SAVE THE DATE Vermont Ethics Network presents One Size Does Not Fit All: Treatment Decisions for Advanced Serious Illness Wednesday ~ April 29, 2015 8:30 a.m.—4:30 p.m. ~ Hilton Hotel & Conference Center, Burlington, VT Featuring National Speakers Douglas White, MD, MAS Dr. White directs the University of Pittsburgh Program on Ethics and Decision Making in Critical Illness. His research encompasses both empirical and normative analysis of surrogate decision-making for patients with lifethreatening illness. His empirical research has two central aims: 1) to identify factors that adversely affect surrogate decision-making for critically ill patients; and 2) to develop and test interventions to improve surrogate decisionmaking. His normative work focuses on ethical issues that arise in intensive care units, including the allocation of scarce resources, resolving futility disputes, responding to conscience-based treatment refusals by clinicians, and developing fair processes of decision making for incapacitated patients who lack surrogate decision makers. Muriel Gillick, MD Muriel Gillick is a physician specializing in the care of elderly patients and adults of all ages who are facing serious, lifethreatening illness. She is a staff physician at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates and a Professor of Population Medicine at Harvard Medical School/Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute. She provides consultation to patients at the Brigham and Women Hospital, a major Harvard teaching hospital. The major focus of Dr. Gillick's work is caring for patients near the end of their lives. She is particularly interested in helping patients and their families figure out what approach to medical care makes most sense for them, given their underlying health status, their values, and their goals. She is board-certified in both Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine. Michael Germain, MD Dr. Germain is Professor of Medicine at Tufts University in Boston, an Attending Physician at Baystate Medical Center, a nephrologist with Western New England Renal & Transplant Associates, and a physician affiliated with Holyoke Medical Center.
