Mission The mission of the Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestras (CSYO) program is to provide talented young musicians of central Ohio with challenging rehearsal and performance experiences in professional settings. CSYO emphasizes the performance of traditional orchestral literature under the leadership of professional conductors. Openings for new members depend upon both the number of current members leaving their orchestra and the conductor’s judgment. If you send in an audition application and fee but there is no opening for your instrument, the CSYO will notify you and refund your audition fee. Eligibility and Membership When will I know my audition day and time? Membership in the CSYO is open to talented young musicians in grades 3-12. Over 300 musicians from 10 counties in and around Central Ohio participate in the program. Membership Requirements Members must participate in their school instrumental music programs and take private lessons on the instrument in which they perform in CSYO. The annual tuition fee is $385 plus a $25 registration fee and a retreat fee that varies with each orchestra. A limited amount of need-based financial aid is available. The Orchestras The CSYO program encompasses four different orchestras: Youth Orchestra (Grades 9-12) Peter Stafford Wilson, conductor Cadet Orchestra (Grades 7-10) Mark Sholl, conductor Dr. Jim Bates, assistant conductor Chamber Strings (Grades 6-9) Dr. Robert Gillespie, conductor Junior Strings (Grades 3-6) Sara Given, conductor Each orchestra rehearses weekly and performs during the school year. Youth Orchestra occasionally participates in national and international tours. Cadet Orchestra tours occasionally around Ohio and the surrounding states. Chamber Strings and Junior Strings tour yearly around Central Ohio. All four orchestras have performed at local, regional and national professional music conferences. Sponsorship The Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestras are a program of the Columbus Symphony with additional support provided by AEP and The Ohio State University. Students will receive a letter, audition schedule and map approximately 2-3 weeks prior to their audition. Students auditioning for more than one orchestra will receive multiple letters. If there is a conflict that you cannot avoid, please call 614-221-5650 as soon as possible. When will I know if I have been accepted? Acceptance packets will be mailed in June. If you have auditioned for more than one orchestra, you will receive a packet only for the group to which you were accepted. Students not accepted will also be notified. If you do not receive your audition results by July, please call 614-221-5650. My grade level qualifies me for two or more groups. How do I decide which group to audition for? We suggest string students in sixth grade (or younger) who have not yet played in an organized ensemble audition for Junior Strings, as there are a number of differences between playing solo pieces and playing as part of an ensemble. Similarly, string students in seventh or eighth grade should audition for Chamber Strings. Woodwind, brass and percussion students who have performed in an ensemble fewer than two years should audition for Cadet Orchestra. Students whose grade qualifies them for more than one orchestra are welcome to audition for each eligible orchestra, although you may have to audition more than once and on different days. Note: If you audition for more than one orchestra, you only need to pay one $35 audition fee. What is the cost to participate? Do I pay this now? The annual tuition fee is $385 plus $25 registration and a retreat fee that varies with each orchestra. Do NOT pay tuition now. You will be billed for your tuition upon acceptance to the program. A limited amount of need-based financial aid is available. Why do I also have to play in my school music program? The CSYO is firmly committed to the importance of school music programs and supports and strives to cooperate with the music education community. Members must participate in their school instrumental music programs and take private lessons on the instrument on which they perform in CSYO. We expect our members to be role models and musical emissaries in their school ensembles. Students who are homeschooled or do not have instrumental programs at their school are exempt from this requirement.
