With enough intensity and dwell time it can kill airborne microbials. This is usually not practical in a residential or commercial HVAC system as the amount of UV energy needed for a meaningful airborne kill rate would require an increase in cooling to overcome the heat load. They are useful in keeping the coil free of mold for the areas of the coil that are directly exposed to the light. Unlike RGF’s REME® or PHI, this technology does not send friendly oxidizers into the room to aggressively kill germs at the source. COP/PCO – Catalytic or Photo Catalytic Oxidation Process. COP and PCO are used interchangeably. This system uses a matrix of catalysts, usually Titanium Dioxode. The Titanium Dioxode is excited by the UV for PCO and heat for COP and creates a killing field on its matrix surfaces. Note: Only the air that passes through the matrix is treated. This technology differs from HEPA in that it does not create a pressure drop. Unlike RGF’s REME® or PHI, this technology does not send friendly oxidizers into the room to aggressively kill germs at the source. ESP- Electro Static Precipitator or Ionizers. These have been around for over 50 years and are the basis of the now infamous Sharper Image “Mystery” ionizer. These create ozone. If engineered well, the ozone levels will be low and within Federal safety limits. They are not as effective as COP, PCO, HEPA or an AOP device. Unlike RGF’s REME® or PHI, this technology does not send friendly oxidizers into the room to aggressively kill germs at the source. AOP - PHI - Advanced Oxidation Process – Photohydroionization A proprietary RGF technology. This technology is totally unique in that it kills microbials at the source in the room. If you sneeze, 77% is killed before it travels three feet. PHI sends airborne hydro-peroxides throughout the home that kill airborne and surface borne viruses, bacteria, mold, odors and VOCs. However, it has little effect on particulates (dust). ® REME – Reflective Electro Magnetic Energy. A proprietary RGF Advanced Oxidation technology. This process also creates hydro-peroxides. However, it does it faster than PHI, plus it ionizes them, giving it the ability to do everything that PHI can ® do, plus particulates such as dander, dust, pollen and smoke. REME can kill 99% of microbes in a sneeze at three feet. Provides hydro-peroxides throughout the room making the entire area a kill zone. REME HALO2 2 REME HALO is the next generation of RGF Advanced Oxidation Technology. It has been in development for over two years, and now has a total of six (6) patents pending on the unique technology and process. The design focus from inception was to increase our hydro-peroxide production to as high a level as currently possible within our existing product line. It also has a pest deterrent system designed to keep pests out of the HVAC ducts. 5 30th Anniversary Issue Patented Technologies RGF continues to be the innovation leader in environmental technologies with the recent awarding of four more US patents. Two of the patents relate to their Fin Saver units, which reduce corrosion of the copper evaporation lines and coils of HVAC systems, which is an important issue especially in coastal areas. Another is for the Pan Saver, a non-chemical, self-powered unit designed to combat slime growth in the condensate pans of HVAC systems, and the fourth is for the Universal Bio-Reactor, which was designed specifically for the turf / golf industry and their unique requirements of herbicide and pesticide removal and heavy biological loads of washwater. In 2014, RGF Food Safety Technologies were successfully applied in meat, dairy Food And Drug Administration and other food plants to control foodborne pathogens, including Listeria monocytogenes, E. coli 157:H7 and Salmonella. PHI systems were installed in two Wisconsin dairy plants that were shut down due to contaminaon with Listeria. In both cases, the PHI technology was an integral component of a correcve acon plan to fully address the contaminaon problems. Both plants reopened and have since operated with no environmental or product posives for Listeria. A large food processing plant that was shut down aer two Listeria recalls also benefi ed from RGF food safety technologies. In this case, state-of-the-art remediaon soluons were combined with PHI and RGF's Turbo Ozone Generators to eliminate sources of Listeria contaminaon on processing equipment and for the overall plant environment. All UV lights, including our UV line, give off some ozone; usually in the .003 -.08 ppm range (this can vary due to test point and methods). This is not a problem as many electrical products give off ozone! The California “no ozone” initiative is ill founded. We agree with the California position on ozone air purifiers as high levels of ozone are harmful, but to say products must be “ozone-free” is over the top. Products that emit some ozone include electric motors, refrigerators, televisions, copy machines, UV lights, dishwashers, projectors, hair dryers, industrial and commercial lighting and transformers, to name a few, and Mother Nature makes ozone with lightning and sunlight. Most scientists believe ozone is nature’s way of cleaning the air. This is why the outdoor air after a thunderstorm smells so clean. Just what is ozone? Ozone is a pale blue gas that is actually an oxygen molecule with a third atom. Oxygen is O2 and ozone is O3. Ozone is a strong oxidizer that is widely used in water and food purification and commercial and industrial air purification. First, we need to understand that ozone is all around us in nature. Listed are some typical ozone levels. Typical Ozone Levels in PPM .003 - .015 Ozone Odor Detecting Range .005 - .01 Heavy Forest Country Air .02 - .05 Outdoor Air after Lightning .003 - .08 UV Light bulb (stick lights) <.04 OSHA Safety Limit for Indoor Air <.05 FDA Safety Limit for Medical Devices (Indoor) <.05 California EPA for Air Cleaning Devices (Indoor) <.12 EPA Limit for City Air 1.0 Human Tolerance Level RGF’s Guardian Air line (both PHI and REME) have been vigorously tested by in-house RGF R&D Engineers and outside by third