The Abundance of Rain at First Baptist Church of Glenarden in 2014 January 28, 2015 Page 1 of 7 Below you will find several accomplishments and highlights from 2014: Individuals coming forward – 3,622 Accepted Christ – 2,833 Baptized – 881 Received Right Hand of Fellowship – 1,240 288 persons/families were given benevolence assistance 101 missions/ministries and worldwide organizations were supported The Share Ministry distributed 1166 boxes of food. The Feed the Hungry Ministry prepared 5,000 lunches that were distributed in the metropolitan area. 4,300 Thanksgiving baskets, which included three elementary schools, were distributed. We certified 59 new altar counselors including a 14 year old FBCG member. Our Bible Institute enrolled over 1,500 students. We continued to have a strong social media presence with 25,133 followers on our FBCG Facebook page and 6,601 followers on Twitter. We had thousands of people viewing our services online: o We had a total of 461,250 viewers for Sunday worship services and Tuesday evening Bible study. Our total income for 2014 was $31,986,247. Our resourceful staff found new ways to reduce costs in 2014: o The Facility Department upgraded lights at the Ministry Center to LED lighting. We received an $85,000 grant from the state of Maryland and BGE rebate for $109,000. Projected cost savings of $90,000 per year. o They also replaced aging heating and air conditioning units with energy efficient units. We received a $197,000 grant from the state of Maryland and BGE rebate of $59,000. Estimated cost savings of $52,300 per year. They were also diligent in accomplishing several projects in 2014: o The Facilities Department repaired broken concrete curbs and sidewalks and repaired and painted the exterior of the Ministry Center. o At the Worship Center, they also painted the exterior support buildings, repaired broken concrete curbs and sidewalks, resurfaced the road around the warehouse and cleaned up the landscape areas on the Benhke side. o The Finance Department expanded our giving process to accept tithes and offerings via credit and debit card. o The IT Department upgraded and expanded the FBCG phone system. They installed a filtering system to prevent hacking and breaches to FBCG email. Working in conjunction with Marketing, they launched the FBCG App and text giving. They also upgraded hardware and software on the kiosks in Gospel Kids Town The Abundance of Rain at First Baptist Church of Glenarden in 2014 January 28, 2015 Page 2 of 7 o The Construction Department has substantially completed approximately one-quarter mile of the new access roadway providing the church with four lanes of vehicular travel to and from Oak Grove Road. o Deacon Stanley Featherstone is now heading our Strategic Projects. We have been asked to serve as community partner in the redevelopment of the Glenarden Apartments. Those apartments are being demolished and the County desires to see a quality redevelopment that will be sustained over time. We are working with the developer to define our role in this project. Children & Youth Department: o Seven Boy Scouts earned the “Eagle” Award, the highest honor for a Boy Scout. The recipients were #47 Jalen Thompson, #48 Nicholas Heyward, #49 Aaron McCoy, #50 Darius Lashley, #51 Travon Joseph, #52 Justice Robinson and #53 Jared Robinson (age 13 who is also the youngest Eagle Scout of the Troop). o The Cub and Tiger Scouts are the largest pack and troop in Prince George’s County. o Claire Moore received the Gold award which is the highest award for Girl Scouts. o 35 Junior Scouts received the Bronze award which is the highest award for junior scouts. o We held our 39th annual Harvest Festival with over 4,500 attendees with support from 291 volunteers. o Reverend Jonathan Queen is our new Youth Pastor and his wife Lenia serves along side of him. He is also the Director of MERGE. o The Merge Retreat had 320 youth attending with 150 volunteers. Education & Training Department: o Sunday School continues to serve over 700 children and adults on Sunday mornings. There has been tremendous growth in the adult and young adult classes and now they have added a noon adult class. o Vacation Bible School ministered to over 1000 children and adults supported by over 100 teachers and volunteers. There were over 40 decisions for Christ during VBS. o The Cancer Support Ministry, along with other FBCG members, participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on the National Mall, and they raised more than $100,000 for breast cancer research. o The annual Back to School Prayer Rally attracted record attendance of over 1500. We distributed over 600 backpacks stuffed with school supplies! Family Life Department: o The Love Tours hosted by