Resurrection Service, which takes place after Easter Worship in the sanctuary, began with the pastor reading the Easter Morning Liturgy from the balcony that overlooks the front entrance to the Church. At the conclusion of that portion of the liturgy, the pastor came down, and followed the band to God’s Acre. All worshipers, including the choir followed the pastor, and all non-essential communication was kept to a minimum. A Silent Procession was the goal. Of course, that was before we built so many buildings, and created so many different ways of leaving the church, and entering the graveyard. Over the years, the movement to the graveyard lost all form. People were understandably eager to take up a position near the graves of their loved ones, and they moved quickly to do so. It was still a great service; but many of us felt it was once even better, more reverent, more moving, a conscious deliberate act of corporate worship. Page 2 if you park in the east lot (on the Preschool/Office Wing side of the church), or off campus, in one of the adjacent office parking lots. Otherwise, you may be asked to sit in your car until the processional passes. We think this return to a more structured and orderly Resurrection Service will add immensely to this wonderful act of corporate worship. We trust it is not an inconvenience to the congregation; but a blessing, and we hope that everyone who reads this will understand and appreciate our effort. Lenten Devotion Guide in Production For the third consecutive year, a Devotion Guide is being produced to accompany our journeys through the Lenten season. Forty-seven authors representing both members and friends of the New Philadelphia congregation have reflected on scripture passages from the Moravian Daily Text, beginning with Ash Wednesday on February 18th and ending on Easter Sunday. This year we would like to recreate the experience of years in the not too distant past. Over 1,000 copies of the Guide are being printed and will be distributed on Sunday, February 15th. Readers will be delighted to find that artwork by NPMC Preschool children is included to enhance the Guide theme of “The Good Shepherd.’ This year our Ushers will try to channel all worshipers into this procession to pass through the main entrance to God’s Acre: Band, Pastor, Choir, and then the Congregation. The Lenten Devotion Guide brings a daily focus to our spiritual lives during this important season and is also a wonderful way to share our faith with others. It remains free of charge. We would like to give the band time to process to the graveyard, and start playing antiphonaly, and we would like to have the pastor who is conducting the service lead everyone except the band through the Main Gate of God’s Acre. People who have special needs, especially those in wheel chairs will be admitted through the other gates, and once the band, pastor, and choir is in place, the other gates will be opened to everyone. We will need extra ushers to accomplish our goal. If you are willing to help, please contact Fred Flynt ([email protected]), or Dick Rodden ([email protected]). So, too, if you attend Easter Worship, and are not staying for the Resurrection Service, it would help New Philadelphia Moravian Church - February 2015 Christy’s PFRRKWJ Corner Page 3 Lenten Program 2015 New Philly Kids! For much of the year we struggled to some extent with lower than expected contributions and a bit of confusion among some people on how our funds are spent. We completed a number of special projects and the usual December bump in giving did not get us back to even but brought us closer than anyone thought could happen. Our year cannot be characterized as a great year, financially speaking, but it was a good year. The trustees have two sources of funds to manage. One source is the permanent or designated funds. These gifts are for specific projects or types of projects. In 2014, we completed the installation of the sign that began in the previous year for a final payment of $13,401. The children’s chapel was completed for a total of $28,970 which gives our young people an excellent place of worship. New tables were purchased for the fellowship hall at a cost of $17,396 replacing 15 year old worn tables. The final item was the landscaping done at a cost of $41,147 which adds an element of safety as well as dressing up our campus. Again, these projects were completed with designated funding, not general fund resources. The other source of funding, the general fund, is the resource the trustees manage for the benefit of operational expenses of the church. During the stewardship season you were provided a pie chart showing how the money is used with the heaviest portion going to salaries, building needs and our provincial obligation. Managing these funds becomes tricky when giving is down. We have been fortunate over the last few years to manage our funds to a surplus, but this year we had to dip into that surplus for $43,419 which was