Communion. If you are not a communicant and would like to receive a blessing,
please inform the clergy by bringing this leaflet to the Altar Rail.
COLLECT FOR THE DAY
O God, who knowest us to be set in the midst of so many and great dangers, that
by reason of the frailty of our nature we cannot always stand upright; Grant to us
such strength and protection, as may support us in all dangers, and carry us
through all temptations; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
OLD TESTAMENT READING – Psalm 78: 1-8
Give ear, O my people, to my teaching; incline your ears to the words of my
mouth.
I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old,
things that we have heard and known, that our ancestors have told us.
We will not hide them from their children; we will tell to the coming generation the
glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.
He established a decree in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he
commanded our ancestors to teach to their children;
that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and rise up and
tell them to their children,
so that they should set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but
keep his commandments;
and that they should not be like their ancestors, a stubborn and rebellious
generation, a generation whose heart was not steadfast, whose spirit was not
faithful to God.
GOSPEL READING – Mark 1: 21-28
The Holy Gospel is written in the 1st chapter of the Gospel according to Mark,
beginning at the 21st verse.
They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue
and taught. They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one
having authority, and not as the scribes. Just then there was in their synagogue a
man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, ‘What have you to do with us, Jesus
of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of
God.’ But Jesus rebuked him, saying, ‘Be silent, and come out of him!’ And the
unclean spirit, throwing him into convulsions and crying with a loud voice, came
out of him. They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, ‘What is
this? A new teaching—with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and
they obey him.’ At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding
region of Galilee.
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
MOTET: Simile est regnum caelorum
Simile est [enim] regnum caelorum homini patri familias, qui exiit primo mane
conducere operarios in vineam suam.
For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went
out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard.
And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into
his vineyard.
And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the
marketplace,
And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will
give you.
So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the
labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.
for many be called, but few chosen.
Music: Crostóbal de Morales (1500-1553)
MATTINS ANTHEM TEXT
O for a closer walk with God,
A calm and heavenly frame;
A light to shine upon the road
That leads me to the Lamb!
Return, O holy Dove, return,
Sweet messenger of rest;
I hate the sins that made thee mourn,
And drove thee from my breast.
So shall my walk be close with God,
Calm and serene my frame;
So purer light shall mark the road
That leads me to the Lamb.
Words: William Cowper
Music: Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924)

NOTICEBOARD
Cathedral Pilgrimage to Walsingham
Canon Andrew will be leading a pilgrimage to Walsingham on 15-17 May this year.
Walsingham is the focal point of reflection in this country on the Incarnation of
Christ, through Mary his Mother. The weekend will allow time for worship, prayer
and meeting fellow pilgrims as well as enjoying the beauty of North Norfolk. For
further details please contact Canon Andrew [email protected]. We need to know by Wednesday 11 February so that we can secure
the places. For booking please contact Richard North on 01252 722095 or
[email protected].
Community Roll membership
Every three years we update the Community Roll to ensure membership and
contact details are current. Members of the Community Roll will have received an
email or letter asking for a response by 13 February 2015, to confirm if they wish
to renew their membership for a further 3 year period. If you are unsure and would
like to check if you are on the existing Roll please ask Trish Lambert, Community
Roll Officer, after the Sunday morning Eucharist or at [email protected], or the Virgers who have a copy in the Sacristy. If you are not yet on
the Roll and would like to have your name added to the updated Roll, please
complete a form which can be found on the table at the back of the nave. To vote
in the forthcoming elections in May you must be a member of the updated
Community Roll.
Healing Services
On the first Saturday of each month, a Healing Eucharist is held at which we offer
the opportunity for anointing and the laying on of hands. The next service will take
place on Saturday 7 February at 9 am in the Lady Chapel.
Second Sunday Foodbank Collection
The Foodbank thank the community for their generous donations. For this month’s
collection, they have requested tins of rice pudding, tins of custard, tinned tuna
and tinned meat, 1Kg bags of sugar, jam, tomato ketchup, washing up liquid and
washing powder. Please bring your donations to next Sunday morning’s Cathedral
Eucharist.

Cathedral Close for cake and conversation: Sunday 8 February at 16.00; Sunday 1
March at 16.00; Sunday, 29 March at 16.00. For more information contact
[email protected].
Ash Wednesday Eucharist – 18 February 2015 at 7pm
As we begin our journey through Lent, leading us to the foot of the cross and
ultimately to the resurrection, this Eucharist sets the focus on reflection and selfexamination. The imposition of ashes as a sign of penitence is a central act during
the Eucharist, which includes seasonal music sung by the lay clerks of the
Cathedral Choir.
The Theological Book Group - Sunday 22 February at 11.30
The book group will discuss David Ford’s recent book The Drama of Living: Being
Wise in the Spirit. David is one of the leading theologians of his generation; and a
thinker who invites us to engage with faith with heart and mind. In this book he
explores how we respond to the complexity of daily life, by drawing on John’s
Gospel, poetry and his own experience. Copies of the book will be available from
the Cathedral Bookshop. More information from Canon Julie Gittoes
[email protected].
Lent Talks 2015: This year’s series is entitled 'Do not be afraid' to coincide with
the exhibition by the artist Catherine Clancy of the same title. Clancy's work
grapples with 'The Dark Night of the Soul' and 'The Return of the Spirit', influenced
by poets including T S Eliot, St John of The Cross and the biblical tradition.
 26 February: The Very Revd Dianna Gwilliams - 'Be strong, take heart'
 5 March: Canon Derek Holbird - 'The clouds ye so much dread'
 12 March: The Revd Dr Steve Summers - 'All things bright and beautiful?'
 19 March: Canon Dr Andrew Bishop - 'Ark from the ocean's roar'
 26 March: Canon Dr Julie Gittoes - 'All my hope on God is founded'
Each of the speakers will engage with themes that emerge from Catherine
Clancy's work in a way which will resonate with the season of Lent, and the
challenges of our Christian discipleship. Full details are available on the Cathedral
website or contact Canon Julie Gittoes [email protected].
Bishop of Guildford’s First Sunday at the Cathedral – 1 March 2015
Bishop Andrew will preside and preach at both the Cathedral Eucharist and Choral
Evensong on Sunday 1 March: the Eucharist that day will be at the nave altar
using Common Worship, Order One. Congregational coffee will be served in the
nave after the Eucharist and there will be no service of Choral Mattins. Instead
Choral Mattins will unusually be transferred to the second Sunday, 8 March; coffee
on this day will be in the Refectory before the regular second Sunday carvery
lunch.
Friends’ Social Evening ‘The Daily Sing’ – Tuesday 10 March 2015
Hear our boy choristers sing for your delight, enjoy a delicious supper and learn
about the amazing education a ‘chorister’ receives which remains unique – from
the cricket pitch to the choir stalls, from French lessons to concerts in New York,
from the art room to a live radio broadcast. How does it all fit together? Katherine
Dienes-Williams, Organist and Master of the Choristers, interviews Canon Clare
Turnbull, Head of the Choir School, Lanesborough School, and gets to grips with
what it is like to be the Head of a highly flourishing boys prep school in Guildford
which is choir school to Guildford Cathedral, and one of the national network of
Cathedral Choir Schools, the Choir Schools’ Association. Join us for what
promises to be a fabulous evening of entertainment and inspiration. The evening is
to be held in the Cathedral Refectory and the two course supper will follow the boy
choristers singing. Cost is £18 for Friends and £2 for non-Friends. Doors will open
at 6.30pm – the entertainments starts at 7pm. Please pick up a booking form from
the information table.
