The Gift of Family Life
Dear Parishioners of Saint Andrew:
On this Sunday after Christmas the Church
celebrates the feast of the Holy Family. Like the
shepherds and magi we contemplate the wonder
of the Word made flesh in a family. As Pope
Francis recently mentioned, God chose to be born
“in a human family, that He Himself had formed”.
Speaking on the spiritual life of families, the Holy
Father continued: “Every Christian family – as
Mary and Joseph did – must first welcome Jesus,
listen to Him, speak with Him, shelter Him,
protect Him, grow with Him; and in this way,
make the world better. Let us make space in our
heart and in our days for the Lord. This is what
Mary and Joseph did, and it was not easy: how
many difficulties they had to overcome! It was
not a false or unreal family. The family of
Nazareth calls to us to rediscover the vocation and
the mission of the family, of every family. And so
what happened in those thirty years in Nazareth
can also happen to us: making love, not hate,
normal; mutual help common, instead of indifference and hostility. It is not by chance that
Nazareth means 'she who preserves', like Mary
who, as the Gospel tells us, 'treasured all these
things in her heart'. From then on, whenever
there is a family that preserves this mystery, even
if it should be at the outer reaches of the world,
the mystery of the Son of God is at work. And He
comes to save the world”.
As you may have heard, the Vatican recently
announced that Pope Francis will be visiting the
United States in September. The main purpose of
this visit is to attend the World Meeting of
Families to be held in Philadelphia. Since its
inception by Saint John Paul II in 1994, the
World Meeting of Families has strengthened the
sacred bonds of families across the globe. Held
every three years and sponsored by the Holy
See’s Pontifical Council for the Family, the
World Meeting of Families is the world’s largest
Catholic gathering of families. The theme of the
World Meeting of Families – Philadelphia 2015 is
“Love Is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive,”
emphasizing the impact of the love and life of
families on our society. In the coming months
there will be much more information about the
Meeting of Families and the Papal visit. Meanwhile, I encourage you to visit their website
www.worldmeeting2015.org and to pray the
following official prayer.
May the Lord continue to bless you and your
family with His love!

Prayer for the World Meeting of Families
God and Father of us all,
in Jesus, your Son and our Savior,
you have made us your sons and daughters
in the family of the Church.
May your grace and love
help our families in every part of the world
be united to one another in fidelity to the Gospel.
May the example of the Holy Family,
with the aid of your Holy Spirit,
guide all families, especially those most troubled,
to be homes of communion and prayer and
to always seek your truth and live in your love.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us!
No
A partir

nos has hecho tus hijos e hijas

The Holy Family Prayer
JESUS, Son of God and Son of Mary, bless our family. Graciously inspire in us the unity,
peace and mutual love that you found in your own family in the little town of Nazareth.
MARY, Mother of Jesus and our Mother, nourish our family with your faith and your love.
Keep us close to your Son, Jesus, in all our sorrows and joys.
JOSEPH, Foster-father to Jesus, guardian and spouse of Mary, keep our family safe from
harm. Help us in all times of discouragement or anxiety.
HOLY FAMILY OF NAZARETH, make our family one with you. Help us to be instruments of peace. Grant that love, strengthened by grace, may prove mightier than all the
weaknesses and trials through which our families sometimes pass. May we always have God
at the center of our hearts and homes until we are all one family, happy and at peace in our
true home with you. Amen.