just over 10% of our savings. Thank you everyone for your gifts. May we turn a good year into a great year in 2015. Board of Trustees 1st Thursday of each month There is profound difference between leaders and managers. A good manager does things right. A leader does the right things. Managing is about efficiency. Leading is about effectiveness. Managing is about how. Leading is about what and why. Management is about systems, controls, procedures, policies, and structure. Leadership is about trust — about people. February is heart month! Take some time (this month) to take to heart the beauty and the necessity of having both managers and leaders in the life of a church. We are blessed to have both! We are excited to share with you that in the year 2014, thanks to your faithfulness in prayer and financial contributions, we were able to distribute approximately $52,000.00 to help further God’s kingdom. We so appreciate YOU and ask for your continued support. On February 8 at both first and second services we will have the young girls in our congregation model some of the pillowcase dresses we have made. This is an ongoing project of the Womens Fellowship. In 2014, they made 100 dresses. The dresses were shipped to Sierra Leone to Mohammed and Safie Braima. The Braimas serve the Moravian Church in Sierra Leone through church planting, leadership development, a Junior Secondary School with more than 200 students, a library, community health programs and community outreach. They have been in the US since Sept. due to the ebola outbreak in the country, but hope to return to Sierra Leone in March. On Sunday, March 1 at 5:00p.m.at Fairview Moravian Church there will be a special gathering for this couple before they return to Sierra Leone on March 10. This will be a time of prayer, sharing by the Braimas and worship. We invite you to come and participate in this important event!! Womens Fellowship will start sewing again on Saturday, February 21 at 10AM in the Library. We ask that if you have any cotton material lying around, please consider donating it to be used for dresses. We need pillowcases, notions or monetary donations to buy these items. We invite all women in the congregation to get involved! This is a fun project and a great fellowship time for ladies in the congregation. What a great way to spend the winter - sewing for young girls who might not otherwise have a dress! Our next Missions and Social Concerns meeting will be Sunday, February 8 at 5PM Banquet Room. Everyone is welcome to attend! Page 5 Bells of Joy Bells of Joy continues to play once a month at either first or second service from February to May. We’ll play February 22, March 22, April 5 (Easter), May 26 and for the special RCC music event this spring. (More details later.) Bells of Joy will play ”You Raise Me Up,” on February 22 as part of the 9 a.m. service. Mark Cartner will be the soloist. Five octaves of handbells and handchimes will be played for this in-spiring piece. “You Raise Me Up,” based on a traditional Irish tune, was composed by Brendan Graham and Rolf Lovland, an Irish-Norwegian duo, Secret Garden, and first performed by them as an in-strumental in 2002. Lyrics were added in 2003, and Josh Groban is one of the performers who has made the contemporary hymn memorable. The arrangement by Joel Raney that our handbell choir is playing has a Celtic flavor. Meditate on these words from the song as you hear handbells and chimes play and hear Mark sing. We hope that you are both inspired and comforted by God’s power as we share this piece with you. You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains; You raise me up to walk on stormy seas; I am strong when I am on your shoulders; You raise me up to more than I can be. New Philadelphia Preschool will open registration for the 2015-2016 school year on Tuesday, February 17 for current families and church members. It opens to the community on Monday, February 23.We are also excited to announce the dates of our upcoming Summer Fun for children age 1 – 5. It will be a time of prayer, sharing and fellowship with Mohamed and Safie Braima before they return to Sierra Leone on March 10th. Sierra Leone is a Mission Area of the Southern Province through a covenant partnership with the BWM (Board of World Mission) and the Sierra Leone Mission of Little Church on the Lane. Rev. Mohamed and Safie Braima serve the Moravian Church in the Ngehun region of Sierra Leone, through church planting, leadership development, a Junior Secondary School (with more than 200 students), a library, community health programs and community outreach. Prayers are always needed in support of these ministries, but especially now as they face the difficulties of dealing with Ebola. Please come out and show your support for the Braimas and for the work that God is doing through them (and through us!) in Sierra Leone Music on the Mountain A Moravian Music Weekend with separate tracks for band instrumentalists and singers.
