Yet many great scientists were led by the Bible to some outstanding scientific discoveries. Isambard K. Brunnel began building his giant ship, the Great Britain, in 1843, following the dimensions of Noah’s ark: 322 feet by 51 feet by 32 feet, a ratio of 30:5:3. When it was completed, it was made more for floating than sailing, strong enough to withstand a turbulent ocean voyage but not headed anywhere in a particular hurry, just like the ark. Brunnel’s success inspired shipbuilders during World War II to employ the same ratio to build the “the ugly duckling,” a vessel designed to carry tremendous amounts of cargo. Around the same time Brunnel was building his ship, American Naval officer Matthew Fontaine Maury was doing extensive research that would make him one of the world’s first oceanographers and enable the laying of the first undersea cable. Until Maury, knowledge of prevailing winds and currents had advanced little from Columbus. By his own admission, it was the Bible that led him to his discoveries: ‘‘The rule is, never to forget who is the Author of the great volume which nature spreads out before us, and always to remember that the same Being is the author of the book which revelation holds up to us.” Maury studied Psalm 8, “the fish of the sea, and whatever swims the paths of the seas,” and Ecclesiastes “Shifting south, then north, back and forth shifts the wind, constantly shifting its course.” He explored the theory that the Bible was revealing that ocean wind and sea currents formed pathways that could be located and plotted. Compiling hundreds of thousands of old ships’ logs and tracking where “drift bottles” (weighed down enough to sink slightly below the water so winds did not alter their course) washed ashore, he carefully documented speed and direction of ocean wind and sea currents. He discovered that indeed the winds “whirl about continually”, rotating in huge circles in a clockwise direction in the southern hemisphere, and counter-clockwise in the northern hemisphere. His detailed maps of his findings could be used to plot voyages that minimized the time of passage. In 1851, the most technologically-advanced American clippers, The Flying Cloud and Challenger, competed in an epic sailing contest. Departing from New York to San Francisco across 13,225 miles on a trip that would normally take up to 5 months, The Flying Cloud clocked in at 89 days and 21 hours! Matched crew for crew, shipbuilder for shipbuilder, The Flying Cloud had a secret weapon the Challenge did not have: Eleanor Creesy. Eleanor, the wife of The Flying Cloud's captain, was the ship's navigator and an early adopter of Maury's work in oceanography and meteorology. Sea captains around the world took notice and by 1855, the use of Maury's maps had reduced the average sailing time for traveling vessels from every continent. Today, the stream through a picturesque and historic gorge in Virginia is called Maury River, and the winding road from Lexington to Goshen is Maury Highway. Halfway through the pass, under the shadow of a cliff, stands a granite monument, dedicated in 1923 by the US Naval Academy and the State of Virginia. It reads: Matthew Fontaine Maury, Pathfinder of the Seas The Genius who first snatched from the ocean and atmosphere the secret of their laws. Every Mariner for countless ages as he takes his chart to shape his course across the seas will think of thee. His inspiration Holy Writ: Psalms 8 and 107, Verses 8, 23 and 24, Ecclesiastes Chap. 1, Verse 8. What’s Inside? Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Job 7:1-4, 6-7 But the night is long, and I am full of tossing till the dawn. Psalms 147:1-6 He determines the number of the stars, he gives to all of them their names. 1 Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23 I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. Mark 1:29-39 And in the morning, a great while before day, he rose and went out to a lonely place, and there he prayed. John McGovern at St. Mark’s 2012 Irish Night captures everything about him! There is that ever-present smile which reflected his joy-filled Irish heart. There is one of his consecrated hands which faithfully served Our Lord–a hand that anointed the sick, baptized babies, greeted parishioners and embraced the grieving. Look closer and you will see that his hand left an imprint on everyone he touched. Of all good times that e'er we shared, I leave to you fond memory; And for all the friendship that e'er we had I ask you to remember me; And when you sit and stories tell, I'll be with you and help recall; So fill to me the parting glass, God bless, and joy be with you all. -from the Parting Glass !