party labs, government agencies, universities and major Fortune 500 clients including: FDA, Federal Food Safety Service, ETL, TUV, UL and Kansas State University, to name a few. Results are always in the .01 ppm range or well below, about one-fifth the FDA and California safety limits. In a one-year study by Disney Hotels, ambient room ozone levels were actually lower in rooms with PHI than in rooms without. Accordingly, RGF’s Guardian Air line is as non ozone as you can get. It will allow engineers to spec RGF products into their projects. www.rgfairpurification.com 30th Anniversary Issue New Technology for 2015 2 REME uses a brand new super hydrophilic catalyst, which allows for much higher water absorption from the ambient air and also offers substantially increased surface area for the photocatalytic reactive surfaces. To activate this new catalyst, we have added a brand new advanced oxidation pathway that uses targeted ultra sonic energy. The ultra sonic energy creates sonolysis reactions which in turn release higher than 95% of the absorbed water vapor that is held by this new super catalyst. The concentrated water vapor that is then released internally to the AOP reaction chamber is transformed into hydro-peroxides by the REME's advanced oxidation reaction pathways. Created in-situ during the formation of this new super hydrophilic material is near 100% anatase crystal titanium dioxide. In addition to the photo reactive catalyst, we have also added cerium and other catalyst enhancers to further increase the AOP reaction speeds. The included cerium along with other specific ceramic materials create a structural support matrix 2 that is also unique to this new catalytic material. The new REME technology in addition to being much more reactive and producing much higher amounts of hydro-peroxides, will also have the added benefit of being capable of deterring nuisance pests. Micrograph of coating material 1000x Magnification RGF’s Air Purifying Billboard Mouse Chamber Using a double blind protocol, we have already started 2 quantifying the pest deterrent effect of the new REME units with both mouse and insect studies. Shown below is a photo of one of the tests being performed for evaluating the emitted ultrasonic energies effect on a mouse and insect habitation. Preliminary tests show over 80% effectiveness. RGF has installed a billboard on its 45 foot container that not only advertises the company but also purifies the air. By coating a section of the substrate with their proprietary, patent-pending advanced oxidation catalyst, the combination of UV light from the sun and the moisture in the air produces an advanced oxidation plasma which oxidizes pollutants present in the air. A new product for 2015. 17 30th Anniversary Issue NEW HVAC Test Chamber RGF unveils the newest addition to its already expansive inhouse lab testing capabilities: a brand new ASHRAE compliant HVAC testing chamber. This state-of-the-art air testing apparatus will allow RGF to test its newest products while still in development, as well as all existing HVAC IAQ products to both the current and future ASHRAE HVAC testing standards, including ASHRAE 52.2 (Tests for efficiency of removing air particles), ASHRAE 145.2 (Tests for efficiency of removing gaseous contaminants including VOCs), ASHRAE SPC 185.2 (Tests UV lamps in a duct environment for delivered irradiance levels), ASHRAE SPC 185.1 (Tests for a UV units ability to inactivate airborne microorganisms traveling through an HVAC duct. Note: This standard is currently proposed, it is not yet published). RGF's brand new apparatus is constructed of chemically inert stainless steel, making it ideal for all the particle, VOC, and microbial challenge testing. Its modular design adds the capability to test both single pass and multiple pass test scenarios. In addition to this new ASHRAE compliant test unit, RGF has also upgraded its physical test and data logging measuring equipment to include a second multi-channel laser particle counter, as well as a new high-performance air analyzer with the capability of isolating and measuring specific VOC gases to accuracies in the very low parts per billion. This new and expanded testing capability is a direct complement to RGF's already existing in-house testing, including our own UL-867 IAQ testing chamber, a dedicated wet laboratory which is used for both water, food, and air microbial and contamination testing. With dedicated equipment for specific tasks, i.e. microbial collection, incubation and numeration, photo microscopy, AOP efficiency testing via light absorption testing, micro balances for measuring hydroscopic absorptions to as fine as 1/10,000 of a gram, humidity and heat test chambers, fume hoods, as well as an in-house complement of staff scientists and engineers (including mechanical, nuclear and aero space engineering, as well as biology). We, at RGF, are very excited about both the recently released and also the proposed new ASHRAE UV standards. These standards will literally shed light on just how poorly the current low-cost stick lights that pervade the IAQ market today actually perform on treating airborne contaminates. With standardized test results, both specifying engineers and educated consumers will finally be given the tools to make informed choices on the available air treatment technologies. Polar Wind TM TM RGF announces the new Polar Wind quad polar ionization product family. Designed as a low cost treatment option for both mini-split air treatment applications, as well as in duct air treatment. The units will be available with 80-240 volts (50/60 Hz) switching input power as well as 24 VAC. The mini-split model attaches directly to the units top (similar to our current PHI offering), but is much smaller and will have a much lower cost. The magnetic mount duct unit is very easy to install. It is simply attached (via its very strong magnetic base) to any suitable metal surface within the HVAC unit or duct. The unique design of the duct unit utilizes the Bernoulli's air foil effect for enhanced active mixing of the charged ions into the moving airstream.
