The Baptism of the Lord
January 11, 2015
All you who are thirsty,
come to the water!
— Isaiah 55:1
PAGE 3
Volume 55
Baptism of the Lord, January 11, 2015
It is fitting that today’s feast of the Baptism of
Jesus takes place at the beginning of the New Year, since
our New Year’s resolutions are just beginning to
encounter the realities of everyday life. Today’s Gospel
also represents beginnings. Besides being from the first
chapter of Mark’s Gospel, it also summarizes the
beginning of Jesus’ public ministry after thirty years of
living with his family in Nazareth.
Following Jesus’ baptism, Mark reports that “at
once Holy Spirit drove him out into the desert.” After this
40 day retreat, Mark shows how Jesus encountered the
realities of his everyday life by cramming four events into
one day, any one of which would be sufficient enough for
us to consider a full day’s work. 1. He called four
fishermen to follow him, 2. he cured a demoniac, 3. he
healed Simon Peter’s mother-in-law, and 4. in the evening
“the whole town was gathered” at his door and he cured
many who were sick.
Many of us have also returned to our busy lives
after the holiday season. Often our good intentions and
resolutions get buried under the urgent demands that
press in on us. Before we give up on our resolutions or
forget about them altogether, let us take heart from two
occurrences early in Jesus’ public life and one lesson from
a contemporary author.
First, from today’s Gospel: When Jesus came out
of the water, he heard a great affirmation from his Father,
“You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
When we begin a new task, it is important to hear God
saying this to us as well. Especially when the demands of
daily life threaten our resolve, we need to hear the voice
of God affirming us over and over, “You are my beloved
daughter (son); with you I am well pleased.”
Secondly, from Steven Covey, author of The
Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, we have the
good advice not to let the Most Urgent overcome the Most
Important. The most important things to do are what gives
strength to our lives and recharges our energies, things
like prayer, relationships and keeping our main purpose in
mind. If we only respond to the urgent needs of the
present, we will increasingly feel controlled and
powerless.
That brings us back to Jesus. While it was the
Holy Spirit that drove him out into the desert, it was for his
own good, for he needed to reaffirm his priorities,
confirming the Most Important deep in his soul before the
urgencies of a needy world pressed on him.
In fact, after that very busy day, Mark reports,
“rising very early before dawn, (Jesus) left and went off to
a deserted place, where he prayed.” Let that be a habit we
all develop in this New Year.

this special spiritual program. All are welcome!
THE WATERS OF BAPTISM
When new sod is put in, it needs constant
saturation with water. Landscapers say that this “knits”
the sod to the soil. The same when a branch is grafted
onto a tree: the poultice that joins them at the splice must
be kept wet at all times. Water is the stuff that binds the
very cells of our bodies together. No wonder religions
throughout all times and cultures have used it so
prominently. When Jesus stepped into the Jordan for
baptism, he “knit” himself to what had come before him.
By going to the Jordan, he made himself one with the
people of Israel who had crossed it into their Promised
Land. With John the Baptist, Christ wove himself into the
prophetic tradition that heralded the coming reign of God.
He had become fully human in the waters of
Mary’s womb, and by partaking in the rite of the baptism
of repentance, Jesus identified himself with our sinful, frail
humanity. It is through the waters of baptism that Christ
continues to graft new members onto his Body, the
Church; through these waters we are cleansed from sin
and filled with the promise of grace, given our destiny for
eternal life. For us, as for Jesus, it is also the waters of
baptism that inaugurate our mission to proclaim the Good
News. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

El Bautismo del Señor
11 de enero de 2015
Todos ustedes, los que

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
¿Recuerdas tu bautismo? Permítanme compartir mi
testimonio.

Jesús sanó a muchos enfermos.”
Muchas
veces, nuestras intenciones buenas y resoluciones se ahogan
bajo las exigencias urgentes que nos presionan. Antes de
abandonar nuestras resoluciones u olvidarlas, reflexionemos
algo me faltaba. Mis amigos protestantes me invitaban a
vive tu Bautismo.
