Chapter VA-R Newsletter February 2015 Shenandoah Valley Wings Gold Wing Road Riders Association Chapter Director Hello Everyone! S pring is coming soon! We just have to get pass the snow, rain and low temps. We have the fundraiser flyer done and will bring it to the next meeting. At this time we have the North Carolina Drill team coming up to do a show for us at 10:30. As for the dunk tank, Dennis Weston our district director will be there to get wet. Dave, Dianne, Ann and I went to the District Meeting in January in North Garden. Dave filed our tax forms. A tentative schedule was done for all the chapter fundraisers. have that for you soon. Mike Hirsh will be our chapter’s new Membership Enhancement Coordinator (MEC) as of 2-1-15 so lets give Les a big hand for a job well done. Mike will be getting sworn in at our next meeting, so come out and support him in his new job. Thank you Mike. Wow, the new Marble game that we started in January started with a bang!!!! Gary Hoover won the first pot. Rally in the Valley will be at the same location as last year in Roanoke with a tentative date of October 1-3, 2015. District has put together an entrainment program with each chapter doing a skit about states. We pulled a card for the state of Vermont. We will bring this up at coming meetings. The chapter received a $50.00 check back from District for the Basket that was done for last year’s contribution. We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the Golden Corral in Harrisonburg on the 1st at 3:00 PM. Remember that since Easter is the 5th of April our April meeting will be on March 29th. Thank you everyone for your support and participation. Les has put together a list of rides starting with the Highland Maple Festival ride; let’s hope for no snow, rain or low temps. Gary Hoover is working on hotel rooms for us for the Kitty Hawk Ride. We should Tim & Pam Hoysradt Chapter Directors 1 Rider Education The ARCS Approach to Motorcycle Safety W hile browsing the internet for material for my article this month, I found yet another acronym for motorcycle safety… the ARCS approach. Chapter Staff Chapter Director Tim and Pam Hoysradt 540-949-6042 [email protected] Assistant Director open Attitude: To the world. Readiness: Your physical state. Conditions: The environment. Situations: The current scenario. Treasurer Dave Burgess 540-434-6952 [email protected] Accidents are all about probability and the ARCS approach is a way to break down the risk involved. With a good Attitude you are more likely to use a positive approach considering the RCS of the acronym. A positive attitude keeps you Educators rational while analyzing your physical Readiness. Are you in good shape to ride? Ann & Carl Hogshead Is your bike in good condition? If you are and it is, you will need to consider the 540-933-6129 Conditions of the environment before starting out. Is the weather conducive to [email protected] safe riding? It is risky to drive in a blizzard, we know that it probably is, but what Couple of the Year about the rain? What about the condition of your tires compared to the weather Paul and Sandy Plant conditions? And what about the Situation in which you will be riding? Is the [email protected] fic you will be riding in beyond your driving skills? Accidents occur when ARC’s Historian/Scrapbook intersect. We however, are planning our rides for the fresh year, getting our bikes / trikes ready, and are anxious to make use of some good weather. If you look at the schedule, you’ll see that we have a ride soon on March 14th (rain date is the 21st, and look below for dinner ride note) to the “Highland Maple Festival”. This ride is Chapter VA-R’s “Spring Wakeup Ride” so to speak. We didn’t get to do this ride last year due to severe rain and high water in areas, soft ground for parking so this will almost be new .... yes? Ordering the largest chocolate desert on the menu seems to attract a certain cast of participants from the female persuasion who have determined it is their divine right to indulge regardless of propriety concerns. One might even say it can get ‘out of hand’ now and then, and high drama results. But what can one say when the lucky dude is surrounded by hovering biker angels who spar for the sweetness he offers up? Ah, the life of a GWRRA director. How sweet it is! 4 Chapter Celebrations Anniversaries Birthdays February Patrick & Anna Molloy Dwane Maust Ryan Zerkel Lois High Jim Snider Dale Wurzer 02/10 Classifieds For Sale: Chapter “R” antenna flags $14.00 ea.