Women’s Conference were held at two middle schools and two high schools. We were able to share the love of God with over 1600 girls. o The Love Tour was designed to help girls understand the need for self-love and love for others. o The schools have asked that we develop a similar program for young men. We are collaborating with Rev. Queen to develop this program. It is our desire to go back into the schools in 2015 with a program for boys as well as continuing the Love Tour for girls. The Abundance of Rain at First Baptist Church of Glenarden in 2014 January 28, 2015 Page 3 of 7 o The Domestic Violence Ministry and the Men’s Group have partnered with the State’s Attorney's Office of Prince Georges County to address the issue of domestic violence in our county. o Hagar Ministry has partnered with Capitol Hill Pregnancy Center, St. Ann Center for Children, Youth and Family Mentoring Program and Pregnancy Clinic Ministry of Annapolis, Bowie/Crofton and Severna Park to provide mentoring support to teen moms. They recently piloted their first group session on “Healthy Relationships” for teen moms, teen dads and the parents of parenting teens. They are also forging a partnership with The Department of Social Services, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and The Bureau Chief of Foster Care and Adoption. o Prosperity Partners participants were able to eliminate more than $100,000 in debt this year. o Men's Ministry (MFC) yearly cookout/car show attracted a record crowd, due to this explosive growth the event is moving to the Worship Center in 2015. o Samson's Dilemma and JAG continued their collaborative work with Central Union Mission and have impacted the lives of hundreds of men. The relationship with Central Union Mission has deepened to the extent that Men Following Christ will initiate a three month mentoring program for the men (at the mission) on matters such as drugs, homelessness and abandonment. The program is slated to begin in April 2015. o Our Discipleship programs had 497 graduates. Helps Department: o The Card Ministry shared the love of God with members and friends by sending over 5,000 sympathy and get well cards and over 200 cards of encouragement. o The Deaf Ministry sponsored their first Deaf Concert in July called “Joy in the Afternoon” with well over 100 persons in attendance. o Members of the Flower Ministry spent over 200 hours decorating and beautifying both the Ministry and Worship centers. o The Transportation Ministry faithfully shuttled FBCG members and guests from nearby Metro stations, local college campuses and the far recesses of the parking lot. The ministry transported nearly 9,000 guests during 2014. Missions Department: o For the second year, the biggest church-wide collaboration has been the Thanksgiving Basket Giveaway. We gave away 4,300 baskets to needy people in the community. o To improve this event, we launched a micro-website that provided online registration for the very first time. Volunteers were also able to register online and people could make donations to this event on line. o We offered curb-side service to ages 65+ and individuals with disabilities. o We are grateful to over 1400 volunteers that made this a huge success! o Internationally, as we continue our 10-year partnership with World Vision in Peru, we made two short-term church engagement trips in August and December. o We are still in Phase 1, trust and relationship building, but have begun to engage in ministry alongside the Peruvians. We have witnessed tremendous changes in the Huaral District since March 2013. The Abundance of Rain at First Baptist Church of Glenarden in 2014 January 28, 2015 Page 4 of 7 o During 2014, worked with educators to develop a multi-year school reform plan, conducted half-day training and had the opportunity to do climate assessment in the schools. o Another significant highlight of this year’s trips was the opportunity for us to participate in hemoglobin testing and de-worming of the children. We provided some training for Pastors and church leaders for the first time. The community has been energized through this partnership and they have a mind to work. Through the resources we provide, El Angel’s school has been turned into a productive learning environment and its community center has been built; Nuevo Huaral dug a water well and improved its community center and Contigo Peru built a community center and also improved its school. o While there has been much unrest in both, Ukraine and Burkina Faso, West Africa, our missionaries Tania Martin, Marian Nembhard and Samantha Smith are doing well. God is using them to impact and change lives in those countries. They are working with children, orphans, and facilitating discipleship training