acceptance and loving care for the life of the Incarnate Word, human life

As the Church contemplates Mary's motherhood, she discovers the

Gospel reading Luke 2:22, 39-40 [To be read aloud]
When the days were completed for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to
the Lord. When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth.
The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.
Brief commentary:
Merry Christmas! From the feast of the Nativity to the Feast of the Epiphany and Baptism of the Lord, the Church celebrates the
birth of the Jesus Christ, the Son of God and Savior of the world. In today’s gospel, Luke presents us the life of the young Jesus as a
simple, humble, ordinary life. Born into an observant Jewish family from the Galilean hamlet of Nazareth, Luke’s account offers us a
snapshot of the Holy Family, whose feast day we celebrate today. Rather than beginning with his ministry, Luke considers the early life
of Jesus – in all its simplicity – to speak to us of ways of the true God, who enters our world not in pomp and circumstance but in the
modest life of a faithful family. Immanuel (God with us) enters our world to truly identify with our joys and sorrows, hopes and struggles. He comes to live among the people of the land and to share in the obscurity that is common to most people throughout human
history. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church so aptly expresses: “He thought with a human mind, labored with human hands,
and loved with a human heart,” and “All of Christ’s life was a lesson - his words, his silences, his gestures.” In Jesus, God not only
reveals himself to us and we encounter the human face of God, but God also gives himself to us out of love. In Jesus, the true God
who is love, who is in solidarity with our frailty and vulnerability, is revealed and given to us in love. Love takes risks, love puts itself
‘out there’, and it gives itself for the good of the beloved, and holds nothing back. If God had revealed himself in power and glory, we
would have accepted him very easily, for we admire power and glory. But that God has come to us in the vulnerability of a child, this
disarms us and unsettles us, and we realize that we are before a Mystery beyond our control and manipulation; we are before the Mystery of God who is Love. And this divine love, by giving itself in and through a family, affirms the human family and the dignity of
each family. In a world that lacks support for the family and even assails the family through the structures of poverty and oppression;
or morally undermines it, pretending at great social peril that it is an outdated or unnecessary institution; or trivializes it by constantly
redefining it through legislation – more than ever, Christians must commit themselves to the health and welfare of their families and
support struggling families everywhere. No family is without its struggles; yet, if Christians can – with God’s grace and inspired by the
example of the Holy Family – live daily the gospel values in their homes, and support families who are struggling financially, emotionally, and spiritually, we can do more for the future of people, society, and the world than many political or major social ventures can.
Holy Family, be with and intercede for each family and for the whole of the human family, as it desires to thrive and to flourish.
Today’s reading offers significant messages:
• Luke offers us snapshots of Jesus’ family life, and by so doing shows how in Christ God affirms the dignity and value of each family.
• That the Son of God entered our world in the vulnerability of a child of a humble family is a revelation of the true God who is
love, and who gives himself to the human family out of love.
• Everyday Christians receive the grace to live the values of the gospel in their families, and we must commit ourselves to the
wellbeing of struggling families.
For our shared or personal reflection:
After a brief pause for silent reflection share your answers, ideas or feelings.
• How does family life of Jesus, Mary and Joseph inspire me?
• How do I live the vision and values of the Gospel in my family?
• What can I do to support concretely and practically the wellbeing of struggling families?

No Room
Like the Holy Family, billions of our brothers and sisters around the world seek shelter and find there is no
room anywhere. Refugees suffer separation as they
flee persecution. Laborers earning meager wages find
it impossible to afford housing. Here in the United
States tens of thousands have lost homes due to foreclosure or extended periods of unemployment. Millions of undocumented people are mistreated and
abused rather than welcomed as strangers.
The birth of Our Lord brings light to the darkness, and
hope of a new beginning. As we celebrate God’s gift of
our Messiah, may we be mindful that without our help,
the world will remain bleak for many who suffer. May
the joyful season of Christmas remind us that the Holy
Family experienced the difficulties of being refugees
when they fled to Egypt.
As you celebrate Christmas, what can you do to help
people who are fleeing persecution?

WE ARE GOD’S HOLY FAMILY
SOMOS LA SAGRADA FAMILIA DE DIOS
The scriptures of Israel are filled with many stories of barren
couples who were miraculously granted the gift of children by
God. Surely the best known among these is the first reading from
today, from which Luke took inspiration when he recounted the
miraculous birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah and Elizabeth,
and the more miraculous birth of Jesus to Mary and Joseph. In
each instance, we are given examples or role models of those
who trusted in God. More than examples of those who trust, they
are models of self-surrender. They abandoned their own presuppositions and prejudices about the workings of the world and
turned their lives over to belief in a God who can make life grow
where none ought to; a God who can turn death around into a
new and unimagined life; a God who can, today, take a tiny child
of humble parents in an insignificant town and make him into a
light for all the world. This is what we, as God’s holy family, are
called to do each day: to trust not in ourselves and the way we
think things should be, but to open ourselves and surrender ourselves in faith to a God of endless promise.
haya vida en lugares en donde era inconcebible que la hubiera;
infinita.

CHILDREN OF ETERNITY
HIJOS DE LA ETERNIDAD
You are children of eternity. Your immortal crown awaits you, to
reward your duty and love. You may indeed sow here in tears,
but you may be sure there to reap in joy.
