Reflections from
Nicaragua
by Marlene & Doug De Zeeuw
1) How did you sense God calling you to “get up and
go” to on this trip?
That call began when we first heard Harlan Van Oort speak
about his experiences in Bluefields some 7-8 years ago.
Then we had the opportunity to meet Adrian and
Bernardeth when they were back visiting a few years ago.
The more we heard about their ministry, the more we
wanted to go. We felt nudged to go. We learned that visiting during the summer months was not encouraged
because of the monsoon season. We truly thought we
would not be able to go until we retired from teaching.
When this opportunity came to go to Bluefields during the
Christmas break, we felt God was saying, “Here you go.
Get yourselves signed up.” So we did and trusted that God
would use us as He needed.
2) How did you see God at work in the far-off city of
Bluefields?
Everywhere. Seriously. We saw His hand in everything that
we encountered: from the airport official who walked us
across the airport parking lot in Managua to make sure we
made it safely to our hotel on the first night to our driver
Frank and his family to Miss Frieda and her staff who fed
us delicious meals to the staff that works at the Comedor
and the Tabitha Houses to the children that came to VBS.
It was a great privilege and joy to see how God is working
through Adrian and Bernardeth. This couple possesses skill
sets that work so well together. We gained a better understanding of how the ministry they are called to has impacted those around them. Watching them at work was like
watching a stone be dropped into the water and seeing the
rings that continue to be created. Their ministry has a
ripple effect in Bluefields. What a beautiful thing! God’s
presence was seen in the children we served, the houses of
worship we attended, and in the people we met. We were
blessed beyond blessed.
(continued on inside page.)
American Reformed Church gathers together to be transformed by Jesus to transform the world. As followers of Jesus Christ,
we have been called by the Holy Spirit to worship God, know God in community with others, and serve God by serving others.

3) Now that you are back here, how do your experiences on this trip transform or change your
life back here in NW Iowa?
We have a greater appreciation
for the joy found in relationships
with those around us. Daily we
look at pictures of the kids we
worked with there as well as pray
for Adrian and Bernardeth and
those that help them. Each Sunday we picture the congregations
meeting in Bluefields and remember the joyous singing they
brought to worship – the beauty
in the opportunity to glorify God.
We are already contemplating
when can we go back and, in the meantime, the best
ways we can support Adrian and Bernardeth in their
ministry.

On a Journey with Jonah
When we hear the name of the prophet Jonah, we
immediately think “big fish” or “whale”. But guess
what? The story that is recorded in the book of Jonah
has very little to do with a big fish. In fact, the story
of Jonah has very little to with Jonah. Rather, it is a
story about God: a God who calls; a God who pursues; and a God who is more merciful than we could
ever imagine. We want to invite you to prepare each
week by reading a short portion of the book of Jonah
in preparation for Sunday’s message.
As we continue our Jonah sermon series, this week
you can prepare by reading Jonah 3:1-10 before next
Sunday, February 8.
Let’s join Jonah on a journey,
learning more about God along the way.
PLEASE NOTE: If a pastoral concern or need arises, it
child in the sanctuary by 8:45 AM to rehearse.
12:00 PM CAAPP Certification training will be held
in the Fellowship Hall. Please sign-up at the Welcome
Center.
Hospitalized:
*Hans Tvedte (Orange City)
*Don Vander Wel (St. Luke’s Hospital, Sioux City, on
Wednesday, January 28 for knee surgery).
Revelation 21:4 “He will wipe every tear from their eyes.
Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain
will be no more, for the first things have passed away.”
Sunday, February 8
9:30 AM Hands of Praise will perform with the
choir during the worship service. Please have your

Valerie to Get Up and Go
with SSP
Hello, I am Valerie Heaton, a senior at
Northwestern College. You may have
seen me around ARC the last three
years or in the choir the last two years.
This spring, I am going on a Spring
Service Project (SSP) through NWC to
Lindale, Texas, and I need your help. I
did this SSP two years ago, and we
helped around Calvary Commission,
the seminary for ex-prisoners, and the church Calvary
created. We also worshipped in a men’s prison. Not only
were we a benefit to the men and women there, but it
was a life changing experience for all of us on the trip.
Your financial help and prayers are greatly appreciated
as my team heads to Texas again. Please see me at the
desk in the lobby after church for more information,
stories from my last trip, and a chance to donate. Thank
you and God bless.

Expresses Thanks
“Arigato! Thank you! The 13 Japanese students at NWC
had such a positive experience at ARC. So many
welcomed them to church, Sandie & Philip included them
in Sunday school, Sampsons, Langtons, Fynaardts, Burgs
and Tolsmas hosted them for lunch, the Hickmans for the
horse and wagon ride, and Rosalyn toured them around
ARC and shared God’s love with them. Thank you, ARC,
for your Christian witness and welcome!”