for women. o Nationally, we traveled to New York and Detroit. Missionaries assisted in rebuilding neighborhoods by completing projects designed to improve lives and neighborhoods by painting homes (inside and out), repairing porches and garages, changing locks on homes, installing railings for disabled homeowners, cleaning gutters, and removing weeds, trash and debris from vacant lots and boarded-up homes. Not only did the teams change the physical appearance of neighborhoods, but they brought hope to the hearts of many people. They were able to witness of the goodness of Jesus, pray with people and lead individuals to Christ! o Locally, we are hitting the streets of the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. We met needs at the Red Miles House, Evergreen Senior Community, Open Door Women’s Shelter, Children of Mine Center, Forestville Pregnancy Center, New Endeavors transitional facility for women, So Others May Eat Home, Patuxent River Health and Rehabilitation Center, and eight prison facilities. o We delivered meals to the sick and the homeless in S.E. Washington, D.C. We assisted clients in making healthy choices for their unborn babies and provided residents of several facilities with hand-made crochet shawls and Afghans. o At the DC General Homeless Shelter, the largest shelter in DC, housing over 900 people, we held two Agape Closets. The Agape Closet is like a mini department store inside the shelter. Residents can shop for clothing, shoes, pampers, books, and small household items. More than 100 families were helped through the Agape Closet. o By partnering with Prince George’s County’s Christmas in April, 118 FBCG volunteers helped refurbish and repair six homes owned by seniors who are members of FBCG. Music Department: o Ministries collaborated with several activities; the Evangelism and Puppet ministries went to Manor Care Nursing Home to celebrate a resident's 100th birthday. o The Liturgical Dance Ministry held its first concert titled, "One Body, Many Parts." More than 700 people attended the concert, and almost 100 DVDs were pre-ordered. o Puppet Ministry attended a creative festival held at Tabernacle Church where one of the puppeteers placed for a silver award. o The Sunbeams choir was invited by the 55th Sustainment Brigade, Department of Army, for their Family, Friends and Community Holiday Event. The Abundance of Rain at First Baptist Church of Glenarden in 2014 January 28, 2015 Page 5 of 7 o The Women's Day choir ended their annual ministry event with Gaye Arbuckle who introduced a new song "It's Something About God's Grace" that exploded in the atmosphere. o The Praise Team supported the Washington Prayer Gathering on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, Washington, DC. o The Music & Arts Department along with the Family Life Ministries Department participated in Operation Christmas Child - 70 Ministries supported and donated 861 shoe boxes and $6,000. 2014 Ministry Collaborations: o 85% of FBCG Ministries participated in collaborative outreach initiatives o Over 1,500 people were impacted/serviced through the non church-wide outreach collaboration initiatives and 6,764 people were impacted through church wide initiatives for a total of 8,264 people being impacted. Throughout the year, members and employees were honored for their services to the community: o Stan Richards received the 2014 Neighborhood Awards for Best Community Leader. o Fred Johnson (employee and member) received full certification from the National Concierge Association. o Bobby Freeman received the Ministry Leader of the Year Award from the United Death Ministry which is a global religious based organization whose mission is to perform the work of ministry worldwide. We are blessed to have vibrant and active church ministries. Here are a few of their 2014 year-end highlights: o The Family Life Department launched four new ministries: Seniors on the Go – a ministry for seniors that offers evening event alternatives for those that still work or have daytime involvements. Senior Wednesday - established as a ministry for seniors to obtain various senior resources. They receive the resources through various speakers that come to the church along with going on trips to visit different resources in the community. Men of Strength – this ministry provides handy man practical needs for the elderly and widows in our church family. Alzheimer/Dementia – a support group for Alzheimer/Dementia caregivers SHABACH! MINISTRIES, INC.: o Our Chairman of the Board, Stephen Neal received the 2014 FBCG Vendor’s Award. He was one of several individuals honored for his outstanding advice, counsel, assistance, community service and products and support services to FBCG. Pastor Jenkins