Simply Beautiful.” This relatively small island country consists of only 240 square miles, 24 miles north to south, 14 miles east to west at the farthest points, with a population of 185,000, over 60% Catholic: one island, one country, one Archdiocese. This tropical paradise with mountains and lush forests really is “simply beautiful”– so beautiful that this small island has 3 “Sandals” resorts! (I flew there on Monday and I was the only male on board who did not have his wife of two days with him! All the ladies were comparing rings and telling wedding dress stories.) Honeymooners and other visitors make tourism a major industry. Yet I went there not for the tropical resorts but because of Church related events. I went there for the first time for the installation of their new Archbishop Robert Rivas, OP, in February, 2008. For over twenty years our St. Bartholomew Parish in Miramar had been supporting him in his previous Diocese of Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines. That is the poorest English speaking country in the hemisphere with over 40% unemployment. With few social services available from the government, the Church must support care for children with AIDS, a hospital for the severely handicapped, suicide prevention programs, soup kitchens, etc. Bishop Rivas visited our Miramar parish every Lent to solicit our support. My father Vincent organized a mission group from the parish to send the diocese money every month to pay the salaries of priests; many individual parishes cannot support them. When Bishop Rivas was installed as Archbishop in St. Lucia, my father and I went with other people from the parish. You may have seen Archbishop Rivas last year when he came in January, 2014, for my father’s funeral. St. Lucia is more economically stable than St. Vincent and the Grenadines, yet the economic benefits of the tourism industry do not alway “trickle down” to all levels of society. The Church in St. Lucia still needs outside help to develop and support pastoral programs. I conducted an international workshop about RCIA in the summer of 2010, shortly before I came to St. Louis Church. People from different countries, islands and dioceses participated. I felt so impressed by the faith, zeal for evangelization, and commitment to Christ demonstrated by these brothers and sisters in such economically challenged situations. Some may love St. Lucia because of it tropical beauty. I have seen the face of Christ in St. Lucia’s clergy and people– “Simply Beautiful.” I was there this past week to celebrate Archbishop Rivas’ 25th anniversary as a bishop, and that celebration too was “simply beautiful.” Yours in Christ, Simplemente Bella El breve slogan publicitario lo dice al punto: “Santa Lucía. Simplemente Bella.”
