VOLUME FIVE, ISSUE 11 | JAN. 28, 2015 From the Superintendent New leadership, new legislature This year brings some exciting opportunities to work with our state elected officials to make positive change for public education. Joy Hoffmeister, our newly elected state superintendent, hit the ground running when she took office on January 12. She has already started meaningful dialogue with educators across the state to better understand what our students, teachers and schools need to succeed, and what she can do to help. On February 2, our state legislators will enter the conversation as the 2015 legislative session convenes. Several bills have been introduced for this session which address funding for education, teacher retirement, assessment and academic achievement, and legislators seem eager to work with educators on many issues. To stay informed about legislation related to education, I encourage you to visit the Take Action! tab on our website where you will find information about the legislative process. Once the legislative session is underway, you will also find a Legislative Update link which will direct you to the Cooperative Council for Oklahoma School Administration’s weekly legislative updates. These updates will provide you with a briefing on the past week’s legislative activity and how it could affect Oklahoma students and teachers. I certainly look forward to collaborating with state leadership and Oklahoma legislators during this session, and as an educator and a constituent, I hope you will also become engaged in the process.