expressed his appreciation and gratitude for the contributions made to help ensure the success of the ministry of FBCG. o Our SHABACH! Education Division has grown to include over 400 students in our preschool, school age, homeschool and before and after care department. During the The Abundance of Rain at First Baptist Church of Glenarden in 2014 January 28, 2015 Page 6 of 7 2013-14 school year, more than 75% of our 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students successfully completed a solo flight in our STEM Aviation program this school year and 34 students received aviation awards. o SHABACH! Christian Academy participated in the STEM Blast Off event hosted by Congresswoman Donna Edwards in March. o Our kindergartners averaged in the 96th percentile in reading for the year and 97th percentile in math. In SHABACH!’s Community Services Division o The SHABACH! Summer Youth Employment program has welcomed back four of its previous Employer Partners. We praise God that First Baptist Church of Glenarden is still our largest employer, hiring 25 of the 29 students in the program this year! o Over 500 people participated in our SHABACH! Career Readiness Program where our participants were able to gain valuable career enhancement skills in order to find new jobs and get promotions. o The SHABACH! Opportunity Fair held September 13, 2014, exposed young people who are currently attending middle school as well as high school to local colleges and universities. It also provided employment opportunities to the unemployed and the underemployed, as well as resource information for the community. We had over 250 people in attendance. Some of the Fair’s sponsors were K. Neal International Trucks, Inc., Simpro Development, Frontline Development and Giant Food. Our SHABACH! Emergency Empowerment Center helped 44 families transition from shelters to new homes with household products such as linen, toasters, coffee makers, etc. o Additionally, this year, nearly 40,000 people received assistance from the Empowerment Center. o Since 2012, SHABACH! has assisted in donating bags of groceries to help families in need in our communities at Thanksgiving. This year, in partnership with WHUR radio networks, we purchased, received, sorted and distributed 1,800 bags of groceries and Thanksgiving Turkey Baskets. We exceeded our goal to feed over 6,600 people for Thanksgiving by meeting the needs of over 9,500 men, women and children. SMI/FBCG Collaborations o This year SMI collaborated with FBCG in several ventures: The Health Expo The Coat Drive which was led by the SHABACH! Empowerment Center with the support of 14 ministries in the Family Life Department – collected and distributed approximately 1,000 coats WHUR Food2Feed Initiative which raised nearly $80,000 2014 College Student Transitional Campus Support Program which provided linen, toasters, coffee makers, etc. to new and returning college students. The ECFA (Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability) announced the accreditation of SHABACH! Ministries, Inc. o ECFA accreditation is based on the ECFA Seven Standards of Responsible Stewardship, including financial accountability, transparency, and sound board governance. The Abundance of Rain at First Baptist Church of Glenarden in 2014 January 28, 2015 Page 7 of 7 o When an organization is accredited by ECFA, it demonstrates its willingness to follow the model of biblical accountability. Below is a report of our accomplished 2014 Goals: o Renovation of our campus at 403 Brightseat Road is near completion which will provide new office spaces for SHABACH!, Project Bridges and the Collective Empowerment Group CEG; and new storage, distribution and training spaces for the SHABACH! Empowerment Center. Full occupancy expected the first quarter of 2015. o The design for the 63,200 gross square feet multi-use Family Life Center facility was completed and the drawings were submitted to Prince George’s County for permit review. This contemporary structure will provide three full court basketball courts with a multi-functional platform; adjacent practice rooms; an overhead walking track; and multipurpose athletic and meeting areas. Early discussions with contractors are already taking place in anticipation of starting construction by second quarter 2015. The Denver Seminary’s spring semester will start on Friday, Jan. 30 with the remaining Bethel students. They will have three classes, Theology, Leadership and Romans – Revelations, which is the New Testament Survey. The fall semester classes will start in August. The available classes will be Master of Arts and Leadership, Master of Divinity and Certificate of Biblical and Theological Studies. We have launched a Social Media Ministry.
